Is LOVE enough to stay in the Marriage?
« on: October 05, 2014, 04:58:06 am »
I would like to know all the Wives here kung sapat ba ang pagmamahal para tanggapin ang mga bagay bagay na dahilan ng madalas nyong di pagkakaunawaan.

How do you deal being fully dependent financially sa husband nyo? May allowance ba kayo?

I would like to know. Kasi diko alam ang ano tama as a wife. Housewife ako decided by both dahil yun ang request ni husband na better for me to stay at home para mas makapag  concentrate kami together at mag ka baby. I agree pero at least he could support my needs kasi isipin nya mahirap sitwasyon ko without working walang stable income. He agree pero lahat yun napako. No allowance, no money,  basta kumakain ako. If ever he buy my things at the end susumbatan ka sa binili nya sa akin. Sabi nya i should be thankful kasi pera naman daw nya yun at diko pera. Hubby is retired na. Early retirement. So he recieved his monthly pension at malaki ang natatanggap nya at sobra sobra sa aming dalawa. Wala pa kaming baby.

Diko lang ma gets ang masyado nyang paghihigpit sa pera when in fact laki ng pension nya. We have bills to pay pero sobra pa ang natitira after mabayaran lahat.

Nakakapagod makipagtalo everyday. He always said love na love daw nya ako at di nya kayang mabuhay kung mawala ako. He is not consistent sa words nya!

I Love him with all my heart. Pero minsan parang gusto ko ng sumuko. I feel unloved. I dunno if Love is enough for me to stay. Di na ako masaya. Please enlighten me mga sis.

Hi Macblush,

I am a stay-at-home mom, and it's both our decision na mag-hands on ako with our 3 year-old daughter. But my daughter and I are very well provided, even my masters in Ateneo, he pays for it. Though I financially depend on my husband, I have freedom and voice in our business, finances, marriage and family. We're still equal partners in everything, ganun naman ang recommended.

But I guess, it depends on the character of the person you married. With how you narrate your story, parang for me, hindi makatarungan.

Some of the things about your husband that you mentioned which I find bothering:

Quote from: macblush

If ever he buy my things at the end susumbatan ka sa binili nya sa akin.

Nakakapagod makipagtalo everyday.

He always said love na love daw nya ako at di nya kayang mabuhay kung mawala ako. He is not consistent sa words nya!

I don't know if this is just a character flaw or may deeper issue. But you may want to check this emotional abuse questionnaire developed by Waltz, Rushe & Gottman just for you to find out if there is a deeper issue. (http://quantumchanges.com/couples_basic_quesionnaires/017%20Emotional%20Abuse%20Questionnaire.pdf). In the questionnaire, you will find the four sub-scales of emotional abuse: isolation subscale, degradation subscale, sexual coercion, and property damage sub-scale.

If this is the character of the person you married, I think it is better for you to be financially independent, kung finances pala ang sukatan kung may boses ka o wala. I find it difficult to entrust one's emotional, physical, financial well-being to people who are madamot, callous, and manipulative.

With your question if LOVE is enough, well for the normal marriage, LOVE for me is not a feeling or emotion, but it is a DECISION to love someone despite his/her imperfections, shortcomings, and weaknesses. But not to the point that you compromise your emotional and psychological well-being. If your marriage damages your self-esteem and self-worth as a person, then the LOVE he professes is like a manipulation so you will stay, and the LOVE that you feel is like an excessive emotional or psychological reliance on him.

I'm just basing my reply on my impression of your post and on my limited knowledge.

Let's  see if I can wade through your issues and concerns.

BUT 1st:   if wala ka source of income or pera maliban sa iabot ni Mr. Kripz --  where will you get money for your food, shelter & clothing? Timing is important.  Whatever you decide on, isipin mo muna pano mo i-set-up how  you will have money for  at least your basic needs.
Divorce  or Annulment  will give you a share of his properties and funds.  Yung layasan mo sya eh makuha  mo lang hopia or what you can swipe --  not enough. You really must have a source of income.

