Asthma in Kids

Hi sisses, my youngest was diagnosed with asthma yesterday. It actually runs in the family. My dad has asthma (the full one, with attacks and all medications).

My 2 older kids have mild asthma just difficulty in breathing and weak immune system, but this time it's like what my dad has.

My youngest was born premature and at 3 months he was hospitalized due to severe pneumonia and now that he is 11 months, he now has asthma.

I'd like to learn more about asthma in kids and how do you prevent them from triggers, what to expect, doctors and of course your experiences in taking care of your children with asthma.

Same here sis.I have a 5 y/o daughter with asthma and allergic rhinitis pa.Her allergo placed her on a maintenance na kasi last year  ang dalas mag asthma..I suggest na sa allergologist or pedia pulmo mo ipacheck para mabigyan ng proper meds....

Forever na ba ang maintenance nila? Ang hirap nga eh, parang bawal lahat. There are some naman who suggested that I let my kids play sports, those who have asthma raw na naging athletic, nabawasan daw [textspeak!] pag atake ng asthma nila.

Who's your allergo sis? I'll be scouting for one na okay with kids and accredited din ng Maxicare, sayang eh. How much is the usual fee for allergologists or pedia pulmos?

^ Which is your preferred hospital, sis?  My kids' allergologist is Dr. Michelle De Vera from Medical City.  She accepts Maxicare and Medicard holders.  She's very good in explaining the condition, course of treatment and avoidance of triggers.  I like her.

I have asthma. It worsened during my first preg but so far with my second, wala pa kong major attack, hopefully wala (fingers crossed). Anyway, ako kasi normally mag-aallergy muna (pantal pantal) tapos saka ko hindi makakahinga.

Anyway, pinantal daughter ko kanina. I don't know if she has asthma kasi whenever we go to my allergologist - Dra. Remedios Ong of Infant Jesus/ Chinese Gen to have her checked, nakakaloka kasi ipapaflow meter din niya ako and it would turn out na ako ang sinusumpong and my daughter just needs to have her nose cleaned thru suction para lumabas yung sipon. So ang siste, ako ang napapainom ng sangkatutak na gamot.

Bottom line, gusto ko ilipat yung daughter ko ng asthma doctor. Second opinion lang kumbaga.

Probably within Makati area sis. Baka you might know someone very good too just like your allergologist. Ang hirap din kasi talaga makakuha ng okay na doctor.

Natawa naman ako, imbis na si baby, ikaw tuloy ang pinapainom.
If you have asthma kasi or you know someone who has, tendency aware na tayo sa symptoms, kaya when it comes to our children mas alert tayo.

Go seek for another allergo, yung hindi ikaw ang paiinumin kundi si baby naman ang aasikasuhin... para ma-asses din si bebe...

@cheska, wala akong alam within Makati.  My immunologist naman (she also treats kids and adults with asthma and allergy), si Dr. Jovy Abong, sa Asian Hospital ang clinic.

pang 3rd month na ng daughter ko ng seretide.so far ok naman.wala namang attack.meron din kasi syang allergic rhinitis kaya may nasal spray din.kailangan din ng follow up para daw ma assess ng doctor kung diretso pa gamot or hindi.sana lang di masanay kasi baka pag tinigil na balik na naman asthma at sipon nya.sa perpetual help ang allergo namin.P600 consultation.nag swimming lesson nga sya last summer pero parang walang effect.

I suggest to work with an allergologist/immunologist you really trust... and commit to a certain lifestyle.

Like maybe you can look into your diet too.

hi. my son was also diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, we've done na both the food & aero alergen skin test. his allercologist is really very good, kc she'll explain everything. pm me for her contact no. may clinic sya sa rob faura, may health card kc anak ko eh, but i think nasa 650 per visit proffee nya

Sayang sis, malayo smen Asian. Pero marami nga ring good doctors in Asian... siguro may 5 na narefer na sken, kaya lang sa malayo smen... Di bale, in no time, I'm sure may mahahanap na rin ako... Dito pa sa GT...

Mare, swimming nga rin ang advice sa'min. Actually ayoko ngang masanay sa medicines ang mga anak ko, kasi kapag tinigil, mas nahihirapan sila. Tapos pataas ng pataas ang gamot in terms of sa tapang... And nangyari ito sa dad ko, hinahanap-hanap ng katawan niya yung mga gamot niya... Pero need din kasi talaga nila eh... Hay... I'm torn tuloy.

I'm so glad, may nakakaintindi rin ng nararamdaman ko towards asthma and thank you all for your advices and referrals and experiences.

By the way, when my youngest was diagnosed with asthma, may cough pa siya at that time, he was prescribed to take Procaterol Meptin Bronchodilator Syrup for 5-7 days.

Then on the follow-up check-up, he was prescribed with Ketofin Zadec Drops which costs P900 for a 30ml bottle. Grabe, mahal pala ng gamot talaga ng may hika. He is asked to take this for 3 months. May mga nakagamit na ba sa inyo nito sis?

Hirap din malaman kung saan ang allergy ng bata. Minsan changes in weather lang, hinihika na. Or sa gamot na pinaiinom. Ang mga allergologist kasi ayaw i-test yung bata for allergies agad-agad. Like in my daughter's case, my allergo just asked me to keep a journal of allergy attacks. Last January and February, grabe ang asthma nya. In two instances, she was prescribed with steroids dahil hindi na kaya ng nebules. Pero ngayon naman, parang wala lang. Sisipunin sya kapag magbabago ang panahon, hanggang duon lang. Pero kapag tumutungtong ang November hanggang February, asahan mo, in between those months nasa ospital kami.

I have a nebulizer kit ready just in case there is a bout of an asthma attack. Kapag medyo maliit pa kasi, hanggat maaari, ayaw din ng allergo magbigay ng maintenance med that should be taken on a daily basis. Pero kapag kailangan talaga, binibigyan, especially if the child has already been prescribed 3x with steroids in a span of one year. Bawal ata yung more than 3x in a year kasi delikado sa bata.

My son has an asthma also. It was diagnosed when he was 3. Our pedia-allergologist, Dra. Cuajungco of TMC performed an allergy test. She teaches us environmental prevention and the likes. My son has been on seretide for few months lang. Then I tried giving him honey everyday. I don't know how it works pero na-lessen yun attacks and mas mild na. I also enrolled him in swimming classes para ma-streghten yun lungs nya. Mutivitamins and Vitamin C everyday together with 1 tsp honey.

@ sis inkslinger: Minsan talaga hindi natin matantiya ang cause of attacks nila. Pero ngayon madalas lalo na sa change of weather.

@ sis mdy: So it's true nga talaga na it will strengthen their lungs, yan din advice sa amin. Ipag-basketball ko rin daw yung mga kids. Natatakot naman ako, kasi minsan pag swimming, para daw silang nauubusan ng hininga tapos pag basketball, hinihingal agad. Nakakaawa tignan pero ganun daw talaga sa umpisa. There's this athlete-teacher I met kasi, he was so thin daw when he was a child, labas-pasok daw siya sa hospital due to asthma attacks and he never dreamt of being an athlete kasi nga raw hikain siya, but now, ang lakas niya maglaro. You'll never think na he has asthma. Hindi na raw siya gaanong hinihika, when he started playing soccer, basketball, swimming, and a lot pa. Kaya advice niya sken, expose the kids to sports daw. Sabi ko nga, teka iipon muna ako chaka try ko magresign sa work ko para masamahan ko palagi yung 3 kids ko... hehe
