living with super negative parents
« on: February 23, 2018, 08:29:19 pm »
I was wondering if anyone is still living with their super negative (yes, may word na super talaga) parents. Questions for you:

1. How did you confirm your suspicions na super negative talaga sila?
2. What activities are you doing to get through your everyday life as you still live with them?
3. What are you doing to get out of the situation? Or you have no plans in getting out of the situation?

I am living with my super negative parents kasi. I watched more than 10 youtube videos and read several articles online to confirm my suspicions if negative talaga sila or baka I'm sensitive lang and close minded to changes. Strong suspicions naman ako na negative sila, but I still want to learn from you guys in what ways did you confirm. So better safe na I ask others' opinions din.

So far, I listen to motivational videos and audio to help me get pumped up everyday. I also read books that focuses on my self growth and willing to live, ito kasi yun 2 na nawala sa akin as a result of letting my negative parents affect my life. I'm starting to set aside budget to buy a studio type condo and move out.

What do you mean by super negative parents? Are they always putting you down? Emotionally abusive?

Or are the negativity not directed at you?

Baka they?re stressed out, or empty ang love tank. Why not try showing them a bit more love, TLC, affection, appreciation, etc? (Kahit mahirap gawin) Lol. Pero sabagay i guess it doesn?t matter. The fact that you cannot tolerate it anymore is reason enough for you to move out.

@iluvescadasport ganyan din mom ko. when my dad was alive ok naman siya naging super sungit, bossy, negative, controlling and toxic nung wala na dad ko. i didn't want to leave kaya lang
pati son ko affected na. she always criticizes my son and how i'm raising him. hindi na healthy for us to stay there.

since i have money saved up i bought a townhouse for me and my son. preselling siya so monthly nag huhulog ako for downpayment my mom didn't know about it. i only told her nung na turnover na. i brought her there nung na furnish ko na yung place. she was so sad kasi aalis na kame ng apo niya. only grandchild ang son ko so she is very possessive of him. what i did was pa unti-unti like 3x a week we stay at the new house and then 4x a week sa kanya kame. until she got used to us not being around. she is still negative and toxic to this day but the difference is i have a choice. i can visit her pag na fe-feel ko na nagiging annoying na siya i'll leave na.

moving out is the only way but i suggest you rent first just to see how it feels to live in that area and kung kaya mo na ba talaga. buying a property is a big commitment so you have to be financially ready and dapat gusto mo yung neighborhood mo.

Panong negative ba sis? If negative in a way na hindi mo magawa ang gusto mo while under their roof eh kasi its their house,  so their rules.

When I was single, medyo feeling ko ganun din parents ko. But I Guess you won?t know it until you are a parent yourself. Masasabi ko sa parents ko ganun sila kasi they?re always the devils advocate para careful kami sa mga decisions namin.

Naintindihan ko lang ito if I look at things from their point of view. Especially my dad na laki talaga sa Hirap. So Pag umuwi ako nang May mga pinamili, masaya ako Coz I spent the day shopping. Then my dad would say nagtatapon ng pera. Though he doesn?t ask money from me, he provides parin kasi some of my needs like lodging and groceries (since I?m staying with them). Then the car I use is theirs.

Minsan we are dining out naman. My mom would comment, di masarap. So puede ko sabihin negative. But then looking from her point of view, she just likes to comment with no harm intended.

Siguro If you try understanding things from their perspective, baka mas maintindihan mo sila.

Ito background nila: Maybe those contributed sa pagiging negative nila.
My mom - immigrant from Hong kong. 16 years old nandito na siya tapos 18 yrs ata kinasal via matchmaker. High school graduate.

My dad- Born here but with Chinese blood. NEver finished elementary pero napagtapos niya kaming 3 anak sa "prestigious" school.

Both of them laki sa hirap and naging "successful" financially naman. I have a brother na cerebral palsy, so challenging talaga. We have no caretaker for him.

