Are you ready for Marriage?
« on: May 25, 2014, 08:48:10 am »

Are you sure you are ready for marriage? Not to discourage people from getting married, but I just wanna know, pinag-iisipan ba ito normally ng mga taong ikakasal?

Napansin ko kasi sa kultura natin, if one is aged 26-30 na, society expects the girl to get married na.  Tapos si guy, kahit bata pa (26-30 years old), kelangan na pakasalanan ang GF kasi matagal na naging sila.

Moreso, with all the hype of the wedding preps, ang ganda ganda ng mga display ng mga wedding booths/exhibits, parang forever kang masaya.

But reality check - ang taas taas ng percentage ng infidelity within marriage, lalo pa sa Pinas.  Bakit kaya?

When I got married, hindi ko inisip in this angle. Ano paghahanda kaya kelangan, if ever?  Hindi ko alam.  Pero now that years have passed, I just thought I was not mature enough, he was not mature enough as well.  In short, we were not ready.

As for the readiness,  age factor ba or time na magGF/BF kayo ang iconsider para masasabi na ready kayo?  Probably not, nasa individuals ata iyon.

Kaya ko lang naisip ito, kasi recently sa sports, si famous golfer Rory Mcllroy and si famous tennis player Caroline Wozniacki - broke off their engagement.  They were one of the highest watched out couples by the media in sports over the last 2-3 years.  People saw how in love they were.  Then they got engaged.  They already did all the wedding preps.  Invitations sent out.  Until last week, they broke off the engagement because the guy, Rory, said he is not ready. They are only 23yo and 25yo.

In hindsight, how I wish my ex and I got the courage broke off our engagement like that before. Kasi we ended up not having a happy marriage kasi nga nambabae sya.  He wasn't ready for marriage.  I don't think I was as well. But since everyone expected us to get married since we were together for 10 years or so na, he wanted to get married ASAP.

This thread might be out of topic since tungkol dito lahat about the preps. But I just encourage people to think 100x first before involving yourself in the preps.  Are you ready?  Is he ready?

and idk if superficial ba to, pero di rin ako marunong magluto, and hirap mag mag budget ganon, siguro yung mga bagay, once youre there na saka mo lang talaga matututunan (like sa pag budget)

Nope. At my age, turning 30 this year, I don't think I an ready for such a huge commitment. In the future, yes. Maybe when I'm in my early-mid 30's though nafi-feel ko na yung pressure to bear a child because of my age. Everyone tells me that I should settle down and have my own family but no one ever bothered to ask me if I am ready. I still want to enjoy life as a single individual so when that time finally comes, I can say na I am already at that point na being a homemaker or a wife and mom na yung gusto ko talaga. I believe one should be financially and emotionally stable and prepared before getting married and not just because the society deems a person ready for marriage just because they have reached a certain age.

oo nga, yung iba nag co-compute na ganto, pag this age ka nagka-anak, you'll be XX age by the time they graduate  - mga ganong factor.

kami 11 years na ni bf minsan naiisip ko na we should get settled down na, pero ang naiisip ko yung life after ikasal tsaka ang dami pa nyang pangarap and sa financial medyo di pa kaya talaga tsaka ano na yung pakiramdam after ng kasal yung araw araw kayo magkasama at umuuwi sa iisang bahay.

This is according to my mom (age 55) lahat ng kabatch nya halos hiwalay na sa asawa and ang dahilan is infedelity sila daw yung mga sobrang kinikilig nung araw at mga against all the odds na kwento yung isa pa daw duon ay highschool sweethearts pero naghiwalay din at araw araw nag popost sa fb on how bitter are they na kung mababalik lang nila ang araw na hindi sila kinasal. some of them pa naghirap sa kapapaaral ng anak at nalosyang lang at iniwan. therefore i conclude na masarap lang magmahal at young age yung sobrang kakiligan pa kasi pinauso ng society yung DREAM WEDDING with your DREAM GUY but it's too different sa reality.

don't get me wrong opinion lang naman, after all i want to be with my guy forever haha.. syempre and i still believe in Marriage syempre if you put God sa center ng lahat di ba? :)

does not depend on the age. you should be both emotionally and financially ready.

This is a good thread.
During preps, masyado nakatutok sa wedding day pero wala masyado yung mental preps.

NAPAKADAMING guide na makikita online to see how compatible you really are with your partner. Eto sample http://www.connact.com/~hom/blog/276questions.htm

Based on what I've seen sa mga ibang broken couples, infidelity is not just about the sex. There's something missing, or may sobra, or di lang talaga compatible to start with (akala lang).

