share your experience......on blended family
« on: September 05, 2017, 03:23:37 pm »

i'm a single mom with a 12yr. old son and currently with a guy who has a 6yr. old son. i'm 38 and his 47.  this is my first relationship with a guy who already has a kid. our relationship is fairly new 5months pa lang but it is getting pretty serious.

i tried many times to break up with him just to see how much he wants me since we both have a kid na nga and i think this will be very challenging for both of us if ever we end up together. but no matter what i do and kahit anong pangit ang ipakita ko sa kanya he is still there. our relationship just becomes stronger after every fight kasi tingin niya nasa adjustment period pa kame.

regarding sa kids namin, i've met his kid and bonded with him pretty well i even met the mom of his son. sinasama niya ko pag i-drop off yung bata sa house ng mom. he has yet to meet my son. but he mentioned na isama ko yung son when we go out. i just told him one of these days i will.

anybody in this kind of setup? what are your ups and downs? i don't know anyone na ganito so i'm really curious. thanks in advance sa mga mag share ng inputs. :D

Sa pinas ba ito or abroad?
Just asking because I think if pinas, it can get complicated because of extended family ties.

I have 2 kids. My current partner divorced with 3 kids. All grown up na, youngest now is 14yo.
In our case, malalaki na mga bata and my kids stay with me while his kids stay with the mom.

For now we have decided to stay together. No marriage plans for me because feeling ko it won't be fair to my kids if I prioritise another man in my life considering they are still in school (late teens). Siguro marriage will eventually come once our kids are independent adults na.

Ups and downs - it is a nice feeling to go out altogether during Christmas and New year. Masaya kasi marami kami and kids blend well at magsing age sila. Kids are well behaved at wala kaming problem sa away, so far.

Downs for me minsan there's this part of me that still wants to keep my distance from his kids, simply because they still have a mom and I'm not there to replace their mom. So minsan if we are out, pag may nagtanong kung ano ako nung bata, sasabihin ko friend. Totoo naman di ba.
Pero knowing me, sometimes inevitably I want to treat them like my family (not necessarily kids) - but like my Niece/Nephew or kapatid. But I do feel some disappointment at times but I brush them aside. I always think that these Kids have gone through a lot by witnessing their parents separation, so somehow I think we should be careful and be more understanding. Tsaka worse,  their dad is with me, not with them. Kaya I always have a soft spot for them.

Then sometimes there's no one clear cut rule din when it comes to money matters. Maraming gray areas that u can encounter.

Like for example, Since we are not married but staying together. Inevitably since I have 2 and he has 3, and we earn almost the same, Mas may savings ako. So minsan (but not all the time), I spend more din but kapalit naman nun is the joy being with them so okay lang. in trips also, or when we go out. During occasions on gift giving and birthday celebrations.

For me ito Yung medyo touchy subject - financial. Especially if you decide to get married and stay in the same house. Who spends for what. Or halo na tutal same naman kayo 1 kid each? 😊

Sorry ito mahaba kwento, just to give you one gray area I encountered.
When my partner bought a car, I shouldered 20%. But I never claimed the car is mine since ayoko magdrive. Isip ko naman kasi hinahatid din naman nya ako minsan. But when he bought the car, we were not yet living together. Kaya at that time, he said he wants to pay me back. Sabi ko naman anytime coz I have extra naman.

Then a couple of years later, when we were staying together na, his first son 22yo wants to buy a car kasi his work shift is too early - 630am, takes him 1 hour to commute. Pero pag drive 20min lang. so my partner helped in the downpayment of the car, then monthly his son and the mother share the loan amortization. Kung baga labas nako doon, I just know that they wanted to buy but I'm not part of the decision making. but then sometimes iniisip ko why he had money for downpayment ng iba na parang he used my money for the downpayment for his son's car, of which the mom and other kids use din.  Samantalang me and my 2 kids, we don't have a car and we take the train/bus most of the time.
So sometimes I think if it is fair to my 2 kids.

There are others pa, but bottom line, Feeling ko dapat clear expectations nyo para minimised ang issues, especially when it comes to money.

Another topic is - disciplining kids. Sa inyo siguro, since bata pa kids nyo, you need to also talk about your situation and how to deal with disciplining and rearing them. Samin kasi, when we see something wrong sa anak nung Isa, we don't go direct to the kid. He tells me what's wrong to my kids and I tell him what's wrong with his kids and we deal with our respective kids on our own. Hanggang dito na muna otherwise baka humaba pa lalo :D

^hi sis. Thanks for your input. May i know what's your age gap?

We are here sa pinas. So far money is not going to be an issue kasi malaki naman ang income namin both. Nasa 6digits kame pareho. He gets a new car every 4 years care of his office. Around 2M ang budget ng office niya for his car.