Negative sila in a way na they only see the bad stuff around them instead of seeing the good things. Examples:

1. Whenever my mom wants to enjoy her time (watching tv, shopping, travelling), she would always use my brother as an excuse for not being able to do it. She would say she has to take care of him, etc. There are instances na when she's watching tv while eating, tapos nahulog sa floor yun food, sasabihin niya "Ano ba yan, if only i shouldn't take care of <insert name of my brother>, I could've eaten sa dining table properly."

2. She would always see the bad stuff happening in our condo namely ants, insects, our neighbors smoking, the improper parking of tenants' cars. We used to live on the same building as our store before (yun tipong ground floor store tapos sa taas yun bahay namin) when she said gusto niya lumipat ng condo kasi masconvenient (meron elevator which is convenient for her and my dad since magsenior na sila. tapos brother ko nakawheelchair so we don't have to carry him sa stairs).

3. I love certain filipino food and mga beach sa province natin. Before, when I was still in good speaking term with her, I would enjoy sharing na I love adobo, tocino, or Bohol. Tapos I'll explain yun resort sa Bohol na maganda pool, masarap filipino breakfast. She would always react "Ay, bakit Pinoy? Bakit ayaw mo mag Europe?" Para bang, she has a negative outlook towards FIlipino and anything Filipino related.

4. My dad, passive negative yan. He won't do the needed tasks kasi (feel ko lang) he doesn't believe in himself kasi hindi siya elementary graduate. Excuse niya is gabi natatapos. Pero yun time na natatapos, gising pa rin naman siya sa bahay, naglalaro ng ipad or watch tv. Feel ko it's his insecurity of talking to other people (kasi diba pag parties hindi maiiwasan makipagmingle with people) kasi mababa education. We have talked to him sincerely naman na he can take classes, ang daming mga night classes that adults can take, kahit pang elementary lessons pa.

I have so many more examples, pero hanggang dyan na lang. The more I give, parang lumalabas ulit yun inis ko and naiiyak nanaman ako.

Lord knows I tried my best to be patient with them, especially with my mom. Pati vacation where I should be relaxing from stress, kasama ko pa rin siya acting as a sponge to her negativity. I even fight her fights kahit mali siya (which is totally against my values, ngayon ko lang narealize yan). Sa dad ko, I did my best to do stuff for him (simple luto ng egg pag morning, putting his cellphone sa bags kapag pauwi na, buying the stuff he needs pag aalis ako. KAso puro may negative comments. I don't need to be praised, but a simple acknowledgement ok na, or at least no comment pwede rin). Lagi niyang pinapalabas na single ako and living under their roof kaya wala pa ako masyadong alam. Nagagawa ko naman mga gusto ko (basta hindi illegal haha) pero whenever they know about it, laging may negative comment. My mom would compare me to other more "successful" people that she knows, and my dad will always say it won't work sa panahon ngayon because of economy or whatever maisip niya.

When I had enough, I terminated my fb account. NAg twitter naman ako. Pero ayun, same sakit parin. Yun mga comments ng strangers, pinapatulan ko.

Alam ko I shouldn't have problem with that, kasi minsan tayo ganun din naman. Pero since 32 years ko na sila kasama, I live with them, I work sa family business na sila pa rin kasama, tapos vacation ko before (except for these past 2 years where medyo nagigising na ako sa katotohanan) lagi with my mom pa, para lagi ako bombarded with their negativity. My sisters and I provided doable financially-friendly solutions, pero ayaw naman nila.Last year, meron major nangyari and that was the moment I said to myself "I've had enough".

I tried to see it from their POV din, pero feel ko it's not right that they can just put me down or verbally abuse me just because they are married (which they see as authority over the single people) and just because they have more money than me.

Pero yun nga, I just want to make sure na valid feelings ko but I don't want to make matters worst by confronting them na. I have made several steps and goals to move on and help my self growth, pero parang I want assurance na tama yun pagidentify ko sa problem (which is yun pagiging negative ng parents ko). Kasi mahirap na if yun solution ko is mali pala kasi mali yun pagidentify ko ng problem.

