Maja Salvador just celebrated her 10th anniversary in showbiz in May this year, and she proudly wears the veteran grit and tenacity she’s earned from a decade in a demanding industry. “Itong 10 years, masasabi ko na challenging [siya],” she says. “Pero hanggang ngayon, ina-accept ko pa rin ‘yung challenge na ‘yun. ‘Yung determination ko, hindi pa rin mawawala (I can say that these past 10 years have been challenging. But until now, I’m still accepting that challenge. My determination hasn’t been gone yet.).”

Indeed, there’s an admirable self-assurance in this actress today, and she doesn’t hide where she’s been getting it from. “'Pag nasa show business ka talaga, maaga ka magiging mature (When you’re in showbiz, you’ll really mature early),” she says. But good news--you don’t need to spend a decade in showbiz to cop her life lessons. Read on to find out what they are.

1. GO AFTER YOUR GOALS.
Iba 'yung happiness na mararamdaman mo kapag alam mong may na-achieve ka or may na-improve ka sa sarili mo na ginusto mo talaga (The happiness that you’ll feel when you know you have achieved something or you have improved yourself is really different.).”

2. BE PASSIONATE.
Dapat pala sa trabahong ito, mahal mo talaga ‘yung gusto mo. Hindi sapat ‘yung ‘gusto’ lang. Dapat nandoon ‘yung passion sa trabaho (You have to really love what you’re doing in this industry. Liking it isn’t enough. You have to be passionate about your work.).”

3. DON’T DOUBT.
“Last year lang ako naging confident sa acting. Wake-up call 'yung pagkapanalo ko ng Gawad Urian. [Sabi ko,] huwag ka nang mag-doubt sa sarili mo (I only became confident with my acting last year. My Gawad Urian award was a wake-up call. I told myself, don’t doubt yourself again.).”

4. GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME.
’Yun naman ang pinakaimportanteng regalo na puwede mo ibigay sa mga tao sa buhay mo. Hindi mo nabibili 'yung oras (This is the most important gift that you can give to they people in your life. You can’t buy time.).”

5. BE PATIENT.
Hindi ako nagmamadali. Kung kalian ibibigay ni God ‘yung time ko, hihintayin ko. But for now, I am happy. Kuntento ako sa mga nangyayari (I’m not in a hurry. I’ll wait for whenever God decides that it’s my time. But for now, I am happy. I’m content with what’s happening in my life.).”