I would like to know all the Wives here kung sapat ba ang pagmamahal para tanggapin ang mga bagay bagay na dahilan ng madalas nyong di pagkakaunawaan.

No marriage is perfect, no spouse  blameless.
90% of the time! puede pag usapan ang mga hindi pinagkakaunawaan.

Maybe he is just being practical about how much you need:  kasi, housewife ka now -- pricey and extra clothes sa tingin nya may be impractical expenses. But for you, como may hangover ka pa sa career life mo, when you had more -  having less accoutrements now means kadamutan  sa yo.
Food - he may be wanting to make you eat healthy.  Puede.
Yung statement:  pera ko... Maybe that is a closing statement to a batbatan between you 2 over a dress too pricey or stylishly inappropriate for your life now.

So, you ask if love is enough to make you accept the issues of conflict between you 2?
No, you must add Understanding/Empathy, Maturity, Patience & Hope.
After all, Marriage is not for little girls, it's for Big Girls wearing Big Girl panties.

I Love him with all my heart. Pero minsan parang gusto ko ng sumuko. I feel unloved. I dunno if Love is enough for me to stay. Di na ako masaya. Please enlighten me mga sis.

The fact that you can say you "love him with all your heart" means meron ka pang nakikita sa kanya or may mga gawa sya for you that you see as lovable and that binibigyan  mo ng halaga.  Love begets love.
Bakit hindi ka masaya?  Hindi ba importante sa yo mga  loving things he does for you?  Iba ang "want" sa non-negotiable ha. Do not make the mistake of confusing the 2.

Atchaka:  You cannot force the one you love to love you the way you want to be loved.
Examine his language of love:  for showing his love for you.  Read the book Languages of Love.  It is enlightening.
Yang feeling of being unloved mo, baka pag you look at everything objectively eh -- you will realize after all you ARE loved.

I would like to know. Kasi diko alam ang ano tama as a wife.

With marital finances, the one handling it must PROVE  he/she is the better or capable  financial manager
Plus, have proven consistency and integrity. And you must be on the SAME page with him.

At the start, hubby trained me to his preferred system & priorities.  He also had to make me want to share his Grand Scheme of how to get us & our future family into the Big Dream of the truly Good Ggod Life.
Eventually, I proved myself as capable & so gained full control.

Como he wants us to live beneath our means, and put all back into growing the business... Na forecast ko that I will be wanting many many things that will lead us into conflict.  Grabe hangover ko coz I spent a lot of my waking hours with a wealthy Lola.  So, early on in our marriage I decided to have my own independent source of income. My Lola told us girls that having our own source of income is the best insurance.
(so there, baka ang higpit ng hawak sa pera ng hubby mo kasi he has a Big Dream he is saving for.)

And so it goes to this day: I am financially independent, very.  The businesses we own & manage, all started with hubby's funds, are doing very well by the grace of God (thank you).  We own the businesses equally.  What is mine, is mine -- he is aware, but does not have details; I control.    What is his,  is ours -- I have all the details and control.   What is ours, is ours; I have details & control.

So there, the above supports your realization that money is important. It is the picture of the power play, the love, the fears, the doubts & trust or lack thereof in a marital relationship.

There are very good suggestions here, sis macblush. Gusto ko lang magdagdag:

Perhaps you and your husband need to find more activities to spend time on together and also as individuals. Mahirap kasi if you come from being full time employed, busy career people, to becoming both full time unemployed "pensioners". Perhaps your husband has too much energy na he could focus elsewhere na productive (gardening, perhaps?) para yung mga little things hindi na nya magawang pagaaksayahan ng oras pa. Same goes for you, I don't know kung ano ano ba ang nagiging causes ng pagtatalo nyo, but maybe you can also try to be passive din paminsan minsan and let him do things his way.

To live harmonious lives, we don't have to win all the time, we don't have to prove our points all the time, we don't have to get our way all the time. And I don't mean being a doormat either - pero before you pick up a fight, think whether the issue at hand will still matter an hour, day, month, year later?