I want to go to a psychologist, naisip ko baka she can help me identify the real problem. Kaso mahal charge nila haha

Did your mom ever get the chance to have her own ?me? time? I think burned out na sya.
May katulong ba sya mag-asikaso sa kapatid mo? Mga kasambahay for household chores?

About your dad, maybe he?s an introvert.

Maybe they just need a bit more TLC, appreciation.

Appreciate the fact your mom has been taking care of your brother...her negative comments are probably ways for her to show you nahihirapan sya pero ginagawa nya pa rin. You should have hugged her that time and said thank you, buti na lang andyan sya.

The fact na kahit ganun natapos ng father mo but napagtapos kayong 3 sa prestigious schools is also highly commendable. A simple ?Dad/Pa thank you, we?re so proud of you napagtapos mo kami...blah blah?

Sabi nga you can?t give something you don?t have.
Pero i know you can do it kasi i can tell you love and care for your parents. The fact that you?re trying to find ways to understand them says a lot (watching yt vids, etc)

Maybe at the end of the day say it casually lang,?Mom/Ma, nasabi ko na ba thank you sa....? and ?Dad/Pa, thank you for...?  or ?hindi ko pa siguro nasabi dati, pero i really appreciate...(think of 1thing)?  sabay yakap saglit.

Try mo gawin once a day to find something positive about them and say it to them sincerely, konteng lambing.

Maybe mahirap yan gawin growing up in a negative environment, but please try.
Makakatulong yan sa kanila, and much more sayo.
I can tell naman you love and care for your parents but their attitude is getting on your nerves na. So i know you can do it. Love always prevails. (Naks)

Of course, it is still better you move out if you feel it?s for the best.

But in the meantime while you?re still living with them, try to add thank you sa... or naappreciate ko... salamat sa... in your everyday interaction with them. And pointing out something good about what they did. And a quick hug and kiss.
And before sleeping give yourself a pat on your shoulder for doing a good job. 😊 and pray for your parents.

Good luck sis! Hugs ❤️

swtgrl_bee thanks sis! I finally decided to go to one. Research muna na okay na psychologist. Naisip ko din, it's an investment in myself, which is the most important talaga.

kaythrielle
Yes, she has the chance naman. There are so many times na kami na nagsasabi na magmall siya, or magabroad kahit 4days. We(me and my sisters) even volunteered to find a cell group for her para she'll have friends to hang out with. Yun mall and abroad nagagawa naman niya, but she made a big deal out of it. Pinapalabas na napipilitan siya mag me time. Cell group ayaw niya kasi wala siyang time to make up pa daw. Feel din namin very burned out na siya, but she doesn't make effort to relax and enjoy. We aren't forcing her to do everything. Kami kami din tumutulong sa brother namin. Yun 3 years sa life ko totally no social life ako kasi everyday after work, derecho bahay para tulungan sila sa brother ko and house chores. Ako yun naburn out talaga haha Meron stay out maid for household chores, pero hindi nakakarelax mom ko kasi very controlling siya (yes, many issue mother ko haha) Even yun sinamahan na siya magcruise ng ate ko for 10days, hindi niya naenjoy kasi nagwoworry daw sa bahay. Conclusion talaga namin is it's her. No matter what we do, she plays the life's victim card.

But that's not the main reason why he doesn't attend. Nasabi kasi niya sa amin dati na he doesn't like to go sa mga ganun kasi mga "big people" daw umaattend sa mga parties. Big people like people with big businesses, mga nagiimport ng products etc. He has this thinking na since ito ang status namin sa buhay, we shouldn't mingle with those "higher" than us, which is totally wrong.

TLC and appreciation binibigyan talaga namin dati, pero there's only so much we can do. We can't revolve our time 24/7 just around them, we have our own life and dreams din naman.

Thanks sa mga suggestions mo na say thank you and hug them. I'll try it but I'm not expecting. But miracles do happen. Very good point doon sa sinabi mo na "Para kahit na umalis ka na sa poder nila, wala na yung resentment mo towards them". Mahirap din na pagumalis ako tapos may sama na loob ako towards them, ako lang mahihirapan.

