Actress Jennylyn Mercado opens up about her recent breakup with actor Dennis Trillo in an exclusive interview for YES! Magazine’s June 2011 issue. In March 2011, PEP.ph reported that the breakup was caused by “a small and mababaw” fight, which ended in verbal sparring and physical abuse. Jennylyn finally clears up the issue in a 25-page story in YES! by revealing the history behind their relationship and recounting what happened during the fight. Jen tells YES! that she had apprehensions about Dennis when they were just getting to know each other, claiming that she wasn’t very confident about him because his image showed him as a man who changed partners quickly. Their shared love for biking and his persistence in wooing her finally won her over, though, and their similar personalities helped make their relationship last for a year.
Things went downhill the night of March 5, however, when a small disagreement between them escalated to a full-blown verbal fight filled with screams and insults. Jen admits she was scared at the time because she knew about Dennis’s temper, but she instinctively fought back when he began cursing her. “Dinuduro niya ’yong ulo ko. Ginagano’n niya ’yong ulo ko habang minumura-mura niya ko. Siyempre po, hindi naman ako papayag nang gano’n. Kaya nakipagsabayan ako sa kanya (He was pointing at my head, and while he was doing that, he was cursing at me. Of course, I couldn’t let him do that. That's why I had to give as good as I got),” she explains.
After a few more heated exchanges, Dennis’s harsh words finally became the last straw for Jennylyn. “Sa sobrang gulat ko doon sa mga sinabi niya sa 'kin, umakyat talaga 'yong dugo ko sa ulo. Talagang nag-init 'yong ulo ko. Talagang nasampal ko siya (I was really surprised by what he said. The blood just went to my head. I was really angry. I really slapped him),” she admits.
But what Dennis did in return was to put her in a headlock, drag her across the room, throw her down on the floor, and tell her he never wanted to see her again—an incident that was doubly hurtful for Jennylyn, who had had a tonsillectomy just eight days before the fight. Jennylyn admits that after what happened, her self-confidence has suffered. Even so, she’s glad she got to see this side to Dennis. “Tama na siguro ’yong ganito. Kasi, habang maaga, at least nakita ko ’yong totoo, nakita ko ’yong attitude niya (I guess this is all right. At least, while it's still early, I got to see the truth. I saw his real attitude).”
Jen also talks about her experiences in life from her tumultuous childhood to her love problems—including the details of her previous relationship with actor Patrick Garcia, the father of her son, Alex Jazz.
