TV cameras were able to capture the distress that was visible on the face of Jinkee Pacquiao when her husband, Manny Pacquiao, was knocked out by a single blow during the sixth round of his bout with Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8 (December 9 in the Philippines). In a phone interview on Aksyon TV Channel 41’s Balitang 60 show on December 9, Jinkee expressed how worried she was during the few seconds when her husband was unconscious in the ring.

Kasi natakot ako 'nung hindi siya nakabangon agad. Kasi first time kong nakita siyang ganun. Kasi never in my whole life na nakikita ko si Manny na knocked down talaga, na parang as in na medyo napakatagal makabangon. So, natakot talaga ako na kung anong nangyari sa kanya (I got scared when he wasn’t able to stand up immediately. This was my first time to see him like that. Never in my whole life have I seen Manny get knocked down to the point where he couldn’t immediately recover. So, I was really worried that something might have happened to him),” she was quoted as saying in an article on PEP.ph.

She also added that she had asked Manny to retire from boxing while he lay unconscious in the ring. So, hindi niya ini-expect (That was actually what I told Manny while he was down. I said, ‘Bhe, maybe the Lord’s purpose for you is to stop boxing and to focus on Him. Let’s just serve Him. So I told him that, but he didn’t respond. I also don’t want to pressure him for an answer. He’s still a bit confused right now, maybe he wasn’t expecting that he’ll be defeated because he already had the upper hand. He wasn’t expecting it.).”

Jinkee also said that she had already accepted Manny’s shocking defeat, adding that her husband’s health is more important that a win. “E, ganun talaga… pagka ‘yan ang naging propesyon mo, kailangan mo… marunong kang um-accept ng talo. So, hindi naman kailangan laging panalo. Kailangan ka ring tumanggap ng pagkatalo,” she said. “But kami, as long as he’s okay 'yung health niya, 'yun ang pinaka-importante sa amin (It’s really like that… you have to learn how to accept defeat if that’s your profession. You don’t always need to win. You also have to learn how to accept defeat. But the most important thing for us is that his health is okay.)… Thankful kami kay Lord for everything, for helping him. Everything happens for a reason and we honor God.”
