^I am the only child of a single mom and I would like to tell you my mom's story. My mom was quite lucky because during the period when her income is not yet enough for both of us, my grandparents took care of me and paid for my studies in private schools in our province. My mother did not stop working though. She even took on further studies so that she can increase her earning potential and save funds to buy a house for both of us. She goes home to my grandparents' house about twice a month. We wrote letters to each other though snail mail. During summer vacations, she takes me to Manila so we can have quality time. I developed independence. I answered my own homeworks, studied on my own without a tutor and made my own projects by saving money from my allowance. I remember one of my birthdays when I woke up to see only a gift-wrapped present with a letter from my mom. She left early in the morning because she had to go back to work in Manila. I cried and told her in a letter that I do not need a present, I only need her. My mother realized that she cannot afford to send me to a decent private school for my high school education. To save money on tuition fee, she looked for government-run high schools that only cater to few students. Before finishing grade school, she arranged for me to be able to take entrance exams to science high schools in Manila. I passed the entrance exams in the two schools where I took them. At the age of 13, my mother took me from the care of my grandparents. My mom and I established our own home in Manila (she has saved up money to buy a relative's house). My mom continued to study while working. She was able to send me to college because I passed the entrance exam of a state university. We live far from the university. Everyday, my mother prepared my lunch before going to work so that I can get by with my meager allowance. She bought a bicycle to save on transportation expenses. There were days when I see her wallet with only about P50.00 in it. She strived hard for both of us. She took the bar several times. My mother became a lawyer on the day after I graduated from college. Since it is also a dream of mine become a lawyer, my mom got a GSIS loan to finance my first semester in law school. Classes in law school began at 530pm and end at around 830 or 930 depending on the number of units from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, we had classes for an entire day. On my second semester, I began looking for work because I realized that I have a lot of idle time on weekdays and felt that I could help my mom finance my law school education by earning my own income.I got a job at a government agency and continued to study law as a regular student. I began working full-time while studying on a regular class schedule as well. My work began at 8 and ended at 430. I only had an hour to travel to school. I tried very hard to do well in class despite the obstacles. I was happy because I was able to lift some burden off my mother's shoulders. She continued to pay for my books though.Everyday, I feel tired. My mom supported me and encouraged me to go to school. Even on days that I failed to finish the required readings. She urged me to continue my studies everyday. Each day, she promised that law school will soon be over before I know it. I finished law school at the top of my class. When I took the bar, she went with me for 4 Sundays and still prepared my lunch. On the day that the Supreme Court announced the results of the exam, my mom and I drove in her second-hand car to personally look at the list of successful examinees. When we saw my name on the list, I hugged my mom and jumped for joy. It was then that I told her that I offer my achievement to her and she shed tears of joy. All our hardwork paid off. A few years later, my mom sold her old car and gave me some money to buy my own car. She then bought a new car for herself. She said she chose a white sedan because she wants me to ride that car when I finally get married.Several months later, my then boyfriend of eight years, showed me a ring and proposed marriage. I rode my mother's white car on my wedding day. Now, I am several months away from being a mother myself. In a few weeks, my husband and I will be moving to our brand new home. My mother will be staying with us. She is still working but is only a couple of years short before she hits the golden age of 60. When the time comes, it will be my turn to take care and prepare meals for her.I hope our story inspires you to strive harder for your child. To have big dreams for her and to dream with her.
I am having a hard time dealing on how to choose. My position in the office for Regularization is approved already, I waited this for 2 1/2 years and now it finally happened. But now I can't explained the feeling if I am happy or not because I finally have plans to resign and finally committed that I will be with my family especially for my daughter. I am a Single Mom. Please help....