Ang issue ko with him is time. Madami nga kame money wala naman kame time. Pag weekend nasa kanya yung bata and he is very hands on with his son, yun lang din yung time namin to date so ang ending lagi namin kasama yung bata. Ako i have my son pag weekdays kasi may school. Pag weekend free nako kasi kinukuha siya ng mom ko, only apo kasi. Wala kame solo date bihirang bihira lang.

We are now together for 6months, adjustment period pa lang but he has expressed na gusto na niya mag asawa and magka anak ulit. We haven't had a serious talk about it kasi too early pa naman.

How long kayo together before you decide to live together? Did it come naturally or you had to discuss it or something? I was thinking maybe by end of the year we talk about our plans para clear yung expectations and to know if we are heading in the same direction.

Kasi when we met, nagkataon na Hindi Kami ganun ka busy sa work. We had time to go on dates and get to know each other.

Weekdays usually dates namin, kasi weekends nya with kids since they don't stay together.

Then when I bought my place, malalaki narin kids ko, I gave up my helper. My work was hectic with 70 hours/week, while studying and no maid. Given my schedule, it would be impossible for us to see each other often.

We were already seeing each other for almost 5 years when we decided to stay together. He has met my kids, parents and siblings narin and vice versa. Friends and colleagues din.

Staying together for us is just our next step. And we don't think we are ready to get married kasi priorities ko parin kids ko and the same with him.

In mature relationships, usually wala naman sa haba ng time nyo together. If it feels right, and kilala nyo na talaga ang isa't Isa, sure kayo na both would look after each other' welfare and each other's kids din, baka iyan nanga next step nyo to get married. On financial matters naman, feeling ko it is not about having the money or not, but it is about being fair. Yung na earn mo before til now, may share din ba ang magiging step son mo? Siguro easier sa inyo kasi one is to one kayo hehe Samin kasi he has 3 while ako 2. I maintain our household kasi he maintains 2 (where his mom stays and his kids/alimony). So finances play a big part in blended marriage, IMHO.

I don't considered myself in a blended family pero single mom ako with 1 kid when i married my husband who was single and no kids then. Ngayon dalawa na anak namin. Yung panganay ko nuon at yung anak namin ni hubby ngayon.

In our setup kasi that we are now married, we always practice the word "WE" in all aspects of our lives. May it be regards to our children, decisions and money matters. we removed "anak mo at pera ko" sa bahay namin. we talked that IF we want our marriage to work, WE should share everything in life and move as ONE. walang kanya kanya. Sinasabi ko eto ngayon kasi nanggaling kami sa ganun setup nung nagdecide kami magsama bago magpakasal, yung kanya kanya--  at sobrang sakit sa ulo eto! hahaha alam mo yun? you always feel unfair, insecure and not accountable to the other person. Nung nagpakasal kami and decided na simulan namin ang word WE instead of "I" dun palang naayos relasyon namin.  ;D Pero kasi "kasal" na kami ngayon, there's a big difference kung Hindi kasal.

Like the case of sis Girltalker2, you will really feel unfair to shell out some moolah (for your bf's car) lalo na kung iisipin mo sana ginamit mo nalang yun pera na yun for your own kids lalo na't kayo nga mismo mag iina walang sariling sasakyan.  Sabi nga ni DAVE RAMSEY (popular financial guru sa US and counselor) never pay anything for partner unless you have a ring on it. It changes the course of the relationship. Ika niya, hold the urge to help out. A lot of people regret doing it after.

To TS, it's best if you and your bf will talk and layout your plans. Maganda nga kung mas maaga alam niyo pareho ang gusto niyo at kung paano niyo papractisin ang pagiging WE instead of I in the future. But then be careful kasi tama si Sis Girltalker2 lalabas at lalabas parin ang financial aspect sa relationship. walang immunity sa ganyan!  hindi usapin kung malaki sinasahod niyo pareho. ang tanong diyan pano niyo ihahandle ang differences nyo when it comes to money decisions. makikita mo yan eventually ang pagkakaiba niyo as your relationship progress. i'm so sure of it! :) kung sa akin lang opinyon, get to know the person more before you start living together. big decision din kasi yan lalo na you have kids to consider.

^thanks for the reply sis.

I agree with you and sis Girltalker2, need nga pag usapan ang financial matters kahit ano pa income namin. He is a spender and bread winner pa, he also gives money sa mom niya. Ako naman son ko lang ang ginagastusan ko and i?m a saver.

So far sa ngayon ang issue namin is time. Demanding kasi work niya but i keep myself busy rin.

I?ll post update here so far kasi relax lang yung relationship namin. We haven?t really talk about marriage. Pero he is showing through his actions na he is very committed and that he is not going anywhere. I?m just enjoying every stages and milestones in our relationship for now.
