D is easier said kasi kaya nga most babies, ang first word is Daddy instead of Mommy :)

His receptive language seems to be ok naman and he's interacting with his world... but if you're concerned, then consult your pedia...

sis glamorosa_mom
i feel like your son is ok naman. at least he points and knows his surroundings. and base on your description he's a happy kid.
my son is 2 yrs and 9 months, diagnosed with ASD. and his words are the same with your son. mostly d sounds like da-di, dudoo, didi. all babble and still no words. he is speech delayed and goes to therapy.
but still if you're worried then have him checked by his pedia or dev ped to have peace of mind. good luck sis!

hi sis glamorosa_mom, medyo bata pa naman baby mo. but if you are in doubt (see some symptoms below), please do see a developmental pedia. these are common signs kasi on children on the spectrum.  early intervention is always better kasi. i have shared this at SP din. my pamangkin can point but is speech delayed and is undergoing OT and ST because he is suspect for ASD (autism).  he's generally a happy kid din (even before diagnosis).

hi sis latinagirl, how is your son doing? did you go as far as gfcf diet?

let me just share again, dito naman sa GT. he was first checked last july 2010 (2y 10months). these were his noticeable behaviors then:

- do not respond to his name
- would drag you to his request (toy, food etc)
- can't point to objects
- lines up toys/things
- stacks up toys/things
- hyperactive
- loves to run around in circular pattern
- very picky sa food
- babble unknown words
- overly focussed on TV
- parang walang pakialam

note: he was here sana for vacation lang but grand parents insist to make him stay kahit mapaso ang visa niya because of the situation and delay in development.

i really feel for the parents, who are not here. we make it a point that we show the love for the kid. for 3 months of OT sessions with some practice session at home and a LOT of massage therapy na tinuro sa Life, he has made remarkable difference. now (at 3y 1month)  he can:
-  say some words (eat, read, open close, give)
-  identify his name/ looks when called
-  follow certain instructions
-  name all the members of the family (even the dogs)
- loves to point and identify things (huge improvement)
- very seldom na lang mag line ng toys
- now eats more food (pero ayaw talaga ng malagkit)
- identify, point and name all the letters (as in), some colors, common animals
- if want something, he doesn't just point it, he would tell you the action for it. like "open" or "give/borrow"
- loves jollibee LOL, lahat ng sulok na may jollibee, ituturo and will say "jabee" bulol lang) pero we give him 1pc chicken lang. no to french fries anymore
-  can utter 2-words like "read book", "eat fish" and "ayun tito/tita" etc
- not much hyperactive, learned how to wait and ask for one more

although his progress is really a milestone for us and for him, this are the common toddler milestones that he has not shown:
- can not answer yes/no questions
- still no kwento of his experience
- hardly asks for help (more practice pa talaga)

and siyempre we are hopeful na he will engage more words on his sentence/s.

he has started his speech therapy just last week of september. we are very hopeful for more improvement. he still do OT (2xweek).

these are the normal routines that i think had helped him and may help also other moms out there:
- show and name lots of common things, letters, colors, animals
- OT is really a big help. what we do is imitate his lessons (on his notebook) at home.
- strict enforcement of NO when he does something wrong (especially if he push other kids)
- cut down chocolates and soda and other foods with preservatives
- food is more of rice rather than bread. we have also opted for canola oil (I was able to call DAN Phils already and pinipilit namin sundin yung mga suggestion nila, except for the milk)
- sing children songs with him, with action for him to imitate (good choice is if you're happy and you know it, then change the actions, like hug lolo, touch nose etc)
- show and name most body parts
- we cut down his tv time, 1-2hrs a day
- when watching tv, make sure he is not alone. make it interactive
- expose to more people and children

he still have some bulol words and his lyrics are not so perfect but is better. if the word is familiar, tugma naman sa lyrics eh. hehe. we would laugh but correct him when he says "nack" for "X". now its "X". that's in short span lang like 2weeks.

we want to do gfcf but it is difficult kasi nga he is picky eater and milk is a big part of his diet. gluten free most of the time but not totally. we really removed bread kasi it has yeast. i have noticed he has gained words when we removed preservatives/processed food.

i am hopeful that on his next visit (this oct 13), hindi na autism yung makita.  but we can accept whatever it is. in case autism pa rin, we do plan of visiting DAN clinic. i am hopeful that soon, he will be more engaged to conversations.  God bless and kudos to all the moms out there doing the best they can for their children.

