Kelly Clarkson has revealed she was “blackmailed” into working with “difficult” producer Dr. Luke.
Executives at Sony Music have been embroiled in a legal battle with Kesha for the past few months, with the singer requesting to be released from her contract due to allegedly suffering sexual abuse at the hands of Dr. Luke, who has fiercely denied her allegations.
After a New York judge recently refused Kesha’s motion, the Tik Tok star was showered with support by fans and celebrities alike.
Among them was fellow pop star Kelly, who took to Twitter.com and posted a cryptic message, writing, “trying 2 not say anything since I can’t say anything nice about a person… so this is me not talking about Dr. Luke (sic).”
On Monday, Kelly was asked about her tweet on Australia’s Kyle and Jackie O radio show. While Kelly didn’t comment on Kesha’s case directly, she did admit she hasn’t had the best of times working with Dr. Luke in the past.
“He’s not a good person to me,” Kelly stated. “We’ve clashed. But I can’t really say anything other than that. I wasn’t there (with Kesha). I don’t know what happened specifically in their situation. Obviously I wasn’t in the room. But I can remark on his character.
“Unfortunately when you have that poor of character, like so many artists don’t like you and don’t like working with you, that’s not normal. I get along with everybody I work with. Obviously, he’s a talented dude… He’s just not a good guy.
“I’ve run into a couple of really bad situations, musically. It’s really hard for me because he’ll just lie to people, and it makes the artist look bad. He’s kind of difficult to work with and kind of demeaning. It’s kind of unfortunate.”
Kelly, who is signed with Sony sub-label RCA Records, has worked with Dr. Luke and his frequent producing partner Max Martin on some of her biggest hits, including Since U Been Gone, Behind These Hazel Eyes, and My Life Would Suck Without You.
However, she confesses she got to a point where she didn’t have a choice but to collaborate with him.
“People are like, ‘Oh you’ve worked with Max and Luke ‘ but Max and Luke are very different,” she continued. “I only worked with him because literally, I got blackmailed by my label. They were like, ‘We will not put your album out if you don’t do this.’ It was a really hard time for me. And I tried to make the best of the situation.”
Kelly went on to explain that her decision to continue working with Dr. Luke was greatly influenced by the “whole crew of people that depend on us for their livelihood,” adding she “kind of had to swallow the pill” and work with the controversial producer.
She also made it clear that Kesha’s “situation is completely different from mine” adding, “If it’s true (the sexual abuse allegations), I can’t imagine working with someone who’s done something like that.”