My mom, siya na siguro ang pinaka as in pinaka negative na mother sa buong mundo. And I am not exagerating.

Lahat na yata kaaway niya. Mapakapatid, asawa, anak, magulang, at kapitbahay lagi may nasasabing pangit. As in bihira akong nakarinig sa kanya ng puri para sa ibang tao. Feeling niya lahat daw sila sinisiraan siya at eto pa kinakaingitan daw siya.

As in, ang selan selan niya.

^same category sila ng mom ko. my friend's mom ganyan din. fortunately for her, may escape siya so hindi siya stuck sa negativity ng mom niya and she is the breadwinner of their family (siya na lang and mama niya together sa house).

after reading your post, feel ko parang bring back the past. sobrang similar experiences natin, feel ko we can even compare note haha

Tama na tikom bibig and deaf ears. We have to prioritize ourselves din. it's our sanity that is on the line also.

Yun experience ko with them, talagang hit rock bottom ako. twice i thought of killing myself pero i guess the universe knows na deep down I want to live tlaga. Nung nasabi ko ito sa dad ko (nagkaincident between us kasi), ang sinabi niya I should be patient and that madami pa ako hindi alam kasi single ako. doon talaga napamura ako mentally. on the bright side, a big burden was lifted off me. i don't have to be like them nor do I want to be like them. I decided to commit myself in growing and improving on my mental state.

tama na nakaka-affect sa building of  relationships natin. we always have this tiny voice that ill doubt if sincere ba relationship ng isang tao sa atin or hindi.

"In fact dito sa Pinas, kulang na lang itrato kang kriminal kapag tinakwil mo ang magulang mo" <--- agree ako. before, hindi ko magets bakit naiisip yan ng mga tao. ngayon, after experiencing it, na-gets ko na. mahirap na tayo as anak willing naman madadjust for them but sila stuck sa old ways nila. we are human beings with brains din, we are meant to live our life, and not be obliged to take care and listen to their negativity of our parents until we die.

have you thought of leaving home? or meron ka naman "escape" kaya masnahahandle ko naman?

^I am currently working in the city asa province sila. Pero emotionally, yung ugali niya tortured me for a long time. May paranoid tendencies din ako when it comes to dealing with people. I tend to place others opinion beneath mine and would rather please them than be happy myself because I don?t want any confrontation or issues to arise. Just like when I was a child, I just let everything in and suck it up. That is what is like to grow up with nega parents. You will be screwed up.

Si Daddy ko is emotionally distant from us. The kind of dad who ok na sa kanya basta may maiabot lang na pera to us. And yung ugali niya was a source of embarrassment for us na magkakapatid even when we were little. Pag magpadrive ako kunwari papuntang isang hospital eh wala Dr ko dun and would ask my Dad to visit yung isang clinic niya, ayaw ng Dad ko dahil tinatamad.

Yes, you are right. Hindi ko hahayaan na maging ganito ako kagaya nila esp when I will have children on my own. No way talaga.

I for one andaming masasabi against my folks lalo na when I was younger, kung di ko lang talaga sila mahal, haha! But I guess it's really healthy mag move out. That's when my relationship with my parents improved. Nagkaka-miss-an na kasi eh haha! Also, when we mature and understand how things work, that's the time na talaga to move out and explore, there must be only 1 Queen and 1 King sa household, magkaclash talaga since we are our own persons na, and sila well, stick na nga sa old ways nila. For whatever reason, talagang mga iritable na parents natin, baka pagod na or menopause, sickness, or di sila happy, kulang nga ang love tank at kung ano pa man. We aren't, at least for now, so better to create our own world ng malayo sakanila, dumalaw dalaw nalang. Absence makes the heart grow funder ika nga.  Or exert pa ng effort to give them TLC. I date ganyan, bigyan money or gift, maski pa afford nila naman.

the only thing you can really do at this point is move out. your parents are never going to change. it's just unrealistic to hope for that. but what you can do is remove yourself from what you consider to be a toxic environment. parents are really hard to live with, even the not-so-negative ones. that's just  how it is to be an adult.