Ako pag si sisses aquacharly na and glamorosa nagsalita, they really indeed have very good points.

As to the question - is LOVE enough to stay in the marriage?  Para sakin, YES, IF THERE IS LOVE FROM BOTH PARTIES.  Kung isa lang ang mas higit na nagmamahal sa isang walang pake, it is not worth staying. Marriage takes two people, not just one.

[Hmm... as I was escaping my paperwork, I thought of stalking Macblush's older posts...]

Sis, as I was suspecting, there is an emotional abuse, and you know it pala. You already left him, but I assume that you returned. I wonder if there are changes in your husband since you left him last 2011.

I guess hindi TRUE LOVE and nararamdaman mo, but an emotional need. Before you can truly love someone, you must love yourself first, the healthy love. As they say, you cannot give what you don't have, so paano ka magbibigay ng LOVE kung wala ka nito sa sarili mo? Remember the Second Commandment? Love others AS you love yourself. As I understand it, kung paano mo minamahal ang sarili mo, ganon mo rin mamahalin ang mga tao sa paligid mo. If you're loving someone without loving yourself, I guess you're just filling an emotional emptiness.

This was your post back then, baka you might realize something:

Quote from: macblush

MACBLUSH --  why do you doubt yourself now?
You already stepped out pala 2011...  Did he go into Remorse & Reform?  If he didn't realize his faults then, don't hold your breath waiting for that miracle now.

Aquacharly, I guess with all the chances I gave to my husband, I came to a point now if I made a mistake of giving him another chance. Damn! But, I saw how he tried his very best to recover our Marriage. He asked for my forgiveness and He is very willing to  change his bad habits and bad temper. So. Ako sino ba naman ako para tanggihan. Naniwala naman ako kaya nakipag balikan ako ulit. Knowing na this time alam ko magiging ok na kami. During the first month na nagkabalikan na kami. Talagang Big E as in  effort kung effort ang ginawa nya. At we go out on a  date every weekend. Like sobrang mainitin ugali nya. Then after saka sya magsisisi pag kumalma na sya.

To answer your question Macblush if LOVE enough to stay in the Marriage? No.
Well, there's friendship - when you truly like each other, even when you're old and gray. There's commitment - when the feelings fade, you still remember the vows you made in front of God.

However, as your story develops. I think you have a tendency to view yourself as a rescuer, your husband's savior. He has to want to be a better person not FOR YOU but for himself. And maybe, you enable his behavior because you do want him to stay. Sis, let your boundaries be clear and don't give empty threats. If he messes up, let him know how it hurt you and tell him what you will do if he does it again (leave, get counsel, go somewhere safer).

Are you sure you sorted things out with a counselor before you reconciled with him? Did he start seeking healthier friends who can give him unbiased advice and give honest feedback? Maybe hearing it from you doesn't have an effect on him -- he needs to hear from someone else that he has a problem. If he denies that he has a problem, then there's a problem.  What truly changed this time around except for the empty promises?

I see, so 2 years din kayong separated. And siguro sa 2 years na yun marami kang naging realizations about yourself (your strengths and weaknesses), your husband, and your marriage. And then after ng 2 years mong pananahimik, he courted you, nakipag-reconcile sya, he made BIG efforts to prove to you that he really had changed. You saw those changes with your own eyes and you felt the sincerity behind it. But then ngayon, sabi mo nga, umiiba na naman ang ihip ng hangin. You're beginning to be concerned again about his angry outbursts. You tried to talk to him about it, but then deadma lang sya.

It's normal for a wife to want to see her husband change, lalo na't willing naman sila magbago. Looks like your husband really loves you dahil he really went after you. I can see that you both love each other, it is mutual. At first I thought, he wants control lang and power over you, at ikaw tanggap nang tanggap ng mga pasakit, which does not look like love to me.

