Teaching as career

I've been a teacher for 13 years and I would say that I enjoyed the first five years of it. It's true na this is a noble profession, you keep on learning each day, you earn respect without asking for it, kaya lang one day I woke up and realized that I got too tired of it. I went abroad, found a nice job (thanks to my teaching background) and get a salary 7X better than i used to get as a teacher.

Though Im no longer in the teaching profession, my present and future were built on it. No regrets.

sis, anong work mo ngayon? i am a preschool teacher abroad and im earning good but im not happy with my job anymore. im planning to shift careers kaya naghahanap ng options.

^^I worked as a proofreader in a newspaper company. They considered my background in campus journalism (I've been a school paper adviser). I never thought na this could help me in making a career move.

I had attended lots of national trainings and  conferences provided by private groups, and they really helped a lot. Kaya kung merong ganung opportunities to attend trainings, go! Who knows, they would take you somewhere farther.

depende sa university sis.  college ba gusto mo?

mga iba iaappointment ka na magdemo.  i rereview muna application mo bago ka isched sa demo.  and isa sa alam kong qualifications nila ay dapat may MS units ka na, depende pa rin sa college/univ kung ilang min MS units.

pero nung apply ako for HS teacher, after ng initial interview pinag demo na ko.  all on the same day.

May questions po ako sa mga nag-aral sa PNU or to those na may idea.   

1. I just completed my 18 CTP units in PNU. So for me to get a certificate, I have to complete my practicum. Kung ganon, pag sa PNU ba kahit saang school ako pwede magpracticum? If yes, OK lang kaya kung private or public school dapat?

2. May required number of hours ba para sa practicum?

3. Kelan kayo nagmemeet sa school (PNU)?

4. Paano ang schedule niyo sa pinagpapracticuman niyo?

5. Nag-aral kasi ako sa province kaya hindi ko alam ang school time dito sa Metro Manila. Kasi may narinig akong teacher, sa school daw nila sa Pasay, 6AM-12PM. Ganon ba sa lahat ng public schools dito sa Metro Manila?

6. Sa mga nagreview sa PNU, kelan ang review sked niyo nung nagreview kayo for April LET?

The reason why I'm asking these questions is because I'm currently working so kelangan kong malaman kung paano ko rin maaayos yung sked ko sa work.

1. mey 2 kinds of practicum.
PRACTICUM A: if you don't have experience (i can't remember kung yung required experience is a year or two).....you have to teach. sa PNU yun mismo for 1 full sem.di pede sa ibang school. shempre, ang pasok ng mga bata m-f. so you're gonna have to take a loooong leave from work.
PRACTICUM B: if you do have experience, pede mo siya itake during summer. sat classes lang yun. bale all you have to do is sit in and observe your mentor.

****suggestion: if you can't afford to take a long leave for practicum A, you can opt to delay taking the practicum. ang ginagawa ng iba, kuha muna ng working experience sa ibang school. then go back to PNU to take practicum B. this is what i'm doing.

2. i'm not sure about the hours eh. bast afor practicum A, 1 full sem. practicum B, pedeng makuha yun ng isang summer lang.



6. you mean the day?? My review ran from May until 1st week ata or 2nd week of July. Sat classes lang yun. Then kapag majorship na, nagchange to Sunday. Whole day yun bale, from 8am till 5pm.

I have no teaching experience so I have to take Practicum A. And also thanks for the tip about getting teaching experience first to take practicum B. Kaso nagiging wary na kasi ako sa mga bali-balita regarding the changes like for CTP, magiging 30 units na. Naswertehan ko lang at naabutan ko pa yung 18 units. Natatakot ako kasi na if ever madelay ko pa yung practicum, baka yun pa yung maging dahilan ng kung anong aberya.

anyway....ang CTP kasi sa pnu (yung orig) ..including the practicum is really more than 18 units. kya i was able to put the practicum on hold, take the let...get some experience before i go back to PNU for the practicum

if you want to make sure,
1. double check with PRC what is the new required number of units to take let
2. compute the number of units you have left and how fast you can take them...usually naman 9 units per sem (3 subjects)
3. kung kukulangin at kelangan mo kunin yung practicum, then brace yourself and prepare an impressive speech to your office about your looooooong looooooong loooooong leave
4. kung kering keri naman...you could go ahead and do my suggestion