Hindi factor sa readiness ang age or time together.

Aside from compatibility and maturity, malaking factor yung personality. As in, kilalang kilala niyo ba yung fiances niyo?

Then there's also finances. Can you afford to get married (wedding) and can you afford to be married (life after)?

How to know you're ready?

We had a long engagement kasi nag ipon din kami. We waited. Nung kinasal na kami after 10 yrs or so, stable na kami. With a house and a car before ako nanganak sa first child namin.

Little did we know na mawawala rin sa lahat. Simply because I don't think we knew what we were getting into.

I agree. Walang guarantee on this. I think nasa sa lalaki. Di daw nambabae at very straight.

Through the years, kasi nga successful sya sa career nya, nakita ko yung lavish lifestyle nya that he always wanted.

and idk if superficial ba to, pero di rin ako marunong magluto, and hirap mag mag budget ganon, siguro yung mga bagay, once youre there na saka mo lang talaga matututunan (like sa pag budget)

Pero now that I am much older, it is about handling relationships.  Like, what if may ibang lalaki/babae nag aaligid sa isa sa inyo.  How do you handle that?
Kapag ang sagot ninyo - ah di iyan mangyayari. Then brush it aside. Pero really, dapat kahit papano may idea ka what to do in these scenarios.  Where do you as a couple draw the line in terms of being close to the opposite gender?  When do you give in and forgive and when do you say enough is enough?

Lahat naman tayo nagpapakasal kasi we think he/she is the best partner para satin at willing tayo idedicate ang buhay natin for them.  But the question is, over the years, walang guarantee na hindi kayo magbabago.  Definitely, changes will happen. Kaso with all that changes, magka-complement kaya or magkasalungat?  Will it draw you both closer to each other or farther apart?  Kasi mukhang these days, 1 out of 10 nalang ang happy marriage.  Ang daming nangangaliwa. Ang daming naghihiwalay. Ang daming nagtitiis. Anong klaseng buhay naman iyan.

In the future, yes. Maybe when I'm in my early-mid 30's though nafi-feel ko na yung pressure to bear a child because of my age.

I have a friend.  She is now in her 40s. Di pa sya kasal, pero may BF sya. Her 4th BF.  She just learned to accept na hindi dumating yung tamang guy for her in time para magkaanak sya.  And I asked her if there are any regrets.  Did she rather have a child per hiwalay or di ok ang pagsasama with hubby, or single and still looking for the one in her 40s.  She said, di nya masabi.  She just felt, his past BFs were never "the one".  Kaya ok lang din.  She thinks she will just settle down when she thinks he is the right guy.

So I there, it is also not a matter whether you are ready.  Ang question din - is your partner is the right guy for you, aside from him being ready.   This is another whole new topic!  Hay buhay, sobrang masalimuot.....

... lahat ng kabatch nya halos hiwalay na sa asawa and ang dahilan is infedelity sila daw yung mga sobrang kinikilig nung araw at mga against all the odds na kwento yung isa pa daw duon ay highschool sweethearts pero naghiwalay din

Exactly, HS sweethearts nga kami. Ever loyal nga daw.  Tapos nung nag asawa kami, gosh, what happened?  Kapag nag uusap nga kami ngayon, we both agreed na dapat di kami nagpakasal. We know now it was one of the wrong moves we made in life.

How much percentage of time does the bride- to-be and groom-to-be spend time in reflecting how life is gonna be once they get married?  Or 90% of their time eh nakagugol sa meetings with the coordinator, preps, flowers, photographer, gowns, venues, etc?

1 hour seminar lang ata yung time nila para magreflect.  That is, if they attend or even listen at all!

Iyang church seminar na iyan, they should prolong it for 1 year, with monthly reflections. At kelangan may result suggesting if the couple should WAIT or PROCEED with their marriage plans.

Based on what I've seen sa mga ibang broken couples, infidelity is not just about the sex. There's something missing, or may sobra, or di lang talaga compatible to start with (akala lang).

Aaah YES sis!

Looking back, my hubby and I were BOTH ineffective communicators. Kasi pansin ko nga nitong pag uusap namin lately, he brought up one topic na sabi nya di nya ma-accept sakin nung araw.  Sabi ko duh!?! San nanggaling yun?  Imaigne, we were married for over 10 years and yet never nya nasabi sakin effectively such that maintindihan ko.

Communication is important. Pero higit sa lahat, for it to be effective, such that naririnig dapat ng kabila ang kino-communicate nung isa.  Otherwise, hindi sya uubra.  So there, isa parin ito sa paghahanda para masabi you are ready for marriage - How to be an effective communicator to your partner.

