Hello!  I think i have all the symptoms for TMJ, kaso kaka extract lang ng lower left wisdom teeth ko last month, pwede na ba start ng treatment? also, mas lumala sha nung na extract wisdom tooth ko, nagka facial pain na ko ang earache, plus temple pain.. :( could you recommend a good TMJ specialist near PRoject 8 QC? i have been checked by Dr. ROnald Panganiban from Clinica Dentale de Manille, ok ba sha?. do anyone know him? THanks much!

Napacheck-up ko na ang TMJ ko. Sabi kailangan ko raw ng splint ata yun, I think it's for TMj and also para ma-itama ang bite ko, hindi kasi aligned. Kaso magbrebraces na ako, so maayos rin ba ng braces yung TMJ or kailangan talaga splint muna before tmj? Kasi if kaya naman ng braces ang tmj then diretso braces na siguro ako.

Sis, I'm not a dentist but I also have TMJ. I read here somewhere na dapat splint muna before braces kasi baka lumala ang TMJ mo if diretso agad braces. Ako kasi when I was diagnosed with TMJ, nagsplint muna ako. tapos now Phase II na ako which is the braces. May overbite din ako and butterfly pa ang 2 front teeth ko. Now anlaki na ng improvement. Even yung TMJ symptoms ko nawala na unless kumain ako ng crunchy which is a no-no for tmj and may braces. :))

HTH!

Hi sis andee_gurl! nako pareho tayong ng condition, overbite rin saka butterfly yung 2 front teeth. How long ka na nakabraces para makita improvement? Medyo hesitant kasi ako magbraces hehe pero sabi sa akin 2 years daw. Gaano katagal yung splint mo bago ka pinayagang magbraces? Thanks nga pala  ;D

Splint ko sis almost a year din ata if I'm not mistaken kasi medyo pasaway ang jaw ko e. medyo tabingi na rin bite ko when I first went to the dentist. As for the braces nagstart ako nun september and after 3months dun ko nakita yung visible na effects nun braces ko hindi na butterfly. Sabi ng dentist ko the most na raw [textspeak!] 18-20months :-) mabilis na rin kung tutuusin basta masipag ka bumalik sa dentist. :-)

We've studied about the Temporomandibular joint during our anatomy class, and our prof was an ENT. It can be caused by stress daw, and to test if you are showing signs of TMJ disorder is by putting 4 fingers (positioned vertically) in your mouth. Your mouth should be able to accommodate all 4. If it's too painful or your mouth can only fit 1-3 fingers with or without pain, then better get your jaw checked. I think both ENTs and Dentists specialize on this case. :)

What is PHASE 1 AND PHASE II ???????????

Dentists use a variety of treatment modalities for treating TMJD and these may be divided into Phase I and Phase II Therapy.

Why are there 2 phases?
Phase I is generally conservative and reversible.
Phase II is irreversible

Sometimes there is NO phase I and phase II.
Sometimes dentists go straight to phase II!!!!
THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

Phase I treatment
-----------------------
Two words sum it up...... -> TMJ stablisation.

The purpose of Phase I Therapy is to eliminate muscle spasms, TMJ swelling and dislocation (if possible), and generally reduce any type of pain and inflammation.
This treatment includes the use of splints/oral orthotics to balance your bite .

Also attention is given to - chiropractic treatment for the upper cervical (neck) area, physical therapy, postural analysis, airways and breathing analysis, swallow patterns and medication/pain relief.
These being the major areas that usually will be addressed by the treating dentist. TMJD really is a WHOLE BODY disorder.

Phase II Treatment
-------------------------
Phase II treatment is, by definition of the American Dental Association, non-reversible and invasive therapy.

What entails Phase II??
* adjustment of the occlusion (adjusting the "bite")
* orthodontic treatment, the placement of crowns
* equilibration (grinding) of teeth
* surgery of all types
(be aware of the physician who recommends this without any phase I modalities of treatment)
* a combination of some of the above treatments

All of these modalities most certainly produce changes which can't be reversed.

The purpose of Phase II Therapy is to definitively correct any discrepancies, if necessary, between the upper and lower jaw

Please note that Phase II modalities will create permanent changes in your bite and cannot be easily reversed.
NOTE - VIP!!!None of these procedures should be attempted unless you have demonstrated significant pain relief in Phase I therapy.

If you or a family member or friend who suffers with a TMJ problem has doubt or unresolved pain, get a second or even third opinion before any Phase II Treatment is initiated.

Nakakasad naman, I read here na need muna splint bago ang braces to treat TMJ. Eh ako naglagay agad ng brackets ang dentist ko, since Dec 2010 pa and until now wala pang ginagawa to treat my tmj, except for the white something (parang colgate na matigas) na pinatong sa molar teeth ko (left and right). Hayyy feeling ko tuloy lumala yung tmj ko. Yun nga ang concern ko talaga sa dentist nun eh, to treat my tmj kayalang parang di pa rin gumagaling. Huhuhu.. nakakalungkot=(

hanshellite, you can ask for a second opinion.  Ang alam ko nauuna naman talaga ang braces before splint. Reading through forums should not replace a consultation with a dentist or ortho.

Glad to have found this thread.

Stress is one factor but usually ang dahilan bakit nagkakaroon ng tmj dysfunction is a bad bite. :)
