Interesting.. i agree. Tv is also a great educator and entertainer.
But like any other it has it's own advantages and disadvantages.

marami factors yung delayed talking abilities ng kids one is pwedeng sa bahay niyo iba iba ang salita ng tao like lets say the parents are training the kids to speak in english and they talk to the kids in english pag wala naman ang parents sina yaya bisaya ang salita and the other people around tagalog. on the other hand huwag lang paabutin ng 4years old tapos hindi parin makapagsalita yung bata kasi can be a sign of autism na yun

ang alam ko kasi, a child at age two should know 200 words... not sure if he should be able to say them properly na...

and though I would encourage parents to seek help if their pedia calls their attention... and to foster a lot of one-on-one conversations with each child... lagi ko rin naiisip kasi na Einstein didn't talk till he was 4 :)  I mean, it's good to be concerned but good to be pressured or panicky... and there are other areas of development you can look into...

Sis, I posted a guideline given to me by the developmental pedia in the previous pages.  Kindly check.

do u know someone na delayed talkers lang talaga? i mean without intervention ng speech theraphy pero nagsalita din sila in a certain age?....tenks

my younger sister is a delayed talker. I think almost 3 na cya na marunong magtalk but when she talk, it was a straight sentence and with no babytalk as in. My parents was amaze, doctor said she might just observe us those times she didn't talk. It's her personality now, she's a great observer. You could say reserve cya but when she does things or say stuff, always to the point.

So I don't think you should worry about it much. Basta wag lang, like our sises her says, patagalin until he/she is 4.

factor din ba ang pagiging premature ng baby kaya delayed talker? i gave birth on my 32nd week..  son ko kasi 19months old ngayon.. he can only say a few words na malinaw.. 1-word lang.. yung anak ng officemate ko 2 months older sa son ko pero sharp na nasasabi and 2-word sentences na sya..

my son's enrolled in school ngayon.. sa school english sila.. sa bahay namin ginagawa ko din yung tagalog and english..

^ Pia, prematurity is a factor.  So to gauge your son's speech development, you have to work back 2 months.  But you can only work back until Kyle turns 2.  By 2 years old kasi, he is supposed to catch up na with his peers.

I suggest you bring him to a dev ped for evaluation.  If there's intervention needed, the earlier you know, the better so you can do something about it agad.

If it's any consolation, my sons who were born at 29 weeks, started speaking in 2-3 word sentences when they were around 2.5 years old.  I wasn't worried much because the dev ped evaluated them (they go to a dev ped for developmental check-ups twice a year) just before they turned 2 and said that their receptive language is strong.  It's just the expressive language that was slightly delayed.  During their last check-up (March of this year), the dev ped said they are developmentally at par with their peers and even slightly advanced in some areas of their development.  So panatag ako.  For me, mas panatag talaga kapag pina-pa-assess sa professional.  Hindi yung hula-hula or sabi-sabi lang ng mga elders. :)

Hi Yapeegurl! My son was not premmie baby but he was only speaking 4 clear words when he turned 18 months. His words sky-rocketed since then especially when he attended Family Daycare and can now say 4-5 word sentences at 29 months. We also speak to him in 2 languages so there was a bit of delay. But if he turns 24 months and you are still worried, it is best to consult a specialist.

Thanks marose and lalei. I'm still trying to figure out how I can get my son assessed by a dev ped here in sg. It has to be recommended by your pedia. Last week I consulted kyle's pedia who advised that there is no need to go thru development assessment. Pero ako gusto ko talaga lumapit na para talaga may peace of mind ako and also to gauge my son's skills. Para Kung meron kailangan idevelop pa na skill, magawan agad paraan. Nagsesearch pa Lang ako pano ko gagawin yun without the pedia's recommendation. Kailangan daw kasi meron referral from the pedia. Sana may mahanap akong dev ped na walang referral requirement.

Kaya for the meantime, nangangapa ako Kung pano ko gauge skills ni Kyle. I am trying to avoid the idea of comparing him with his peers kasi iba iba naman sila. Meron sila individuality. and preemie nga si Kyle. So dev ped ang answer talaga.

We're now trying to avoid tv time. Baka factor nga din.

^sis, too early to tell at your sons age if theres developmental delays.  even running assessment may not be reliable at this time cause it's still in the developmental milestone of the child.  try to research and read first.  then stimulate your son by constantly talking, labelling/naming the things around, and reading books and stories.  also, do this in one language only.  if after 24 months there are no improvements, then lay down your cards to the pedia again.

babies develop differently.

check out sites like american academy of pediatrics.

Pia, wag ka muna magworry masyado. Masyado pa nga bata si baby para patingnan mo na.

Alam mo si Janea, mga 3 yrs old na bago talaga siya nagsalita ng maayos. As in mga 2 yrs old siya, zero word talaga kundi dede.

Wait mo muna, baka makatulong din yung pag-enroll mo sa kanya sa school. As long as nagrespond naman siya, natuturuan (where's the dog, where's color red, play ng shape sorter at marunong maglaro ng ibang toys, mga ganyang sample) there's nothing to
worry pa for now. :)

Dati din super worried ako, naka-sked na nga ako sa devped (nasa pinas pa kami by that time) pero nung napunta kami dito eventually nagsalita din.

^ What you can do in the meantime is to check whether Kyle's receptive language is good.  To do this, use flash cards, picture books and common objects, ask him, where's the ball, where's the dog, where's the cup, etc.  If he responds correctly, that's good.  It means that his expressive language is still developing.

Limit tv watching - wala kasing interaction iyan, basta if you ask me, 2 hours of tv daily is more than enough for a child; Marty and Milo were exposed to the tv only after they turned 2 years old.

Talk to him about anything and everything.  Try to elicit a response when you talk to him.  Do not anticipate what he needs so that he will be encouraged to ask for it verbally.

My dev ped does not believe that speaking in 2 or more languages contributes to speech delay.  I believe her since at home, we're bilingual.  The helpers speak to my sons in Tagalog (which I prefer kesa palpak na English or hindi na lang kausapin kasi intimidating for helpers to speak in English only) and my husband and I speak to them In English.  Walang problema sa comprehension nila.

^marose, natawa naman ako na baluktot na english, tagalog na lang.  but true,m kesa ganyan din ang point ko.  the thing is my son is so into speaking in tagalog now, and enjoying it too.

i agree with TV watching and more stimulation coming from the primary caregivers - the mom or dad!

Actually yung idea na Tagalog si yaya Kay Kyle nakuha ko dito sa gt.  ;D Kaya super thanks. Kasi meron 'p' and 'f' and b/v problem ang yaya. Since then sabi ko mag Tagalog na Lang since English naman sa school.

Marose, nakakaiyak pag nasasagot ni Kyle yung 'what's this questions'. Parts of his face alam na din.  :P I will strictly enforce that tv rule.

^ Ay, so okay naman pala ang receptive language development ni Kyle.  He just needs to be encouraged para ma-verbalize niya ang thoughts niya.  Basta, daldalin niyo lang siya. :)
