I'm turning 28 this year and it was just last month that it hit me that I may be going through quarter life crisis for the last few years.

I'm a BSHRM degree holder, tried working at a restaurant for 5 months after graduation. I wasn't earning enough so I entered the call center industry. I told myself that I'd give myself 6 months and I should be promoted by then. Aaaaand now, 3 years, 8 months and still counting and I'm still stuck as an agent. I tried, believe me, pero sobrang pulitika eh. Takot naman ako umalis ng company. Takot ako mag start all over again. Maging probationary na naman, kelangan na naman magpakabait and all.

When I look at my high school mates FB wall, sobrang napagiwanan nako. A few of them became Flight Attendants, they've traveled the world na! Eh ako, I have a 22 month old son at nagtatrabaho kami magasawa para lang makasurvive hanggang sa susunod na sweldo. Sakto lang talaga. I feel so deprived in everything!

Blah blah blah. I know, spell W-H-I-N-I-N-G. I feel so bitter. Actually I am. Buti nalang may gantong thread, I know I am not alone.

Sabi nila napaka negative thinker ko daw. Do you girls feel the same way?

pansin ko lang, wala mashadong self-help/ "how to cope" articles online/google to help those experiencing this.. im glad may forum na ganito

shucks i dont know / dont have the guts to change anything in my life right now even though it sucks!  :'(

Priceless

Bad News: self help books and advices, even though all well meaning will not be of much help. Lahat kasi tayo I think, unique ang circumstances and unique ang outlook sa buhay that pag may mga "down" moments na ganito, mahirap makahanap ng madali at instant na solusyon.

Good News: It's just a phase. Karamihan sa atin dadaan sa ganitong phase and like I said, dahil unique tayong lahat, ang outlook natin sa mga phases na ganito will be different. And the good news is, like any phase, may katapusan din lahat ng yan - and ika nga, you must learn how to roll with the punches.

Many years ago, I found myself in this situation. I was unhappy with my job even though it paid me well, allowed me to travel, etc etc. One day, there came a tipping point na sabi ko sa sarili ko, "that's it, I quit". So I tendered my resignation and the next day (buti nalang hindi mahigpit yung company sa akin) I flew abroad where I waited out my so called quarter life crisis. All that time, nakitira ako sa mga kamag anak ko - may ipon ako pero wala akong ginawa kungdi stay at their home and be their designated househelp, housesitter, driver, yaya, gardener, petsitter, etc. Nung naubos na ang angst ko, frustration, at more importantly, pera, sa pagss-soul-searching ko, I went back to Manila to find a job - any job - even if it meant that I would start from zero. But fortunately (and dahil sa tapang ng loob) I landed a better, if not the perfect job for me. Still stressful, but looking back, I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I have now if not for it.

All the time that I was in my crisis phase, ang pinanghahawakan ko lang talaga is my dad's statement na, susuportahan nya ako kahit anong maging decision ko - and to take my time in getting to that decision.

So let me do the same for you - wag kang matakot to look for something better - kayang kaya mo yan.

i'm 28. and parang nasa ganitong stage na rin ako.

no desires. stopped dreaming...i just don't know what i want. or siguro alam ko, pero parang napagod na ako mangarap.

been readings some books on positive thinking, praying a lot...magiging okay for a time, then boom...iiyak na lang ulit bigla.

when i'm at home, sobrang maiinitin din ang ulo ko. madalas di kami magkasundo ni mommy. i don't know why pero never ko kasi nararamdaman na kami yung pamilya na nagbibigay suporta sa isa't isa. broken family so parang everyone's independent din.

I think Im experiencing this. Im turning 26 this year btw. I dont know what to do with my life!

Work - im in a big company. Promoted to supervisory position. Pero im still not happy. I cannot move upwards (asst manager) sa ibang company kasi di business related course ko. Every time I go to an interview ganun lagi ang concern. I really wanna move out kasi im not happy na with my work. Buti na lang I have the best officemates to keep me sane.
Financial - hay. I made a lot of financial mistakes in my life.

I really quit my job and be a bum for the mean tome, pero since alam kong hindi ako sususportahan ng family ko, natatakot akong gawin. And im afraid also not to get another job.

UPDATE!!!!

i just went to a psychiatrist today and i was diagnosed with depression and was prescribed medication. i might not further update here kasi baka ma-OT na. because of the confirmed diagnosis, sa "Health Concerns" na ang appropriate thread for my updates regarding this.

siguro as a last note here: there's a normal "quarter-life crisis" that poeple go through, pero minsan it could be utterly something else pala an hindi na siya basta "quarter-life crisis". watch out for the symptoms of depression and see a psychiatrist if you have some of those symptoms. :) take care!

Hi Sis Meimei,

want to ask how much yung sa check up?

and back to topic:

I have been experiencing this phase pa din siguro for over a year na.. I considered this year a very frustrating year, andaming changes na i dunno how i will be able to cope up. Still depressed pa din just like last year and a week ago, I celebrated my 29th bday, literally wala akong naachieve.

I just continue to pray and hope na sana things will turn out better pa din for me in time. :(

hi everyone,

i just like to say it's Facebook's fault
sometimes i think about the benefits of FB
it's true that it has its advantages...but it seems to me
that FB has a lot of disadvantages too
one of the factors why i broke up with my exbf is because of jealousy over FB
and one of the main factors most of us are having quarter life crisis is jealousy over our
classmates posts on FB

so im really hating on FB now!

This is true! I feel the same way sis! kaya minsan parang gusto ko nlang idelete ang facebook ko.

Just last year, I took a short course sa GSTA as a front desk, ayun ok naman, kaya hoping ako na mag work out ang lahat..

^ Hello sis!

