My son also loves his DVDs: Cars, Bob the Builder, Wiggles, Jayjay the Jet Place, Roary the racing car, and Barney. He did pick up some words from them though like hug and vroom vroom. What's important too is if you can watch them with your kids so you can discuss what are shown. Watching TV though should not be for long hours kasi masama din naman yon. In moderation lang.

I also slowly speak some words (sometimes I emphasize on the letter sounds) to my son for him to clearly hear and pick it up. Nawawala kasi ang letter H nya.

[textspeak!] mga mahahaba na words katulad ng butterfly/paru-paru he won't say it. But, I still repeat it several times para ma-pick up rin nya eventually.

Continue talking lang and be creative in encouraging your kids to speak. So far my son's speech development is improving on a day to day basis.

Yung anak ko din, delayed talked.. when she was 2.5 years old, sobrang konting words lang talaga ang nasasabi niya. As in at 2.5, dun pa lang niya yata ako natawag na mommy..

Sobrang worried ko din that time, akala ko something's wrong with her.

Nung dinala ko sya dito sa singapore at may nakalarong mga bata, that's when she started talking.. then before 3 yo super daldal na talaga. :D

You just have to believe in your child capabilities, malalaman niyo naman yan if may problem sa development niya.

hi mommies! im new here..I would just like to share mt experience with my eldest son. Nung 2 yrs old cia we noticed that di cia maciadong nagsasalita. All he can say are: mommy, bye, papa. [textspeak!] water nya, ang tawag nya HE!Some says that delay lang talaga pag boys tyka daw maaga daw kc nag lakad. Also sabi nila wala [textspeak!] kalaro na mga bata coz only child palang and madalas sa haus lang kami. My hubby was worried na so nung 2.5 yrs old cia, we brought him to a dev pedia sa manila kc we are from subic pa and walang available dito, we are reffered sa Asian hospital. He was assesed and found out that he's 6mos. delayed sa speech. And was advised to attend occupational theraphy every week and speech teraphy every month. So ma tyaga namin ciang bina byahe from subic to manila... After 3mos. we can see some improvement, and then when he was 2.7y.o na, i enrolled him sa montessori school near our house, and he was admitted to toddler casa. It was sort of trial lang baka kc saka sakali pag may nkaka halubilo cia na kids, eventually mas madali makapag salita. And i was right coz when he started going to school, tlagang ang laki ng improvement. Since then we stopped his theraphy. And from then slowly naging ok na cia. When he reached 4y.o super talkative na cia... Now he's already 8yrs old. So i think it would really help if nakaka pag socialize with other kids ang mga kiddos natin... :)

I second the motion on socialization. Nag-sky rocket din ang words ng anak ko when he went to family care 3 months ago. He was forced to speak and become exposed to more words when he is with other kids.

I also read somewhere na nakakabagal ng speech ang bi-lingual at multi-lingual kaya no need to be afraid kung hindi agad magsalita si baby. Pero good time din talaga to introduce different languages at an early age since they are like sponges.

We speak to our son in Tagalog and English, but mostly Tagalog for him to learn to speak our language. His carers speak to him in English but we gave them a list of Tagalog words and the translation for reference.

My son just turned 2 last Feb1.  He was confined at the hospital that time due to diarrhea.  The attending pedia was his first pedia though only for a month cause we switched pedia afterwards.  During her room visits, she asked if my son can already talk, walk, run.  I said he can run already but can say only a few words, sometimes mama, papa, dede, vee for TV, bo for ball, but not really that often (though he babbles, screams, laugh).  She then called my son's name.  I said he is more familiar with his nickname.  She then asked my son to point where his papa is.  My son shyly pointed his papa.  I then asked my son to point his eyes, nose and where Matthew is, and he readily pointed those.  The pedia said it's his speech that is delayed and speech therapy would help improving it.  We have an appointment with her tomorrow though I am not 100% sure that I want my son to undergo therapy at this time.  I mean he just turned two.  I would be very alarmed if he is nearing 3 and still with little words to say.  I actually brought up that concern to his current pedia, about two months before he turned 2.  I asked if he needs to undergo therapy cause medyo delayed na nga yung speech.  She said not to worry much since there are really delayed talkers.  She even said that she herself planned on letting her son evaluated by a dev pedia because the speech is delayed, but then when her son was almost 3, he learned to talk and is now very talkative.