How to know you're ready?

Yup!  Ang tanong lang, do engaged couples find the time to internalize them - which is applicable and not?

Noong araw, time ko, di pa uso ang net.  So may excuse pako haha. Pero ngayon, I hope people are wiser to make use of these tools. Hindi biro kasi ang pagpapakasal.  Lalo pa sa Pinas na walang divorce.

I was once a bride-to-be.  A very happy one.  And nagkamali ako, everything went downhill after getting married. I wish no one will ever experience what I have gone through by being wiser.

Aside from compatibility and maturity, malaking factor yung personality. As in, kilalang kilala niyo ba yung fiances niyo?

So paano?

Kasi normally pag inlove ka siguro, you always think your partner is your hero at di sya makagagawa ng masama.  So does that mean, you try to test him, if he has the potential to cheat, to lie, to gamble, to be a drunkard, to womanize?  How?  :o

Then there's also finances. Can you afford to get married (wedding) and can you afford to be married (life after)?

Ipon kami and we can afford our wedding (and life after). But guess where the issue came about.

But this is just a minor issue for us. Pero yes, this can be big in some couples.

For me, the idea of "the one" is BS. It takes two people to make a relationship work, hindi lang dahil sya na yung inaakala mong "the one" eh magiging okay ang lahat. Minsan kasi masyado tayong idealistic instead of being realistic na some guy will just come our way who will sweep us off our feet and there will be butterflies in our tummies and the universe will conspire para lang sa inyong dalawa dahil you're meant to be.

What if sya na pala yung "the one" talaga kaso masyado ka madaming hinahanap at hindi ka marunong ma-kuntento that you overlook everything that guy has to offer just because you don't think he is the one for you? OR maybe you just don't want that man or your relationship that bad enough to do everything to make the relationship work. Kaya din siguro nagkakaroon ng "the one - that got away". Sya na yung the one mo sana kaso pinakawalan mo pa. Kasi may hinahanap ka pang iba.

Medyo off topic na nga ito. ;D

------------

Anyway...

Re: Is he the right guy for me? I don't know, this is kinda subjective. But I'd like to do whatever I can to make everything in our relationship "right".

Re: anak with your friend as an example - I don't know her and what's going on inside her head pero I think she is too focused on finding "the one" that she might actually miss the chance of having her own kids which could bring an entirely different kind of happiness from what a man can give. Maybe she has a different definition of happiness which may or may not involve having kids kaya ganun. Meron couple who are happy kahit wala silang anak so to each his/her own nga talaga. :)

Maybe some couples are so into the idea of getting married that they didn't realize what marriage is all about. Yung event ang masyadong napag-focus-an and hindi yung mismong buhay may-asawa. :)

Going 9years with my bf. broke up for 2 years then we get back together. First bf ko din siya. There'd be times na naiinggit na ako with others esp those i see on fb, sunud sunod nababalitaan ko engagement ng celebrities and even frieds, then just last night i witnessed a proposal in a resto hahaha. Nakaka pressure and dami na din ask when are we getting married since tagal na nga namin. It's just that, thinking how are we going to be after wedding ano na? And kung magprpose siya hindi ko alam kung i am going to accept it either kasi there's still something in him that i found immature and childish. I am one of the boys kind of a girl because ihave this feeling of security when i am around them kasi i don't have to think of anything. Most of the time they would do the thinking. Siguro kasi i am the eldest kaya gusto ko ako yung inaalagaan. But with my bf, dahil sa mga immature niyang ugali at self centeredness, lagi kami nag aaway kasi i tend to say ganito ganyan and he won't bother to listen pero pag iba nakikinig siya that's why i tend to feel like a nagger na. Kaya iniisip ko what if we end up together na. Syempre its gonna be a different scenario na. Either magbago siya or hindi. Minsan tuloy i am hoping to be a single mom na lang parang walang sakit sa ulo na hubby. Pero sana he'll change din for the best. He's 30+ na kaya nga i am expecting maturity din so much from him.

this is actually a very good topic. and kudos to the TS for being brave and posting this in the section where all of the wedding preps are happening. i totally agree that sometimes people overlook the fact that marriage is actually a lifetime commitment. its not something u can get out of easily (due to the legal consequences) once u realize that u and your partner are not compatible pala. sometimes we become so fixated on the idea of the "perfect wedding" and become so consumed in the wedding preps without bothering to stop and contemplate if WE ARE REALLY READY for this?

