Potty-training tips
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:38:00 pm »
Hi mommies!  Can you share potty-training tips?  I want to potty-train my two year-old sons.  So far, they know how to say poo-poo and do not object to doing it on the toilet seat (we put a potty seat on a regular toilet seat whenever they use it).  However, they've started to fool us by saying poo-poo even when they don't feel the urge to do so.   :D  I want them to enjoy the process and not feel any pressure.  As a mom though, I am eager to save on diapers ASAP. :)

My son went through this din. Where he'd say he needed to pee or poop when he really does not need to go. My take on this is, believe them. And if they end up not going, no biggie.

I actually was too lazy to read potty training books. I just put my son in cloth training pants nung una. There were days when he'd be ok with them and there were days when he wanted his pocket diapers. I just went along with it. When we were regularly doing the training pants na, I slowly introduced underwear. Ganon din, there were days he'd be ok with it and days where he wasn't. Of course it helped when the print was Spiderman. :)

I guess my approach to potty learning would be quite the same as what my approach would be to weaning from the breast if I were actively weaning. Acknowledge where he is at and respect that but at the same time slowly encouraging them to wean from the diaper.

We had a few accidents here and there but we didn't make a big deal out of it. I just encouraged him and acknowledged him when he used the potty.

It definitely was not one of those overnight stories that you read/hear about. It was a longer process for us. I started when he was a little over 2 and he was completely potty learned before he turned 3.

fortunately my son learned when he was 2.5 yrs old. kaya at night na lang un nappies nya

I can say "I just successfully potty trained my son" .. I started around May.. everyday.. he sits in his potty for 10 mins.. then naging half hour.. then 1 hour..  syempre.. para hindi mainip ang anak ko, i give him toys to play with while sitting.. or putting my laptop in front of him and play Wall-e, or Cars.. something that he likes.

For start i make him sit only in the morning.. then i realized.. he mostly poo during night before bedtime.. after i give him milk.. so I make him sit na rin during the night.. same instruction.
i also  showed him some kids sitting in potty from you tube.. Until one time.. ayun na.. nag poop  na sya. Until now.. after he poop or pee.. we clap our hands together.. just to let him know it was good job. Last month, when he was still peeing in his pants .. i frown.. etc.. just to make him know it wasn't correct. My son is delayed talker.. word by word pa lang sya. So we made a name for his potty.. We call him "Noo-noooh".. so yun yong keyword nya if he needs to go.

Ang problem ko naman.. he only goes when he really neeeds to go..  parang pinipigal nya :(

TIP: Ipa experience mo sa kanila yung feeling being wet and dirty... sa anak ko kasi he hates the feeling kaya nag sasabi na sya agad if wiwi. ganon din with poop... utot lang pala sabihin nya poop... :)

^^when my daughter started refusing to wear nappy. as in she removes it.

my daughter was semi-potty trained around 20-22 mos old. "semi" bec she wears a nappy when she sleeps and when we got out.

my problem though with my daughter, she holds her pee cause she hates the wet feeling in case there is an "accident". so regularly you'd have to remind her that it's time to pee.

this is extra hard late at night. cause even though she wears a nappy, in the morning it's still dry. she holds her pee even when she's asleep (btw, is that bad?). it's really extra effort for me to wake her up in the middle of the night and deal with a cranky toddler to remind her to pee.

I pretty much followed the potty learning readiness signs.

http://www.babycenter.com/0_potty-training-readiness-checklist_4384.[textspeak!]

hunny_ally, when we started potty learning with my son, we also had to remind him occasionally to pee. Hanggang sa natuto na lang siya to go "I need to pee (or poop)!"

About keeping dry at night, I think it's ok. Their bladders can contain so much more naman na so if they wake up dry, then it should be fine. In our case, our son has to go pee siguro mga twice per night. Sometimes he's cranky but most times, sanay naman na siya sa routine.

BTW, my son wasn't completely potty learned until shortly after he turned 3.

dun sa 1st baby ko di kami nahirapan mag train sa kanya kasi maaga sya pumasok sa school (2.5yrs old) sa school na train sya ng husto then follow up na lang sa bahay.
grabe laking tipid sa diaper he's now 4yrs old at di na sya nagdiaper kapag natutulog. nilalagyan na lang namin sya ng diaper kapag super pagod sya kasi for sure maya't maya yung wiwi nya. kaya yung isang big pack ng diaper nya na XXL aabot yata ng more than 6 mos na stock nya or lagpas pa dun.

My daughter is 18 months old going 19,she can say wee wee and poo poo. sabi ng sitter ko pede na umpisahan at this early,so i bought her a potty chair, yung normal lang walang design or music pero may flushing sounds. At first, she knows na na dun uupo if magwee wee cya, isang beses lang cya nag wee wee doon nung gumamit ng toilet si hubby. Sabi ng sitter ko,huag ko daw i-diaper sa umaga, problem ko is im working nights,so sa umaga minsan antok na ko & wala na ko patience to clean the floor kung mag wee wee sya. ANd besides, everytime we go to the bathroom & sit her sa potty chair uupo lang sya for awhile then pag nakita na nya yung tub sasabihin nya ligo. Mukhang mahihirapan akong mag potty train. :(
