cristine_sarah.jpgThe Twitterverse exploded last Sunday when actress Cristine Reyes posted a series of angry tweets on her Twitter all pertaining to someone she referred to as Drama Princess and IDOL. In a report from PEP.ph, among Cristine’s pithy comments were, "Pagmamagaling magsayaw habulin ng mga babaeng sexy... FYI mali ka ng dialogue e baka habulin mo. Ikaw ang naghabol! binreak ka nga e!" and "What a backstabber with a super goody goody image and super sweet smile!”

According to PEP sources, her comments came in the wake of pop princess Sarah Geronimo's offhand remark during rehearsals for ASAP XV. “Pag magaling sumayaw, habulin ng mga babaeng sexy,” she said to John Pratts after Rayver Cruz’s dance number, apparently with the microphone still on. Earlier this year, there were rumors that Sarah and Rayver were dating but both denied it.

As of press time, Sarah has yet to publicly comment on this issue.

While having others insult you behind your back may be juvenile, this behavior is unfortunately not limited to schoolrooms (or the stage). Have you been the victim of backbiting? Before you break out the military gear and launch into battle mode, check out these tips from FN and learn to defend yourself properly against catty remarks.

1.  MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT

You don’t want to make a fuss over something only to realize in the end that you misinterpeted the situation--or took offense at a comment made about someone else. Try to find the root of the problem before reacting; although it might pain you to talk to someone who offended you, getting her side of the story first before passing judgment is better than immediately believing in hearsay. Remember that rumors often get more and more complicated as they spread through word of mouth. It’s better to be armed with the facts before you go on full confrontation mode.

2.    RESIST THE URGE TO FIGHT BACK

Defending yourself is definitely not a bad thing, but there’s no need to use aggressive or spiteful methods to show the world how you feel. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. What you might find justifiable in the throes of anger might lead you to do something you'll later regret. Resorting to vulgarity and public name-calling makes you just as bad as the person you're confronting. Instead of descending to his or her level, why not take this opportunity to show that you are the better person?

3.    MAKE YOUR GRIEVANCES KNOWN

Fighting back doesn’t have to mean being nasty. If you get to the bottom of the issue and you confirm your suspicions, sit down and talk to the person involved. Let her know how hurtful her words and/or actions were. How she responds to your overtures will help you gauge whether or not it’s a good idea to mend bridges. If, after all this, she continues to pick on you, just let it go. Not everyone in this world is going to be your friend, but that doesn’t mean you have to be their enemy.

4.    RELAX

Ask yourself, is getting upset and fighting back really worth your time and energy? Instead of getting caught up in negative feelings, focus on what you can do to make yourself happy. A good round of meditation or reflection might help put things in perspective. If you need it, you can even get a massage or take a relaxing hot bath. Everything will start looking better to you once you’ve had a good rest and time to cool down.

5.    BE FORGIVING

In the end, even if push comes to shove, be the greater person and let things go. If you can’t do it now, keep it in mind for later when your emotions have simmered. Forgiving this person will help you get over the incident and move on with your life. Not everyone in the world is out to get you, after all, and for every person you don't get along with, you will meet a friend whose company you'll want to keep for a long time.