Briel is 16 mos old.
It says he shoule be saying 7 real words. Pero lahat babling. He is very talkative. You can identify if he is asking ot telling you something. oo nalang ako. kasi i dont know what he is saying. Lahat parang sentences na puro babling. halo halong dadadada, tatatatata, abujing, etc etc..

Very malikot. Alam naman nya na me pinapupulot ka. He know's na if tinapon nya yun toy and instructed him to get it he gets it naman. He even ran and imitate people's actions. Pati pag me photo pose ginagaya.

He knows bird, me kalapati kasi samin. He knows dog. lahat ng gumagapang na apat ang paa wowowo ang tawag nya even we keep saying dog, meow meow is cat.. he understand what we say.. he knows alika dito, come... We also says hindi maganda yan, or NO..

He knows na galit ako pero minsan he just smiles at me. Pero minsan pag galit ako he knows how to stop.

He knows naman to tell you he is hungry kasi dadalhin ka nya sa ref top get his milk. he also knows na pag gusto nya lumabas hihlain ka nya papunta gate para pabuksan yun. it seems he is normal naman kaso im not sure if ok ba na wait namin na mag utter sya ng real words? I heard him says mama sometimes,
danda sa ganda, bas sa labas. pero hindi frequent. napansin ko lately puro e e e e e lang sya if me gusto sya while hinihila ka nya.

it's been a while since my last post here...

delayed talker kasi ang eldest son ko. though he's ahead in eye-hand coordination, and at par in some learning areas, yung speech talaga ang nahuhuli.

after a year of therapies, and a really good preschool, cont home activities.... i can say ang laki na ng improvement nya. before the therapy, wala syang "daddy,dada,papa"... he can point and he knows naman his papa, pero hindi pa talaga nya masabi. we used to do gestures to communicate.

now at 4.3yro, he can speak 3-4wordsentence. Still delayed (3.4yro) accdg to his recent re evaluation. Pero now, he insists on communication thru words. He sings and dance. He can answer questions and narrate what happened previously.

Because of my Eldest son's case,  binabantayan ko din yung bunso ko. he's now 17months old. he can say more than 15words : mama, dada, daddy, aaahte, aaah, wowo & wowa (this is how they call my dad and mom), babay (bye), bus, buzz, hi, nose, he (head), eeee (ear), aw aaw (dog), g-ny (goodnight), jj (his uncle), ay (eyes), a-me (amen), tra (truck), ish (weewee), mau (mouse)....

My friend's niece-i think 3 or 4 na siya nakapagsalita. We had a neighbor naman, the boy only started talking when he was 4 or 5. Pero yun nga, in both cases, after makapagsalita, super daldal na hehe cute cute ;D

My eldest started uttering clear words when he was almost 4 y/o but it was due to a genetic disorder wherein one of the symptoms is speech and language delay. His therapist thought that my son would be her greatest challenge but after almost 2 months of therapy, his improvement was phenomenal.  Even his pediatrician who constantly monitors his progress is so happy about his speech and language development.  Since then, he talks non-stop.  We always joke nga na his therapist is the one to blame ;)

My youngest who is 17 months old is also a delayed talker.  When she had her well child visit at 15 months, the pediatrician was expecting her to say clear words na.  She asked us if she can hear and follow simple instructions and we said yes.  Her hearing was tested the day she was born and it came out normal but the doctor wants to do it again next month.  Although my child can say papo (apple), dad, pu (push), tee (pee), da (down), jees (Jesus), gi (give), kako (jacket) and a lot more na hindi clear, she might be starting therapy before her 2nd birthday.  We'll see pa kung ano mapag-usapan sa check up nya.  Ang problem kasi sa kanya is she's not as cooperative as my eldest.  She wouldn't want to repeat the words I say.

My son started attending Early Intervention Playgroup and so far did lots of improvement. I can clearly understand him now compared before.

Next year, he will be starting attending the Language Preschool. The only Langugae Preschool in Canberra. They highly recommend my son to attend here. Its a better one than the early intervention unit. The difference is that they really have a langugae teacher and at the same time a speech therapist. Since he will be attending here, they said that my son will no longer need to make follow up for a speech pathologist/therapist as they are the one who comes to their school.

we did the advise of his OT teacher, yung nililingon namin yung face niya when we say his name. lagi din may mention ng name niya before, in almost all sentence. like " ____, please get the towel", "____, do you like this?", " ____, here is your toy". we also used one name lang, then lahat din kame same names naririnig niya para kame din makilala niya. ngayon, hindi na namin masyado ginagawa yung ganun kasi he has learned to respond na to his name. i am quite amazed that now he is asking his playmates verbally on what he wants, like asking his cousin to lie down with him, etc.

