The first trailer for eagerly anticipated movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", starring Felicity Jones has premiered.

Delighted fans got their first look at the spin-off film set in the Star Wars universe which comes soon after JJ Abrams' successful reboot of the intergalactic saga last year.

The film stars another female protagonist in the lead role, British actress Felicity Jones who is better known for her romantic leading roles.

Set between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, the trailer opens with criminal Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), facing a roll call of charges, including forgery of Imperial documents, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest, and hints at the return of Darth Vader.

Recruited by the rebels, she is tasked with the job of stealing the plans for the Death Star.

Like The Force Awakens' heroine, Rey, Jyn is an orphan who has been on her own from the age of 15.

Riz Ahmed of Three Lions also stars in the film together with Hollywood veterans Mads Mikkelsen and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One is expected to be one of the year’s biggest box office hits after Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke records last year and is well on its way to making over $2 billion (£1.4 billion) worldwide.

Director Gareth Edwards, the creative behind the most recent version of Godzilla, explained to website Flicks and the City in 2015 that the new film centres on a "group of people who don’t have magical powers who band together to bring hope to the galaxy."

And while the film exists within the same world as the Star Wars chapters it is a “self-contained story”. "It’s exciting because we’re not held to anything and we can be a bit more free, more brave,” he added. “And what’s great about everyone at LucasFilm is that they’re encouraging that.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released in the U.K. and U.S. on December 16, 2016.