It's just our point of view. Actually I'm happy for those, but what can we do? na pressured din ako sa mga posts nila.. Hope you understand our/my sentiments :)

hi  :)

Pareho tayo ng pinag dadaaanan. And mabuting napapag usapan ito kasi not everyone has the time or the effort to talk about things that really matter in life.

It is true that each and every one of us have this feeling of inadequacy. Maski tanungin pa natin ang mga anak nina Zobel at Ayala, they still have that feeling from time to time. Ofcourse I'm not saying that's true, but what I'm saying is, should they ever have some regrets in life, then their measure of success or failure is accoring to their standards.

I am sure that what the Zobels or the Ayalas feel is the same psychological and emotional response ng isang iskwater na nakikita na yung kapit bahay nya may bagong bentelador o di kaya bagong component samantalan sila, bumbilya pa din yung laman ng bahay.

In your case, and in my case as well, especially for us Facebook users who have friends that are more or less the same social level as ours, it really is hard not to compare what we have achieved so far with what they have achieved. Some social commentators even say that Facebook is the 21st century form of the idiom "keeping up with the Jones."

This means, kung dati mejo naiingit tayo sa kaklase naten sa gradeschool na may bagong pencil case o di kaya yung sapatos na umiilaw ilaw, at least we only have to deal with those feelings of jealousy when we are inside the classroom. the problem with the Facebook phenomenon is that we are bombarded with photos of our friends' new ipads, new iphones, new cars 24/7 or even whenver we log on to our Facebook accounts. And it is very painful.

In my own case, when I kind of realized that glossing over my friends' photos of delicious food or vacation pics or the new phone that they have, I tell myself that there are things that my friends are better at than I am, but there are also things in which I am much better at than my friends.

For example, most of my friends have graduated from the Ateneo or De Lasalle. On the one hand, I feel bad because I was not able to experience the school spirit or the school pride attached to the name of my school. In the Philippines, iba yung dating pagka graduate ka ng ADMU or DLSU.  On the other hand, I feel good about myself because I got my undergraduate degree from one of the good universities in New York (But I live in Metro Manila). So yes, I feel  alienated because I do not "belong" to the country's most exclusive schools. Naiingit ako pagka nag popost sila ng mga pictures nila na nasa UAAP game sila or whenever they wear the blue or green university jacket. But then, I realize, teka, iilan bang mga undergradaute students  ang nakakapag aral abroad?

Now, that does not mean I don't have jealousies of my own, kasi nung nasa New York ako, I no longer compared myself with Ateneans or Lasalistas. I began to compare myself with the Ivy Leaguers with the question: bakit may mga ibang Filipinos na sa Harvard or sa Princeton nakapag aral, bakit ako hindi?

And oh my God did I feel terrible. It's terrible having that feeling that I'm the tail of the lion rather than the head of the rat.  Until I realized, IT IS! It really is terrible to feel that way.
So I decided to come back to the Philippines where I know I can have an edge over a much bigger number of people. So ngayon, whenever people from the up and up ask me, san ka ba gumraduate, Lasalle, Ateneo, UP? O diba?

That's my edge, but on that aspect alone. May mga ibang tao na ka-age ko na yung edge nila nasa Math, nasa Accounting, nasa Medicine, nasa business... and alam ko din naman na hindi ko kaya makipag  sabayan sa mga ganun because that's not my forte. I'm sure you also have an edge over me in alot of areas as much as other people have their edge over us in other aspects of life.

I guess what I'm trying to point out is, for us people having quarter-life crises, let's try to to look into ourselves and find what our strengths and weaknesses are. Once we find our strentghs, let's move into an area where we can say "Oo nga, hindi ako katulad mo sa ganyang aspect, pero hindi mo ako katulad sa ibang aspect; youre good at what you're doing, but I'm also good at what I'm doing and in fact, I can do better than you in some things."

Last but not the least, eto lang yung observation ko sa mga taong nag popost ng mga gadgets or new cars or vacation pictures nila sa FB, and yes I am not generalizing because I have my own hang-ups but not in the way of material things but in other aspects of life: What I've observed is that some of  these people have their own unique hang-ups in life and that theyre trying to compensate these hang ups by showing the world the things they can buy or the things they can do. This is especially true for some people who were born poor in the Philippines but have made it big time in the United States. It might look disgusting but it is a natural human reaction.  (One can make the argument that kung ang taong yun walang hang up sa buhay, bakit kelangan pa nyang i-announce sa buong mundo sa facebook status nya na bibili sya ng Rolex kinabukasan o di kaya sasakay sya sa 1st class mula manila papuntang LA.)

It's all about our approach to these circumstances in our lives. For all we know, there is a deeper layer of story behind the picture. Some people post pictures of themselves in mansions they dont own or 5 star hotel rooms, pero nakatira naman pala sa condomium. Some people have pictures of themselves with a new ipad or a new iphone but for all we know they have to scrimp 6 months of their salary so they can afford the gadget.
Some people drive luxury cars in makati but for all we know, they might be having troubles with their amortization (which might explain why some luxury car owners in Manila still do not have e-pass or never bother taking SkyWay).

I'm not saying that we should be pessimistic about other people's successes. All I'm saying is, Facebook more often than not only tells one side of the picture.

Hay, does quarter life crisis reoccur? I had mine several years ago and right now alam ko na talaga where I would want to go kaya lang it is taking so long. I would also agree that Facebook plays a great role, kasi di maiwasan na "magcompare notes" and it is kind of depressing. Gusto ko sana i-deactivate muna ang FB, pero I think ma-praning naman lalo ako as I want to be in the "know". It takes awhile din to reframe my thinking and get back on track --- my own track. I also eat chocolate.
