my 2 yrs old and 2 mos lil girl..

madami na syang alam na words, she can even count 1-10.  knows how to sing twinkle twinkle and my toes and my knees.  she knows some spanish words bec of her dora dvd.

she knows every part of her face.  problem is di pa nya kaya ang 3 words na pagsama samahin, laging one word or 2 words lang sya. di nya kaya sabihin na gusto ko kumain, sasabihin nya yun in her own way like eat..yun lang, pag triny nya sabihin ang 3 words namagkakasama, ang labas eh intsik.

I can ask her to pick something or get something for me, she can identify things arround her.  pero yun lang di nya kaya pa pagsasamahin ang mga words na alam nya.wala syang playmate, si dora lang talaga, yun dvd's lang ni dora and barney ang watch lagi, so yung mga salita ni dora ang na aadopt nya, tapos yung gestures ni barney and dora alam din nya.  in our case, malaki ang tulong ng TV sa development ni ava and books lalo na.

will send her sa pre school next year.

My 2 years and 6 months son learned to talk when he was around one year and 3 months. Right now, he can count in 7 languages, talks a little bit of Cambodian, Filipino, and Chinese but his main language is English. He can count up to 100 in English and up to 20 in Japanese.

He has a rich vocabulary and knows all the furniture around the house, complains when it's too hot, knows his colors and shapes, his nursery rhymes (with actions), and can easily memorize the dialogues on Dora and Blues Clues even when he just watched them (this amuse me until now).

He also plays games in my iPhone and can complete 20 puzzle games without a game.

I'm inclined to believe that my son is gifted but then it really depends on how the parents train and communicate with their kids.

That sounds great!  You might want to have your child checked by a developmental pedia to know if he is indeed gifted.

It is somewhat insensitive though to write about your child's rich vocabulary is on the DELAYED TALKER thread.

^I just followed the post before me who seemed to be proud of her kid, and rightfully so. Feel free to move my post to other topics if needed but I think i'm still on topic considering at 1 year and 3 months people around us considered my son a delayed talker when all their kids started blurting out words at 11-12 months. What I'm saying is even if my son started late, he eventually ended up knowing more than the average kid his age.

Your kiddo loves Dora? Mine, too! Most of our DVDs are Doras.

^yes sis, she love's dora.. she say's DOYA not Dora.

isa lang talaga problem ko, hindi pa nya kaya mag construct ng sentence, like mommy i want to eat.  if she wants milk she'll say MIK.

^Lol, mine says DOWA. He has problems pronouncing "R", "L", and "S" -- I think when they turn 3 OK the pronunciation will improve as well.

Hi! Just want to share also my experience with my kids. My 2 and 5 mos. old little boy cannot speak straight too sometimes he's juz babbling. There are words and phrases though he knows how to utter them. Kaso lang medyo bulol pa rin. Dati medyo worried kmi ni Hubby cuz he's already 2yrs old pero di pa talaga nakakapagsalita. Cuz he's older brother(3.5 yrs. old), learned to talk or say a word or two when he was hardly 1 yr old. Sobrang aga din. So I was already tempted to send my 2nd son to speech therapy four months ago. But then my pedia told me as long as he can understand me or somebody talking to him and he has perfect eye coordination, ok [textspeak!] daw un. And I've noticed na rin for the past few months, he's improving. He can say please, get it, put it here, water, etc...clearer na sya magsalita(though some words cannot be understood) so I think he's okay. Sometimes he juz talks too fast too. I'm juz hoping that when he's 3yrs old, straight na sya talaga magtalk. :) Good day everyone!

