To ensure a thorough and splendid coverage of an event, one must have a superb team who works in sync with each other. A great documentary team should include individuals who share the same vision for their opus, working with each other seamlessly, and aspiring hard to see that goal come to fruition. DB Phos Wedding Films and Photography, a vibrant and young team of photographers and videographers, is all these--and then some. As the group features eclectic styles and disciplines, their communal interest in wedding photography propels them to share in the team spirit, a trait they consider their most valuable resource. As a company comprised of artists trained in various fields, their advantage over singular photographers is the multi-perspective approach to their body of work.
DB Phos started out of passion and pure love of photography. The company was launched in 2006 as the brainchild of photography hobbyists Mark Bernal, Ryan Acosta, John Palafox and Chep Unson. Since then, DB Phos' ranks have swollen to forty shooters who are currently covering up to 250 to 300 weddings per year. "We are one big happy family," Mark Bernal shares. "There are no freelance shooters; everybody is an owner." This set-up, Mark and his co-founders believes, is the reason why their roster of artists take good care of their clients. Being an essential element of the company enables each member to do their best work, striving for a standard that would speak best about the company itself. "[Our clients] have to be proud that they got us to cover their wedding. Every member of DB Phos believes and practices this philosophy," Mark continues.
Since its inception, the company has formulated an art of covering weddings that is personal, emotional and unobtrusive. While the group's diversity make it challenging to pinpoint a specific aesthetic, there is a discipline that they have agreed on. "The subjects of our photography are our clients--[they're] the center of our work, the stars of the day. This is why we don't cut their faces or heads, which others think is artistic," Mark says.
Tirelessly striving to please their clients, DB Phos conducts numerous seminars exclusive to their members. The workshops are usually hosted by the owners and at times, external lecturers. "We do hire outside help to bring new skills and knowledge to our team," Mark relays. As to the future, Mark reveals a plan for an expansion of coverage in other parts of the country by hiring photographers, videographers and editors from all over the Philippines.
For the artists of DB Phos Wedding Films and Photography, every wedding film and photo is an art--unique, bursting with energy, touching and sweet. The result, they think, must be a deviation from the one-dimensional wedding coverage. As the team believes, "More than snapshots, you get a treasured keepsake. More than coverage, you get fine art film and photography."