im turning 31 this year and getting married early next year. been with the fiancee for 4 years. and i can say with all conviction that we are both ready to take this next step. matagal din namin pinag isipan if we are both ready financially, emotionally.. and i must say with every step of the way, nararamdaman namin na binibigay talaga ni Lord yung mga signs. I cannot say specifically how.. pero everytime we have hesitations, biglang nagkakaroon ng opportunities or ways for us to realize that we are really heading for marriage.. that we are really meant to take our life's journey together.

i also agree that compatibility is very very important. i cannot stress it enough. considering that you will be spending the rest of your life together, it will really help if you have a certain level of compatibility to begin with. same interest, same line of work perhaps. those little things like hobbies or music etc. im not saying that u shud totally be alike in everything, i still believe that u must have a life apart from your significant other. like own friends and such. but still, there must always be a common factor connecting you through everything. this kind of intimacy is really hard to come by, esp nowadays na ang daming distractions..i know of a couple who will be getting married soon. and most of us are really raising an eyebrow because we know for a fact that they argue almost everyday! about the littlest of things! even now sa wedding preps nila, they argue non stop. now, what kind of life will they have after the marriage? if they think that by getting married, all of that will magically change, then they are in for a surprise.

at the end of the day, no one can really predict what will happen. only God knows what our lives hold. all we can do is hope for the best and pray that our actions are according to His will. di mo rin talaga kasi masasabi. you may have the perfect wedding and may think u already met the perfect partner, like TS, but then end up with a broken marriage. or u may start out full of doubts and hesitations, and end up with a very happy and fulfilling marriage.

i guess another thing to look out for is sometimes we get married for the wrong reasons. i.e. nabuntis kasi si girl so kailangan ipakasal to "save" her. or because nappressure na dahil marrying age na and everyone else are getting married as well. or worse, marrying because it is convenient (i know of someone who recently got married because the guy is rich. as in the girl purposely set out to find rich men to marry. classic gold digger. and true enough she found the man. totally rich and they totally had the grandest wedding ever in tagaytay.) these are, at best, shaky foundations for marriage as well.

I'm getting married -- am I ready? I don't know, maybe not. I'm 26, we have been together for a little over a year pa lang. When I told my friends na engaged kame, some of them asked if I was pregnant, as if it's the only reason to get married.

I don't think you'll ever be ready for marriage (or for any other thing in general). Nung nag-aaral ako, i wasn't ready to go to college after hs, i feel like i wasnt mature enough for university. When i graduated college, i never felt ready for my licensure exam, feeling ko kulang pa yung alam ko. When i was offered my first job, i sure wasn't ready. Feeling ko the task was too huge for an inexperienced yuppie like me. When we decided to get married, of course I wasnt ready. I love my bachelorette lifestyle, i cant give that up yet.

But the thing is -- although i had doubts with the major decisions i made in my life, i chose to make them work. I worked hard to make them work. I chose to go on and take the risks kahit na i know in my heart i'm not ready.

You can never be ready for these things. Paghandaan mo man yan emotionally, financially, physically, even spiritually, you can never be 100% sure because tama kayo, everything changes. What's good and beautiful now maybe evil tomorrow.

Again, i know i'll never be 100% ready. In my head, i believe that i can make things work if i choose to, at least that's what has worked for me in the past. Hindi ko hawak ang ugali ng partner ko -- he may be nice to me now then bukas magcheat sya, i dont know -- but what I can handle is my own, so i'll focus on that. I'll focus on the things that i can control.

My point is, everything is a conscious choice. You can't leave your life to fate. You always make choices, and in reality your options are endless. But you have to choose at one point, and commit to that. Choose to make it work for you. If it doesn't work for you, choice mo pa din how you're going to react to it and handle it.

I may not be completely ready for the life after marriage, but i'm choosing that option with this person. I think that's enough reason to get married.

Sis simang, I think you brought up a good point.  To make it work. The effort of making a marriage work dapat nasa inyong dalawa.  And being CONSCIOUS about it is key.  This IMO is very important.

If both newly married hubby and wife are conscious in nurturing and developing a loving relationship, at sa bawat pagsubok eh ang iniisip nila is to take care of and protect  their relationship, I think they are on the right track.

Just in hindsight, we were never conscious of such things. Kung ano lang mga kelangan gawin in running a household, ginagawa namin.  Pero in terms of relationship building, parang nakaligtaan.

