Actress Eugene Domingo, who starred in the commercially and critically successful Philippine independent film Ang Babae sa Septic Tank, was named one of the contenders for the Best Actress Award at the 2012 Asian Film Awards, ABS-CBNNews.com reports. According to PEP.ph, Eugene will also be one of the presentors at the awards ceremony.
Other nominees in the category include India’s Vidya Balan for The Dirty Picture (India), Michelle Chen for You Are the Apple of My Eye (Taiwan), Leila Hatami for Nader and Simin, A Separation (Iran), and Deanie Ip for A Simple Life (Hong Kong).
Two other Filipinos also made the cut. Shamaine Buencamino of the indie film Niño will be competing in the Best Supporting Actress category against actresses Gwei Lun-mei for The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (Hong Kong), Cris Horwang for Headshot (Thailand), Mitsushima Hikari for Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (Japan), and Yan Ni for 11 Flowers (China).
Meanwhile, screenwriter Chris Martinez was nominated for Best Screenplay, also for Ang Babae sa Septic Tank.
The awards ceremony will be held on March 19 in Hong Kong. The Asian Film Awards are presented by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.