i guess my baby's a delayed talker too ...

she talks, pero hindi pa ganon ka-clear yung mga words niya, parang nagba-babble pa sya

clear words pa lang niya are:
____ [name niya]
____ [name ng cousin niya]
papa [papa ko],
mama [mama ko],
ma-yi [mommi, me],
adi [dadi],
harry [name ng dog],
ayun! ayun!  [if she wants something, or kapag may itinuturo siyang gustong kunin mo],
ba-bye!
hi!
halu! [hello, pag kausap sa phone],
bike [her bisikleta]
bird [bird]
sarry [sorry]
chiksi [barbie doll]
dakdak [stuff toy na duck]
shoe [shoes]
elas [tsinelas, slippers]

alam na din niya ituro ang mga family members

alam na niyang ituro ang body parts niya,  ask her kung saan ang ears, eyes, etc., at ituturo niya with a smile.

she knows how to identify her chart, yun lang ask mo siya –– ituturo niya

she understands instructions naman. tamad lang siyang umulit-ulit ng salita/words kapag tinuturuan mo  :D

it doesn't hurt to go pay  developmental pedia a visit. it will be worth it.

@jrfm06, I agree with showermist.  Don't wait until the delay is super obvious na, kawawa naman your son.    Sayang ang time!  Visit a dev ped ASAP.  If he needs intervention, it's really best to start it now.

just wanna share these stories kasi i went home to the province during the holidays and there were kids sa bahay ng pinsan ko. andun din kami kasi dun kami nagspend ng christmas eve sa kanila. my cousin's cousin (sa kabilang side), she was a young mom. siguro she was 19 when she gave birth to her daughter. her daughter was born at 7 months, premature siya pero in normal delivery. at 2.5 years old, she could not speak a word. all she say is witiwitiwitiwitiwitiwitiw... with her high pitched voice. she doesn't say mama, papa, mommy, daddy, or any maayos word. she doesn't even respond when you call her name or tell you to stop moving around, etc.. she's very makulit. hyperactive, has a very good sense of balance. mind you, she can stand in a kiddie monobloc chair and jump! sa kutchon bed where the kids are jumping, yun 4 year old pamangkin ko was already holding to the bed's poster while she was standing sa may dulo pa ng bed without fear!! another pamangkin, at age 1.5 can already ask the question "where is kuya xavi?" in a clear and concise manner. while my 7 month old pamangkin, super madaldal pero syempre yung bulol pa na salita kasi baby pa pero he can call "duh-di!" as daddy. pero yung baby pamangkin ko, when you talk to him, he responds in murmur like also talking pero struggling talaga with  matching facial expressions. ang cute nga eh!

when i talked to my sister about the young girl's case, sabi niya pwede daw autism yun. my sister is a sped teacher pala. i also have one cousin na OT and she said baka daw kelangan ipatingin ang baby. my sister even told me that the young girl's mom once shared to her that she's proud of her daughter kasi magaling daw magstack ng things, mag arrange, etc... that's when my sister almost confirmed that she may have autism kasi characteristic pala ng autism yung mahilig mag arrange ng stuff. my sister would have wanted to tell the mother kaso she's too young pa, and the lola is medyo in denial and maypagka warla itetch. the girl's dad is in states with his parents kasi young parents nga sila. oh well, naawa naman ako sa baby. pero she attended a ballet class, she can follow naman the steps. although at her own pace. tapos when you ask her to do ballet, she'd do a step, then sit, do a step, then sit again, do a step, then sit. ganun siya. i asked her mom bakit ganun, kasi daw sa ballet class niya, naka sit daw sila during breaks.

^hi sis, i have read a lot about autism (since this was the former diagnosis of my pamangkin) and i could say na malaki ang chance na may autism ang bata. i just don't know as to what form, kasi it has several types pa. i can relate to her attitude kasi ganyan na ganyan yung pamangkin ko nung bagong dating. stacking must really be discouraged from her. sana they would accept it and make intervention as early as now para hindi matuloy.

We are so blessed that my pamangkin is out of the spectrum already. in the short span that he is here, he has been talking na and with sense na. his speech is still delayed but not so much na. he is now 3 and his speech is comparable to 2+y/o. next month check up ulit namin. he is still taking OT and Speech classes. madami na din siya 3-word sentences.

^I thought once diagnosed with autism forever na yun, pero nai-improve ang quality of life through therapy.  In your nephew's case, nagamot sya?  Or mis-diagnosed lang with ASD?