And lastly, sis, I have also been reading your posts here in GT. Personally, from what I have read, your insights and thoughts - you are mature enough and ready to get married. Opinion ko lang naman. Kasi kahit ang bata mo pa, you have an open mind.   I also got married the same age, pero ang layo ng thoughts ko noong araw.  Late bloomer ikanga.  Kaya saludo ako sayo, and keep the good insights coming :)

Congratulations rin on your upcoming wedding sis!   ;)

True, there could be some balance.  But in our conversation kasi, the definition of "the one" is relative. I guess ikaw lang nga makakaramdam nito.  And you are right, being 'the one' does not mean being swept off your feet, but being yourself while always feeling at home when you are with her/him.

This thread is really hitting the nerve. As our wedding day approaches, I actually thinking and asking myself about this :) and what a timely & perfect thread! Anyway, No one can really tell if you're ready or not. You yourself can't even assure and speak for your fiancĂ©'s behalf. I would say no one is really thinking about this and we are just so busy to ask/check ourselves too. The excitement of proposal and preparations are just overshadowing the reality of life. For some, friends or family who asked "are you sure, do you want to this?  or Are you sure he/she is the one" seems to be just an envious person and very negative. Somehow these people concern or not really concern reminds us to really think about it and we should.

We been together for 10 yrs this year and It wasn't easy. Both of us are in our early 30's. I would say we already went through what a normal married couple is going through. We've been through a lot and redeemed each other BUT there are still doubts in my mind. I can only speak for myself that I'm ready that I'm capable of loving unconditionally and because I'm financially independent from him (Actually I earn more than him). I can love a person and lead a comfortable life without sacrificing my sanity but again is he really ready? I don't know even though I would love to believe so.

Right at this moment, I am still marrying this person. Not because of what the society expects from me as a woman in her 30's (though it adds a little pressure) but because when I looked back on what we we've been through and we made it! We choose to give each other a chance. I always try hard not to only look at the fairy tale side of our story but our what we been through in reality of life and what he does to compensate. Still, no one can assure if our marriage will last forever. The fairy tale of wedding is only a day but to make it last forever depends on how much you guys want to work on it (We did worked so hard to get in this stage of our lives). As long as you guys both knows what kind of work it will demand and you guys are willing to do it. Of course on top of everything, as long as you guys share the same values, dreams and a God centered life... we should not worry that much and just take a LEAP OF FAITH.

As for the readiness,  age factor ba or time na magGF/BF kayo ang iconsider para masasabi na ready kayo?  Probably not, nasa individuals ata iyon.

Though I wouldn't say that age alone explains everything, I still think it can be a factor. Iba ang disposition ng tao depending on their age. Iba ang needs, iba ang environment. For instance, if one is in their early 20's, just had their first job and all of their friends are in the same boat, there's a very good chance that person will rebel if was suddenly deprived of experiences and luxuries that their single friends are enjoying. Kahit pa ginusto niya to get married, initially.

I don't know why people get married before they've even had this discussion or have had time to truly look into themselves. I think most of us see marriage as an end. An inevitability. Which is why so many of us feel frustrated and scared when things don't work out as planned kahit ba in retrospect, all roads were pointing to a disaster. We also see marriage as a solution to all our problems. Like, if you're in a relationship but you sleep with other people on the side, you think once you get married, that tendency will magically dissipate.

Personally, I'm not ready. Neither is my bf. This is something we've always discussed and we've made plans na rin naman though we're not officially engaged. (Superstitious kasi ako--I don't want to get engaged kasi hindi na ako makakapag-travel kasi di ba malas daw yun 'pag you're hitting a milestone tapos gumagala pa. Katakot! ;D ) But we're happy where we are and we know that we want to get married eventually. Like what others have mentioned, hindi yung idea that we know for sure, we can guarantee that we'll love each other forever that makes me want to take a leap. It's the knowledge that no matter what curveballs life throws us, we have the ability to bounce back.

simang

if you're asking yourself this question and find it hard to answer it - you are not ready.
if you find all sort of excuses to not do it then you are not ready
if you are reading this post and you don't get what I mean, get all defensive and throw examples of failed marriages and points to consider before you get married, then you are not ready.

noone really is. and not time, experience nor age can help you be. walang nakakaalam. walang nakakaguarantee. walang formula. kung inaakala ng karamihan na nagmamadali ang iba dahil sa age or what the society thinks, pwedeng tama, pero pwede din nating isipin na baka they want to start working a relationship as a married couple soon. it is a decision. and a mature one at that.

emotional maturity for me is tama na nandun dapat. it takes two adults to make grand decisions like this and make it work ika nga.

but yes, this is a good thread to read for those who get so caught up in the grandiosity of their events na nakakalimutan nila na what you need to be prepared for is the life after.

for those soon to be married like me. good job. it takes adults to go through thoughts of uncertainties, read on this thread and still know they're ready.  :)