@iluvescadasport - I sense you are frustrated with all your stories and as you share them, it's like it's hurting and affecting you again  :( It also seems based on your stories that you feel you're somehow showing signs of negativity yourself.  :( I guess it's tough being in your shoes. I had my share of negativities from my parents too. One instance I'd never forget was when I was younger, they would always say na lampa ako, na hindi ako pwede sa physical activities. It stuck to me so badly that when I was in college, I struggled with PE - table tennis! Haha. My dad picked me up and I was CRYING saying na magddrop na ako. ("good" student kasi ako noon, so big deal ito sa akin). And I told him that yeah siguro nga lampa ako. Siguro that moment, he realized the consequences of his words and actions. Ayun, sabi nya "hindi kaya mo yan! wag ka magdrop" and he took me on weekends to practice table tennis. Parang mababaw noh, but it really did affect my self-image and confidence.

Anyway, enough about me. As what another sis said, it's good that you are acknowledging where you are right now and what you feel. That's a good first step. If I may suggest, sabi nga sa 7 Habits, focus on your Circle of Influence. It's hard kasi to try to "fix" others or analyze why they do this and that. What we can "fix" is ourselves and our perspective. Well, hindi naman talaga "fix" kasi naniniwala ako (based na rin sa coaching practice ko) that nobody is broken, and we acknowledge people as whole. :)

From your stories, parang hindi naman kelangan ng psychologist sis. These are real and valid issues that many people go through. Kelangan lang ng guidance, sounding board and support.

Parang mababaw noh, but it really did affect my self-image and confidence." <--------- Napaiyak talaga ako dito, pero pinigil ko kasi nasa office ako that time, baka magtaka dad ko bakit ako umiiyak. Nainggit and na-touch ako [textspeak!] ginawa ng dad ko. That time, I wished I had that similar moment where my parents just supported me. But it made me realized din na iba yun way of pagpalaki sa kanila ng own parents nila, so I can't compare din.
And hindi mababaw yan experience mo, gaya ng sinabi mo, it's valid. I believe na yun mga tingin natin na mababaw, sila pa yun masnagtrigger sa mga "negative" issues natin (.e.g low self-esteem, lack of confidence, etc) kasi binabali-wala lang natin kasi yun nga, mababaw for us. But those little experiences build up and nagcacause ng big bad effect on us.

Na-mention ko kasi I want to go to a psycologist to confirm if valid feelings and analysis ko sa problems ko. Sabi niya,"as long as you feel it, it's real. The question is, what will you do about it." Lahat naman ng tao meron feelings, and feelings are subjective. What is something important for me may be not impt for you and vice versa. Ang important is your next step daw. Kung alam mo it's something "negative", will you stuck yourself in self-pity? Or get up and do something about it?
Sa kanya ko na-realize na me doubting my feelings is the effect of how my parents treated me ever since I was a child. They tell me what to feel and how to feel. If I have my own sincere feelings na hindi tugma sa culture nila, they will tell me it's wrong. I guess na-stuck yan sa akin while I was growing up. But now, I know better. My feelings are valid. I just have to make sure that I do something about it. Hindi pwede self-pity. No room for growth kapag self pity.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you deal with your self image and confidence? When mo narealize na it's really affecting you as a person na?

^ actually about the ?lampa? thing, i only realized it later in life. When i started working at may pera na ako, i enrolled in boxing. Again, i received the same remarks. But since pera ko na yun and i do it on my own naman, hindi ko na pinansin. Lalo ko pinakita na pinanindigan ko boxing. So kahit na ang aga ko gumising at may sugar na knuckles ko go pa rin :)

True yan, iba iba talaga tayo. Kaya sometimes when we ask for advice or when we get advice, we always need to weigh it out. Baka mamaya that advice doesnt work for us, no matter how similar the experience seems to be. :)  I guess it?s quite toxic to live with the stress - both in your personal life and even your work life.
