charice.jpgInternational singing sensation Charice is back in the country to film a TV special for GMA-7. After arriving in Manila on January 30, PEP.ph reports that she held a press conference where she cleared up issues that had sprung up during her last visit. Foremost on the press’s mind was the controversy involving TV-host Ogie Diaz, who posted negative Tweets about her last week. Among them were remarks against Charice’s choice of eyewear as well as her English skills.

“May nakapagsabi nah bah Kay charice na hindi bagay sa kanya ang nerdy glasses??! (Has someone already told Charice that nerdy glasses don’t become her?) She always wears it but it's looks so ugly on her,” he posted in a Tweet. “Isa lang ang masasabi ko: iba pa rin ang karisma ni @MsLeaSalonga sa mga Pinoy (There’s only one thing I can say: Lea Salonga’s charisma with Filipino fans is still different),” he added. “Very fluent pa sa Tagalog, lalo na sa English.”

Angered by Ogie’s Tweets, some Chasters, as Charice’s fans call themselves, began to bash Diaz via Twitter; calling him “cheap” and “plastic.” The arguments got so heated that @ogiediaz appeared briefly on US Twitter Trending, which means the topic was so popular people worldwide were talking about it. After airing his side on radio station DZWIS, Ogie apologized to Charice and her fans. “Ako po ay humihingi ng paumanhin sa mga Chasters... kung sila man ay na-offend sa aking mga opinion (I am asking Chasters to forgive me if I offended them with my opinions),” he is quoted as saying on PEP.ph. “Kung na-offend ko man si Charice Pempengco, ay ako din, e, humihingi ng sorry sa kanya. (If I offended Charice Pempengco, I’m also saying sorry to her.)”

At the press conference, Charice said she has already forgiven Ogie. “Ang tao kasi may sariling opinion... Hindi ko naman siya pipigilan na mag-comment. Nag-sorry na naman siya, okay na po sa akin yun. Wala naman pong problema. (People are entitled to their own opinions. I’m not stopping him from making comments. He already apologized, so that’s fine with me. There’s really no problem.)”

As for the Chasters who insulted Ogie on Twitter, Charice had this to say: “For me, hindi rin maiiwasan ang ibang fans na magbigay ng masasakit na salita. Kasi kahit na sabihan ko silang, 'Tigilan niyo 'yan,' hindi rin maiiwasan kasi yung ibang tao hindi ko rin naman mapipigilan. Sa lahat naman ng fans ko, ang tunay na Chaster, hindi magsasabi ng masasakit na salita. (For me, hurtful words from some fans are unavoidable. Even if I say, ‘Stop this,’ I won’t be able to stop all of them. To all my fans, a real Chaster won’t say hurtful words.)”

Like Charice, have you had to deal with criticism that's more personal than professional? Are you feeling down because of negative comments made about you or your work? Keep your chin up and learn how to let the negativity roll off your back with these tips from FN.

1. ASK YOURSELF IF THE CRITICISM IS VALID.

Before you get hurt or take your detractors’ words to heart, ask yourself whether there is any truth to what they’re saying first. If there is, then the best thing to do is to work on a way to fix it. There’s a difference between giving constructive criticism and hurling insults, though. If you realize that people are being unnecessarily hurtful, don’t let their comments affect you. Only take in what will help you in the future. If all their comments do is make you feel bad about yourself, then there’s no use in listening to them.

2. DON'T DWELL.

Learn to let go. If their comments end up depressing you, you'll start messing up. You might even end up validating what they’re saying about you! So the next time they bash you, just turn a deaf ear to what they’re saying. If you have to listen, do so, but file the comments away and forget about them. Instead of dwelling and wondering about what else you could be doing wrong, focus on what you're doing right and what you can do to improve yourself.

3. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF.

By this, we don't mean you should have a shouting match with your detractors. If you know what they’re saying about you is wrong, let them know. Back up your arguments with facts so you can make a convincing statement. Make sure you avoid being confrontational when you make your case. Just because your detractors are intent on bringing you down, it doesn’t mean you have to retaliate in the same manner. Approach the situation calmly and present the facts in a positive manner.

4. TALK TO THEM.

If, after all your efforts, they still continue to bash you, consider confronting them and letting them know how you feel. Detractors aren’t necessarily your enemies. They may come in the form of friends or family who don't even realize that what they're doing is lowering your self-esteem. Be honest. Chances are, once they understand the situation, they’ll start being more positive and stop piling on the negativity.

5. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

At the end of the day, your detractors can only do damage to you if you let them. Remember that everyone has to deal with them at some point in life—and you’ll find that the more you achieve, the more you’ll be under other people’s scrutiny. The only way to deal and grow as a person is to learn from experience. Work on building your self-esteem by learning to value yourself. Give yourself compliments for a job well done and congratulate yourself when you know you’re doing great. It’s not being self-absorbed if it makes you feel good about yourself and helps you become a better person.
