Always serene, never frazzled—Maricar Reyes surely is one of those rare women blessed with effortless grace and peace, the kind that seems unwavering no matter what. When asked in Good Housekeeping’s October 2013 issue for how she manages to maintain an air of calm all the time, she looks surprised and says, “Talaga (Really?)?” before sharing, “You have to be centered on something that’s unshakeable eh. You can’t be dependent [on the world] kasi it’s so magulo (because it's so chaotic.).” Her center, of course, is God, and it’s probably safe to say that it’s because of this center that she managed to get to where she is right now, even after a difficult period in her life a few years ago.
“Wala eh, victims never win,” she states when asked about her attitude toward life’s adversities. “Whenever something negative happens… you just have to go, ‘Okay, this is what went wrong, so how do we fix that?’ You can mourn for a while, but then you’re not gonna solve anything if you stay there…even though it’s sometimes comfortable to stay there.”
Read on for a few more gems of life-changing wisdom from this rising star.
1. FOCUS ON THE GOOD.
“This can be your family or whatever. You have to pick the people [who] can influence you, [and] make sure that these people are not centered on things that can be bad for you.”
2. KEEP LEARNING.
“Always have an attitude of learning. The minute you think you know everything, that’s actually very dangerous [because] then you can’t be taught.”
3. DON’T BLAME OTHERS.
“In every situation, look at kung ano 'yung mali mo before mali ng iba (look at your mistakes first before you look at the mistakes of others.). And then fix that first.”
4. KEEP YOUR EMOTIONS IN CHECK.
“I don’t like being too emotional. Don’t make big decisions when you’re feeling emotional.”
