Thousands of people gathered at Luneta Park on August 26, National Heroes’ Day, to call for the total abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), more known as the pork barrel fund. Inquirer.net reports that around 80,000 to 100,000 people from all walks of life were estimated by the police to have joined the “Million People March,” which was organized through Facebook and Twitter around two weeks earlier after controversial businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles was reported to have connived with several politicians to embezzle around P10 billion of the funds.

President Benigno Aquino III had vowed to change the system by echoing the call for the abolition of the PDAF days before the rally, but several protesters still remain skeptical.

The march is the biggest demonstration since President Aquino’s election in 2010, with several Filipinos from other areas both in the country and abroad also holding their own rallies in their hometowns. A number of influential local personalities have also expressed their support for the rally by encouraging their followers to join the demonstration.