Is love enough sa ganitong klaseng marriage? Though you two love each other, there is something in between, his abusive tendencies which is part of him. Is this tendency a learned behavior from childhood? Is it part of his genes? Or is it both? Right now, I don't know if there are emotionally abusive people who completely changed by themselves and by will power. I haven't read or heard anyone pa. But currently, what I do know is they can change either by Divine intervention or individual psychotherapy only. Yan kasi may alam na kong cases. With your husband, it seems like his abusive tendency is his baseline behavior, parang default. Although he could change, but it will be inconsistent, worst is, it won't last.

So after you exhaust all your efforts, patience, and resources available to you, and wala pa rin, you need to realize that he might not change at all, magbabago but inconsistent. If you choose to stay for good, then you just have to adjust and adapt the best way you can despite his abusive tendencies. You said you love him, then accept that 'beast' part of him. You said you love yourself, then hold on to your self-esteem and self-worth should you decide to stay. You have the freedom and capability to leave or to stay, napatunayan mo na yan sa sarili mo, so in the end it's your choice.

Whether if LOVE is enough to stay in this kind of marriage, ikaw lang ang makakasagot nyan, kung hanggang saan at hanggang kelan mo sya kayang pakisamahan, intindihin, at pagpasensyahan. No matter how you yell at deaf people and tell them that they're deaf, they're not gonna hear you. And even if they know, what can they do about it anyway? You accept na lang their deafness, accept them na lang for what they really are.

I'm all for marriage. Pero kung babagsak ang self-esteem mo at pagkatao mo in the end, best to walk away for good. You deserve to have a better life.

yeah... may ganyan talagang tao. Some people have undiagnosed personality disorders which disrupt relationships and self-esteem of partners... so kung parang ganito partner mo, you've got to protect yourself financially, emotionally, psychologically, if you will stay.

Love and Money. yan ang importante sa isang marriage...
How can you buy things you both like especially sa bahay if sobrang konti ng Money..
Further, you can't buy happiness with money so you need Love...:)

I love my husband but last night, I decided to leave the house na with my baby of course. Wala naman kaming intense fight before that. Umiwas na lang ako sa gulo kasi hindi ko na gusto how the people around us behave. People na kung tutuusin, hindi namin pinoproblema. My mom said na hayaan na lang si hubby if gusto niya pa kaming dalawin. He said he would tonight, but biglang nag alibi. Well, expected ko naman iyon. I know he wouldn't leave his biological family. What I really hate about my husband? Never siya kumampi sa akin, and never niya ako ipinagtanggol. I still wonder kailan siya aalis sa saya ng mama niya.

Is love enough to stay in marriage?

Yes, it is more than enough. Actually it might be all you need.

Now love as we know is not a feeling. If you will just base your love on your feelings then it won't last. Feelings are fickle.

This is the real meaning of love:

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Hi Macblush,

Yes... of course... you're entitled to make your own decision in your life. It's a good thing that you know you can stand for yourself and alam mo yung magiging hangganan mo. Add to that, your faith is also keeping you strong.

If I may boldly suggest though, when it comes to exerting your effort to help your husband change, siguro 10-20% lang ng energy mo yung ibigay mo. Abuse naman kasi, is not a product of couple dynamics. It's his own behavioral problem, you can only do so much. Yung prayers mo, yun ang i-todo mo. At least he's owning up to his problem now at di nya sinisisi sayo yung actions nya.

And then, 80-90% of your effort, ibuhos mo para sa sarili mo. Right now, you are economically exploited and socially isolated. So maybe you could do something about it to help yourself? Also, for sure, you are emotionally and psychologically wounded, siguro you could take steps to slowly address it. So whether you stay or move on, eh somehow your sense of self is intact.

At tska, don't forget your worth as a person. Ang 1k peso bill, no matter how many times you crumple it and trample on it, its value never changes, it's still 1k. Ganun din yung worth mo as a person, it will not change.

What I do, I set aside a date night every week na exclusive lang yung attention nya saken. Or if I really need to talk to him, just ask nicely to have maybe even just a half hour of his undivided time. And when he does give you that, show him you appreciate it. Show him how happy you are when he gives you the time of day. And remember, you do get what you tolerate.
