Gal Gadot took inspiration from Princess Diana to portray Wonder Woman in the upcoming superhero movie.
The trailer for the feature was revealed to the huge audience at the Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con on Saturday.
An emotional Gal took a moment to compose herself in front of the ecstatic crowd, and later answered questions about the movie alongside co-star Chris Pine and director Patty Jenkins.
Explaining where she had got her inspiration to play the role of Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince, the 31-year-old actress revealed she had watched a documentary on the late Princess Diana before filming began.
"She (Princess Diana) said she leads from her heart and not from her head. And I think the same is true of our Diana," Gal shared.
The Israeli-born star said the movie, due out next year, is a story of a girl becoming a woman.
"Diana grew up in (the isolated island of) Themyscira where she was very safe and very protected," she said.
"She thought she knew everything about the world. When she left Themyscira to go to the world of men, she realises there is so much more that she doesn't understand."
With so many superhero movies from both DC Comics and Marvel leading with a male character, Gal felt now was the time for a female-led superhero movie to be released.
"Many times, it (filming the movie) felt like we got signs from the universe," she explained. "It felt like we were just a vessel for a greater story that we need to share with everyone. It isn't about me as an actress or Patty as a director. It felt like, now is the time."
Director Patty agreed, and echoed Gal's sentiments that now was the time for a woman to be the lead in a superhero movie.
Wonder Woman is slated for release in June, 2017.