My son is 2yrs and 2 months now pero monosyllabic pa lang nasasabi niyang words like mama, papa, dada, baba and mam (inom). Medyo nag worry na nga ako yung mga kasabayan niya ang gagaling na mag imitate ng naririnig nila. I know kids learn at their own pace pero minsan nakakasama ng loob when your kid is being compared sa mga cousins niya na same lang ang age. I am thinking to have him checked by a Dev.Pedia para makasiguro. If he wants something, lagi niya lang ituturo yung gusto niya. He wont say anything pero mag make siya ng sound while pointing a certain thing na gusto niya. I have a friend na SPED teacher, she told me na bata pa naman daw baby ko. ma-rerevert pa daw yun, pagtyagaan ko daw kausapin, turuan ng words, ABC's and the like. Gustong gusto niyang binabasahan siya ng stories and watching musical DVD's. Sana nga makapagsalita na siya kasi added burden din yung speech therapy sa family budget.

my youngest seems to be a delayed talker. we already informed her pedia about it. sabi we'll have to wait until she's 18 months before considering test from a D.P.

she's already 16 months old, and she only mumbles, like "mamamama" and "babababa" but that's it.

she can't walk yet, so that's another thing we're worried about. she's making 2-4 steps, but she'd rather crawl. nagkakasugat-sugat na nga yung tuhod nya.

i am really praying na magkaroon ng development yung walking and talking skills niya before siya mag-18 months. sana hindi na umabot sa point that we have to bring her to a D.P.

sabi ko nga i don't wish them to be gifted basta normal lang, hay.

^ Since it's hard to get an appointment with a DP right away, I suggest you set an appointment (it takes months sometimes to get a slot) now rather than wait until your child turns 18 months before you set an appointment.  Sayang ang time if she needs intervention/therapy.

There is nothing wrong in seeking the advice of a DP.  Mas mahirap maghintay ng walang ginagawa about it.

Was your child premature?  Kasi, the developmental delays you have described usually occur when a child has been born prematurely.

I think parents should also be warned not to equate delayed verbal development (which has more to do with physical development of their speaking apparatus, provided they get enough conversation/stimulation naman) with cognitive development (kasi nga for infants up to toddlers, mas important actually ang receptive language nila, because this is indicative of how much, and how well, they can process thoughts)...

Ako kasi, very lenient talaga ang stand ko dito...if babbling or unclear yung words but the child is communicative naman, keri lang...

but if he's actually getting frustrated... yun yung mas kailangan ng tulong...

plus, I advocate baby sign language nga kasi... coz I'm after communication over actual talking :)

she was not premature kaya hindi ko rin malaman kung bakit siya delayed

sabi kasi ng pedia nya bantayan pa namin development nya until 18 months kasi some daw talagang dun pa lang ngstart mag-walk and talk

if ever we need to go to a DP naman, hindi masyadong mahirap i-schedule kasi we have a relative na DP

i'm still optimistic about my daughter, kasi she can make eye contact, mukhang hindi rin naman sya bingi kasi she hears us when we call her, and she likes sounds, very attentive siya sa music and she dances with it

pero sabi rin ng pedia ko, might be daw na she can hear pero rhythm lang or something not the actual words kaya kailangan pa rin daw imonitor

she tends to play on her own din, ayaw nya kalaro yun ate nya
she ignores me when she's busy playing
ewan ko lang if that's an issue, pwede kasing ayaw lang nya siguro nadidistract kapag nag-eenjoy sya

^ For me, para mapanatag ka, I urge you to have your daughter assessed by a dev ped asap.  Why wait two months?  Wala namang mawawala kung ipa-assess mo na siya now.  If okay lang pala, no harm done.  Panatag na ang loob mo. :)

Personally, hindi ako makakatulog kasi kung hindi ko naririnig from an expert na okay lang at wala akong dapat ipagtaka or ikabahala.  That's why as early as 11 months, nag-consult na ko sa dev ped for my children, who were born premature. :)

Even now that I am confident that they are developmentally at par with their peers, I still take them for developmental check-ups twice a year.  Aside from assurance kasi that they're hitting the milestones for their age, I also want to discuss with the dev ped how to enhance their development - what I and my husband, as parents, can do to provide an enriching home life and environment for our sons.  :)

i'm not sure if my daughter is a delayed talker. kaka-1 year old lang nya last june 27 and may nasasabi siyang words like mama, dada, choos (for shoes), bat (for bath), and to (for tito). thing is, parang di pa niya nare-recognize yung name niya. pag tinatawag namin siya by her name matagal bago siya lumingon. pero pag may tugtog and may nakikita siyang sumasayaw, kekembot din siya.

another thing, di pa siya nakaka-follow ng simple instructions. tinuturuan ko siya with flash cards and shape sorters pero parang di siya maka-follow. should i be worried? or hintay pa ako ng konti? what do you think?

