Actress Maja Salvador might have a petite figure, but this doesn’t mean she’s not a strong woman. This Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin star is one determined woman, and she’s not going to stop until she's achieved all her goals. “Kapag natupad ko ang isang pangarap, hindi ako tumitigil. Gagawa ako ng bagong pangarap (When I reach one dream, I won’t stop. I’ll make more dreams),” she tells Women’s Health in their May 2011 issue. For now, Maja is busy fulfilling her dreams as an actress. “Hindi ko nakikita yung sarili ko na tumigil kasi sobrang in-love ako sa trabaho (I don't see myself stopping because I'm really in love with my work)!”
What important life lessons has Maja learned from having a career in showbiz? Read on to find out.
1. HOLD FAMILY CLOSE.
Maja recounts how she saw a lot of her fellow actors start spending less and less time with their families after getting famous. For her, however, family is the most important thing because she knows she can always depend on them and vice versa. “Ako napatunayan ko na kahit malaking artist ka na, kahit sino ka pa, alam mo na hahanap-hanapin mo pa rin ‘yung pamilya mo (I’ve discovered that no matter how big an artist you become, no matter who you are, you’ll always look for your family),” she says.
2. LOVE WHAT YOU DO, AND RELISH EVERY MOMENT.
Having been in showbiz for eight years, Maja knows the importance of always bringing something new to the table. This is why she just enjoys her work and pours her soul into everything she does. “Kung gusto mo ‘yung ginawa mo, lahat talaga ibibigay mo. Mahalin mo ‘yung trabaho mo. Kasi kapag minahal mo siya, maraming pagmamahal ang ibabalik sa’yo. (If you like what you’re doing, you should really give your all. Love your job. If you love your job, you’ll receive lots of love in return.)”
3. DON’T BE AFRAID TO DREAM BIG.
Maja is both a go-getter and a dreamer. Instead of letting herself get discouraged by thinking about what could go wrong, she maintains a positive attitude in everything she does. “Dream bigger. Go lang ng go.” Maja says even if you fall, it doesn’t matter. “Hindi mo kailangan madapa ng matagal. Kailangan bumangon lalo na kung may pinag-aalayan ka. (You don’t need to fall for a long time. You have to get up especially if you’re doing your work for someone important.)”
4. CHANNEL YOUR STRESS.
Living in a stressful world like showbiz is tough, but Maja finds ways to channel her worries into things that can help her—like keeping fit! For example, Maja started boxing to toughen herself up for her role in Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin. Now she’s doing it because she loves it—with an added bonus: “Feeling ko kapag nagbo-boxing ako, nare-release ko kung ano man yung mga nararamdaman ko, mga problema (I feel like when I’m boxing, I get to release my feelings and problems).”
5. NEVER GIVE UP.
Maja shares a lesson she learned from champion runner Elma Muros, who trained her for 10 days for her role in the movie Thelma. She thinks this advice can be applied, not just on the track, but in real life. “Di ba tayo, kapag napapagod mabilis tayong magsabi ng, ‘Sige na, ayoko na.’ Hindi. Dapat control mo ‘yun. Kasi nasa isip mo lang ‘yun. Kapag napapagod ka na, isipin mo na: ‘Kaya ko pa ‘to.’ (When we’re tired, it doesn’t take much to make us say, ‘All right, I don’t want to do this anymore.’ You should control this because it’s all in the mind. If you’re tired, just think: ‘I can still do it.’)”