Ang dami naman dito gusto mag shift from teaching job to different career...

just to ask..
I have bachelor degree in business admin major in computer application, with 10 years programming experience.  I wanted to shift my career to become computer teacher or professor.. how do i do that? I also took a TEFL course to be able to teach english.. as part time. will I be qualified to teach computer subject in university/college?

wow...ive been a gt member since 2005 pero ngayon ko lang na browse ang thread na to...

i am a teacher too...elem and hs(math subjects only)...although i am a licensed engineer, ito ang naging path ko...

not because this is my calling...it is a family business..my parents own a school...

and though i really wanted to use what i learned from college, since a lot of telecom companies offered me a job after board exams, i decided to help my parents for a while....

akala ko nga for a while lang...i told them i would only teach for a year because i cant imagine myself being a teacher forever...but after 4 years, I still am a teacher...

why? super noble nung profession...sobrang hard...but super fullfiling...kaya ito...kahit na may job offers parin from my field...di nako nakaalis...

mahirap maging teacher, i agree...Teaching is a Passion...hindi biro...dahil kung hindi mo talaga calling to...kahit anong mangyari,bibigay at bibigay ka...buti nalang...minahal ko na ang job ko...

may nag offer nga sakin mag college prof sa Lasalle and STI...natakot lang ako... kasi syempre engineering students puro boys...baka di ko mahandle ng maayos...and sabi ng boyfie ko,mukha daw akong bata to be a college prof baka ligawan lang ako.. pero gusto ko ding i-try...

now, im planning to take up CTP in La Salle or PNU...san ba ok? dun kasi ako malapit..i want to take up CTP sana in UP pero its very far from me....

^Both maganda naman po ang offer ng DLSU and PNU ( I have taken some units from DLSU during my undergrad years and continued sa PNU kasi I was already workinh, malaking difference ang tuition  )

If you are only available during Saturdays, i recommend you to go to PNU

I just finished my Bachelor in Secondary Education degree in English.

Although I'm not a HS teacher, I still teach English online at night as my part-time job. I alsol plan to take the LET next April and I hope to pursue my MA in 2010.

teaching was my first job.  Only for 1 sem though teaching thermo 1.  Am a liscenced Mech Eng.  If I didnt take that first job, I wouldnt have been recommended for my 2nd job which is a Multinational Firm. 

Being a part of the brotherhood in the faculty of Engineers is a plus !

nasa Vietnam ako mga sis. i'm teaching ESL. i don't earn that much but then again i've only been here for a month and i don't have a certificate. AB communication graduate ako, pero 3 units lang teaching strategies ko. they accepted me without any certificate/diploma.

ngayon ko ang na-visit ulit ang thread na to...sige sis pagnapunta ka dito sa hcmc, ipapakilala kita...yong isang friend ko naman she's working sa isang university ang working hours niya mon-sat 730am to 320pm 1subject lang yon, 3 different classes and everyday iba-iba ang students niya so hindi daw siya nagsasawa. and her monthly income from the university is nasa USD 3,000. may nagpapa-private tutor pa sa kanya na group, staffs ng hotel every saturday naman starting at 530pm, 2 to 3 hours daw yon so nadadagdagan pa ang USD 3k niya na kita niya from the university. nakaka-inspire di ba? yong earning USD 3,500 naman na isang friend ko she's teaching in more than 1 universities and medyo mas nakakapagod yong sa kanya kase byahe plus kalat daw sched minsan.   

madami akong friends dito na teachers kase nga most of the pinoys here are teachers ang work nila.

naninibago ako now na ang daming mga students na nagpapatutor after school hours. during our time, iilan lang mga may tutor... pero ngayon, grabe, halos buong class ng mga pamangkin ko ang may tutor. most of the tutors around the school area ay mga teachers mismo ng school rin! makes me think iba na mga teachers ngayon compared to before. hindi na ganun ka-passionate sa kanilang job maybe? basta naturo na nila ang dapat nila maturo, hindi na baleng hindi naiintindihan ng mga students. total naman may tutor afterwards. im not generalizing ha, but this is simply an observation.