Thanks sis for the advice.

I already told my mom to get in touch with her cousin na DP para madali na lang magpaschedule.

Pero I'm gonna go with my pedia, who is my tita din by the way, to wait for 2 months more.

Yes, I am worried, but optimistic pa rin talaga ako.

Every independent step she makes is so overwhelming for me, nakikita ko na may effort naman sya. I'll give her a chance.

Naka focus ako talaga ngayon sa talking nya, I'm constantly giving her tongue and lips exercises, and minomonitor ko din yun attentiveness nya.

I have two months more to give it a try. Pa-advice na lang kung ano pa pwde ko gawin as a mom on those 2 months para ma-improve sya kahit konti.

^ First, limit her tv watching time.
Always talk to her in short but complete sentences.
Do not anticipate her needs or interpret what she is trying to say.  Encourage her to say it.
Talk to her about even the most mundane things.  I used to point to objects and identify them to my kids, like "This is a ball", "That is an apple" and tell them what I'm doing " Mommy is going to take a shower",  "Mommy is eating a banana", etc.
I showed them flash cards and picture books so that they can be familiar with pictures of common objects.
I read books to them.
Everyone in the house were encouraged to speak to my children.  Even the maids - if they prefer to speak to my kids in Tagalog, I let them be. Better that way rather than walang kakausap sa mga bata- my husband and I work full time kasi kaya kasama ng mga kids ko ang maids most of the time.  Also, young kids absorb language like a sponge and the best time to learn two, three languages is between 0-5 years old, according to our dev ped.  Pero, may ibang take ang ibang mommies about this ha.
Good luck and update us.

^ Sabi nga rin ng pedia ko na maybe because most of the time kalaro niya si ate nya at yun ang laging kausap who is bulol pa kaya hindi siya matuto.
My mom who is with her the whole day is a "facebook addict" kaya lately hinahayaan lang maglaro mag-isa yun baby ko.

Me and my husband din works full time and the past few months kung kelan nasa development stage talaga yung bunso ko dun pa super dami kong trabaho kaya it's partly my fault, si hubby yun other part, hays.
It's true noh? The parents are really the one to blame.

I'll do your advice sis, less TV time and more talk time na talaga.
Thanks a lot. Keep it coming mga sisses, I have to really focus on her this time eh!

ask ko lang po sa inyo.. do you also teach or converse in Tagalog with your children? Or you all exclusively prefer everyone to speak to them in English?

^^you might also want to consider enrolling your kid in a toddler school.. some schools accept toddlers as young as 1.5 yrs old. that way she gets to socialize with other kids too and the teacher will guide her every step naman. kaya yung time na nasa work kayo, she spends her time naman at school so that means less time with yaya.

i enrolled my son din kase 2 mos ago. he's already 2 years old and he's also delayed in speech (he's a preemie kase). i also had him checked by a dev ped when he was 15 mos old. normal naman lahat except may mild delay nga sa speech. my pedia said to enroll him muna sa school then pag wala pang developments we should consider speech therapy na daw. though we (the teacher and i) can see some developments na naman like he plays na with other kids, he has become more independent, he can focus longer na when he's doing an artwork like painting and drawing, and he's starting to utter some words na especially the alphabet, numbers and some of his toys. we've also noticed that he likes to write... just doodles lang naman but he likes to hold a pen or crayon and draw lines on the paper. he enjoys school a lot. downside lang is naging mas layas anak ko and nahahawa kagad whenever a schoolmate is sick.  :P
