I think washing of hands is fine, you can't totally not wash your hands diba especially if you're going to eat or use the bathroom.

Sis khriseee, yes bawal daw fruits and veggies during gelai kasi sabi ng mga oldie malalamigan daw tiyan  :)
Sis m lim, sis puwede magwash ng hands pag wash ng down under, toothbrush, before and after you eat, etc.

kahit di pa ako preggy, i want to follow this pag manganganak na ako.. sabi kasi ng matatanda (my mom and lola naniniwala dito as well as other oldies sa lugar namin kahit na tubong-taguig kami - no province), di pa agad mararamdaman ng katawan ang mga "kapabayaan" nung kabataan pa lang.. pag nagka-edad na dun sila magsusulputan..
before anything else i think it's proper to practice proper hygiene first since you need to take care of a newborn baby. here in singapore not taking a bath is highly discouraged due to hygiene reasons. and another thing, ge-lai originated in china, the weather there is FAR different from the weather in pinas wherein it's hot all year round. so yung mga hindi pwede malamigan na stuff that's definitely understandable there, not in a tropical country. you can still take a bath as long as hindi ka madbabad and lukewarm water dapat. just want to share what my ob and the doctors here normally say about ge-lai. yung sa mga food okay lang since it's understandable, but yung hindi maligo? oh come on...

^yes sis, to each his own :)

^^i totally understand sis your point.. naiintindihan ko din yung point ng oldies samin.. kung iisipin yung present at hygiene ang topic eh nakakainis talaga yung malagkit at mainit na pakiramdam ng di paliligo, pero i mentioned na di naman porke di naligo eh madumi ka, puwede naman maglinis ng di nagbubuhos.. puwede naman mag-freshen up in some other ways like punas punas at may aircon naman :) yung ligo kasi diba as in buhos sa buong katawan para sumingaw ang init ika nga ng matatanda.. eh ang gelai nga is para di pumasok ang lamig sa loob.. so ibig din siguro sabihin retain yung body temp.. pero kung future ang iisipin, we also need to take care of our body para na din sa mga anak at (in my case) magiging anak natin..  oldies nga ang living examples.. when they reached a certain age, yung mga di daw nag-gelai felt pains/aches/varicose/spider veins na di agad nafi-feel ng nag-gelai.. there are still a lot of chinese here sa pinas kaya no wonder na-influence nila tayo..  at makikita din siguro effect ng gelai sa life expectancy ng tao dati at ngayon :) my great grand mother died at 98, my grand mother is 85 and still healthy :) again, opinion lang sis ;)

^and i just shared the history of this ge-lai thing :) chinese din ako but not all of my relatives practiced this. my mom didn't practice the entire ge-lai practice and yet wala cyang varicose veins or kung ano mang sakit na sinasabi nila. my lola, madaming varicose veins even if she practiced ge-lai sa lahat ng panganganak nya. nasa lahi at kung paano mo alagaan ang katawan mo nakasalalay ang mga ganyan. i don't think it has something to do with ge-lai. wala naman ganyan ang ibang lahi :)

what I'm just trying to state here is, yung mga practice sa ge-lai when it comes to food there's a logical explanation behind it but don't sacrifice your hygiene dahil lang sa takot kayong malamigan or so kaya usually lukewarm water ang nirerecommend nila kung gusto mo mag quick bath. and the foods that's usually suggested is yung mga tinatawag na di-yet foods para mawala ang lamig sa katawan i.e. cooking fried pigeon with sesame oil, ginseng chicken, etc.

me i practiced ge-lai tea/tonic as water and welch grapes as much as possible mom told me not to drink water, kasi ge lai is so you can flush toxins and water kaya no water, didnt take a bath for 3 weeks hinilot ako so okay lang 3 weeks and half she was also the one who prepared my first bath ( dahon etc) afterwards massage again, breakfast, lunch, dinner cooked by an aunt who specializes in ge-lai food, tried not to wash my hands too much, bought cetaphil for my entire body so i dont need to rinse just use damp washcloth to rinse off, then used dry shampoo for the hair, i had a thong( from my makati med stay) so i used that to wash down under using cotton balls. So there at least still managed to be hygienic during ge-lai :) my delivery was via cs but even so was able to used binder right after operation, binder is also for the wound to close together and heal rapidly.

Me I also practiced ge lai, pero Hindi na un exagge like you have to wear gloves pa before washing hands, some kasi totally bawal magbasa even hands. I washed my hands, I brush my teeth, wash down there, then use towel to wipe sa body. But the water was warm with a little alcohol, and I did that twice a day so basically nababasa naman talaga ako, pero I just followed the basics para no regrets, haha! But sa 2nd week I couldn't help na un feeling kadiri sa hair kaya I used a no rinse shampoo for the hair kasi it was really oily na. Sa food naman every morning I drink native hot chocolate, then [textspeak!] water ko is un o-tso parang Meron Mga dates masarap naman. Then I also drank sera Vallo. Then eat Mga pigeon with sesame oil, liver, and other food na cooked in sesame oil. Then drank lapu lapu soup almost everyday, cs kasi ako. Lapu lapu helps in healing faster. And no gulay on gelai NGa.

Sis mlim,
Before I gave birth I bought a binder maiden form, it's like a corset type na Meron bone, e cs ako so I wasn't able to use it. I saw sa mama way they are selling a binder and it's made of bamboo fiber daw, you might want to try that. After I gave birth Hindi na ako naka binder I just used girdle panty type, I bought from debenhams, mas comfortable kasi ako with girdle. :)

-no ligo for a month, not to the point of not washing hands. (kasi dahil din sa hygiene).
-drink mga herbal/ tonic soup. (duck/ native chicken soup).
-dont drink cold water.
-eat soft-boiled egg everyday kung kaya/or every other day.

yun lang naman yung mga important things that i should remember daw when having my ge-lai. I'm into my 7th month na, kaya medyo malapit lapit na rin...=) sana lang makaya ko ito!!

sis kaya mo yan, look on the bright side may concern sa iyo yung fam ng husband mo, yun iba nga diyan wala pake sa ge-lai ng manugang nila, its good they show concern kasi para syo din yan. Me i thought dko kakayanin but kaya naman pala hehe may available sa rustans essences dry shampoo i forgot the brand, meron din sa watsons no-rinse shampoo tiis-tiis nalang. I used them during ge-lai every other day or whenever i feel like it hindi naman naging oily hair ko at tolerable naman. Use mga wash like cetaphil para you dont need water to rinse-off. Good luck sis! :)

Sis m_lim you can try any chinese drugstore/herbal store. Ask rin about the other meds to yake, there is one you take after giving birth for 3 days, then another 2 weeks after. I forgot what its called pero you have to cook it sa claypot pa, kinda ezpensive pa, my mom bought mine from hk and it was 6k for 3 drinks lang. It tasted horrible :(

After my gelai if i choose to have another baby ill make sure i won't give birth around summer!!
