Veteran star Jaclyn Jose won Best Actress in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for her role as a drug-dealing matriarch in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa.
With a very competitive roster of actresses, Jaclyn’s win came as a surprise to many. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen spoke for the jury regarding their decision in a Vanity feature. “We found her to be a wonderful leading actress, a master of her skills. It was not a supporting character.”
Jaclyn herself did not expect the win. “I don’t know what to say,” she exclaimed during her emotional speech. “I’m so surprised! I just went to have the red carpet walk with my daughter… Thank you to Cannes. Thank you to the jury. Thank you that you liked our film… I would also like to share this recognition to all the Filipinos who are here now. ”
In a Yahoo! report, Jaclyn talked about her role. “The biggest challenge for me was not to act,” she said. “Especially since I am coming from television shows where I play loud and campy characters.
“Ma’ Rosa” is the story of a poor store owner (Jaclyn Jose) and her husband (Julio Diaz) who are trying to make ends meet by selling drugs in a poor Manila community. When they are detained, their children scalp for money to pay off corrupt police officers.