I would much welcome the idea of first enrolling him in a play school so he can be with other kids and perhaps learn to speak clearly and learn new words.  I am not sure din if he is confused kasi nga as much as possible we try to talk to him in English but then of course with the yaya and the kids na kalaro nya minsan dito tagalog talaga salita.  Like when the yaya asked the playmate to ask my son how old he is, tinanong sya ng tagalog, ignore niya lang, but when the yaya asked in English, yung son ko showed his 3 fingers, hehe, di niya kaya yung 2 lang e. Anyways, yun, share ko lang.  Sana lang din my son will learn to clearly speak soon.  Like when he turned 1, di pa siya ganun kagaling maglakad, sa crib lang afraid pa.  Then after siguro a month na talagang todo practice namin siya, bilis agad lumakad at tumatalon talon pa, and soon after tumatakbo na.  Sana lang, he's just a little delayed pero I'm hoping na wag na muna kami umabot sa pagte-therapy.   Sorry, haba ata.

^ Speech therapy is early intervention for delayed speech.  It would actually help your son to catch up on this important milestone. :)

Thanks sis.  Sad lang ako that he has to undergo this pero if the pedia says so tomorrow, she knows better, I think that's the best option.  Nothing to lose naman but a lot to gain diba :)  Yun nga lang, costly ata to undergo speech therapy.  Sana kaya namin nihubby :)

^ It's costly nga and it's quite difficult to get a slot sa mga speech therapists kasi most of the time, puno na ang sked nila.

One of the things that the dev ped will ask is the amount of time  your son spends watching tv - in most cases kasi of speech delay, ito ang culprit.  That's why I limit my children's screen time to no more than 2 hours a day (1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon).  And I also did not let them watch tv until they turned 2 years old.  Naka-help talaga!  They're now 2 years, 7 months old and they can speak in 4-5 word sentences in English and Tagalog without difficulty.

Best of luck, sis kitty07!  Balitaan mo kami dito ha. :)

my son is 3 years old and 7 months. he talks and all. but according to the teachers in his school and to  my mom na he is somewhat delayed sa pagsasalita. they are always expectin him to answer promptly when asked somethin. we were even told to consult a dev ped and to put him in speech therapy.
For me, i think the way he talks lang is not that conversational pa. May problem nga kaya?

^ Since several people have noticed and commented that your child may be delayed, for your peace of mind, it's best to see a specialist.  This, I think, is the wiser choice than waiting for very concrete and severe signs of delay, in which case, the problem may be bigger than you have expected.  The earlier you see a specialist, the better.

share ko lang just to give update for my son. he just started attending early intervention playgroup last monday (once a week lang pasok nia) then the ff day i saw a free playgroup few walk lang away from our home (we're based here in Australia) when he was playing, gulat ako nung sabi nia "stah" for star (pointing the playdoh he's playing there) then suddenly he can say "shoes",  "chesme" (for excuse me), "eat", "hafah " (for hi-5), "ate" when he calls her big sister. But the most thing that really made me happy is when he calls me "mama" showing a toy that he is holding. Though once nialang isnabi and di na naulit, it relieves me kahit papano. I hope mas magimprove pa talaga sya. Tyagaan lang. Lhat naman parents esp mommies will do eveything for the sake of our kids.

Share ko lang yung story ko about my daughter pero I certainly do not suggest anything ha, kwentuhan lang..

I was hoping that her stomach wont get upset after eating that thing.

^ funny :)

darna88, tama. agree with you.

minsan kasi us parents we tend to compare our child sa ibang bata their age at kung may naiba lang ng konti feeling naten delayed na baby naten pero talaga hindi.

minsan ayaw nya lang mag salita or dina digest nya pa ang mga tinuturo naten after a couple of days maririnig mo na lang sasabihin nya.

my daughter is not a delayed talker but i like lurking this thread. meron nga ako friend going 4 na anak nya, Ati lang alam sabihin. lahat uh uh uh na lang. :) di naman naalarm ang mom nya.

sis, mukhang madaldal kid mo ha.. my son is 3.5yro and nasa 2-3word sentence kami. i suggest to see a dev pedia first and see from there if needed ang intervention and if ever in what area.

marose, thanks for the info! para tuloy lalo ako interesado mag pa eval kay dev pedia mo...

remember, with any kind of intervention in any therapy centers, malaking factor ang follow ups ng famiily (not only mom or yaya or dad) sa kid at home. better din kung willing ang play/preschool nya to adjust with your kid's way of learning and speech.  ako gustong gusto ko kasama ako during therapy ng anak ko, impt sakin yung discussion ko with his therapist after each session para ma follow up namin sa bahay and sa school.

Hi ladies!

Since I was worried, 6 months ago of my son's speech. I asked our GP for a referral for the hearing test. Yes, it took 6 months for them to give us an appointment, which I think is no longer needed since my son started speaking more and more words. The assistant who called me insisted since it will take another 6 months if we ask for another appointment in the future. So, I gave in and brought my son yesterday for a hearing test. Okay naman and he enjoyed the test.

Hearing problem may also be one factor hindering your kid's speech development. Baka may fluids or ear infection preventing them from capturing the words.  You may want to check this too.
