It was way back during the late 90's when Mai and Epa first met at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where they shared some classes together. Epa admits that he already had a big crush on Mai then, but it took an impressive class recitation for Epa to get Mai's attention. Through a common friend, Epa was then able to get hold of Mai's number, and eventually mustered the courage to ask her out on a date. "On that first date, I [felt] that the connection was palpable straight away. [I knew] that he was the one and [that we] were meant to be," shares Mai.
With the two's connection, it was no surprise that Epa swept Mai off her feet with a romantic proposal. Mai was already based in New Zealand, but when she went home to the Philippines for a vacation, she and Epa then decided to go to Singapore together. As they were eating at Shots Cafe in Anne Siang Hill, Mai was surprised to hear a Filipino song in the background. After making a remark about the song, a waiter then approached her and gave her a fortune cookie. When Mai cracked it open, she then found the question ‘Will you marry me?' written on a slip of paper. "At the exact time, Epa pulled out a little box, [wentdown] on one knee, and asked [me] to marry him. [After] bursting into tears and laughter, I said yes of course!" Mai recalls.
Mai and Epa celebrated their big day with an opulent theme inspired by the Regency and Victorian Era, and Marie Antoinette. The couple filled their wedding with lush and dreamy details, and also asked their guests to don elegant ensembles with bold embellishments.
Despite opting for luxurious wedding details, Mai and Epa didn't forget to incorporate personal touches into their wedding. The couple engaged themselves in DIY projects, which included the table numbers, souvenirs, and hat props for the groomsmen that gave more character to their affair.
With the rich theme the couple prepared for their big day, the couple learned that it's important to discuss your expectations for the wedding with your partner. This, according to Mai, will make allow your ideas to reflect in your wedding. "Glitches may be unavoidable during the day itself, but if you plan ahead up to the last detail it can be prevented. But whatever happens just have fun and enjoy the moment," Mai adds.
