being chismosa

+1, parang they have nothing better to do. Speculating on other people's lives and making assumptions di naman alam ang truth.

On bobotante naman -- that is a new term i've only learned about here! haha! it's a very complex problem. The poor are often times so poor they are also UNINFORMED and UNEDUCATED and they are uneducated because they are too poor to avail education -- parang catch 22. Damn that they are, still damned that they are. They don't know any better (and it's not their fault), so they vote for someone they think can help them or can better them. In a developing country it's ultimately the middle class that can drive change -- they are, as a group, empowered enough to change the status quo for the upper class, and close enough to the poor, to understand their sentiments.

Donald Trump won. The most idiotic and stupid person ever. Not just as President but eversince. He only inherited his money and his father paid peope for him to graduate in college. So, it's not a matter of being 1st world or developing. I think we should just respect what the people wanted and not label them as bobotante. Malay mo naman mas matalino pala sila sayo. It's a matter of little opportunities and not a level playing field (palakasan, getting away with corruption, etc.) esp. in the PH.

^not sure what your point is but I didn't coin the term bobotante. I sympathized with the feelings of frustration echoed above regarding how some people vote. (That they don't vote because they discern candidates; they vote by what appears personally beneficial to them)

I pointed out in indirect words(compared to what you've used), that voting is a right for representation, and while some are ill-equipped to understand the repercussions or implications of their choice, the only way to influence change is to do it as a society - empower voters through societal change. You can't point out a certain group of voters and hate on them as that solves nothing. To change their vote, something in society must change first.

I won't say why I know that but I do. I don't want to reveal identifying information here, but suffice to say that I get paid to study social, behavioral, socio-political and cultural patterns and sentiments across the world in relation to foreign policy and governance, among others. So yes this topic hits very close to home for me but i don't like to taint it with my personal opinions (don't even want to state my political beliefs here).

Also the Trump comment is unrelated. You disqualified your point by doing exactly what you were pointing out yourself. He was voted by the people of the US (not me) and you  might think he is the worst person ever, but he was the choice of the voters here. Malay mo naman mas matalino sila sayo so why diss their choice?? Plus, the sentiment and behavioral pattern of US politics is traditionally (historically) predictable. No political party has ever elected two presidents successively. It always alternates. If the outgoing president is Democratic, the odds are the next is a Republican. This pattern has not yet changed. It's the sentiment of the US and that sentiment is usually known when Ohio (the swing state) casts its vote. (Trivia: Ohio is also the playing ground of marketing studies because it's a good market indicator for the US -- For example, Starbucks always does all their soft launches in Ohio first, before they do a nationwide roll-out).

Besides, I think the comment by other sisters here probably referred to local elections (bgy level or mayoral or something) because you don't really see vote-buying in grand except in rural areas where it's easier for politicians to influence outcomes. I stand my ground in saying that in developing countries where vote-buying is predominant, the way to change such is to if the middle class intervenes/takes action. And this is not a problem isolated to the Philippines -- it is a pattern prevalent in almost all developing countries. The problems in developed countries are different.

Problema din kasi kung wala namang pagpipilian sa mga candidates. So ang katwiran ng iba, why bother? Put someone worthy and see what happens. They voted Duterte kasi sino ba ang choice? In the US, Trump won because who else is to vote? Some people said they would rather vote a rabbit than to vote Hillary.

Anyways, I am not sure kung nasabi ko na pero mga Pinoy masyadong pinapersonal lahat ng bagay...lol! And the way we hold grudges, ibang level.

^don't think it was ever about the candidates hence no politician names were necessary. I think in the context of this topic, the point was there are voters who don't seem to have a clue about the implications of their votes. That they vote based on short-term personal gains, or their votes are very short-sighted. Yun lang naman yung point, and it's a valid point regardless.

Maraming witness accounts and reports, and even live interviews I've personally seen where they ask voters: bakit po si ganito (candidate x) ang binoto nyo? their answer: kasi mabait po sya at mapagbigay, dumaan po sya dito sa barangay namin at nagbigay ng donasyon sa bawat bahay. (sample)

Regardless of who you vote for, the reason you vote for that person should be solid.

And speaking of all this, i remember Alma Moreno. That classic Karen Davila interview killed me!!  ;D

^Hindi kaya dahil sa political system natin yan? We vote for the personality not the ideology.

^Actually, pwede sis. It is the common flaw in any democratic process. Then again, that's also an oversimplified answer for a complex topic - the US is a democratic process too but uses a different electoral system. Anyway off-topic na yan sis and mas mahabang usapan pa =)

^Sorry it's frustrating sis. I don't follow Philippine politics in detail anymore but i can only say the patterns in the Philippines are TRENDS that apply to almost all under-developed countries. So when I see such, it breaks my heart... I do share your sentiments though.

I remember that BongBong Marcos admitted to falsifying his resume, claiming he graduated from UPenn and UPenn issued a statement that it's not true. How embarrassing? I don't know Philippine laws but falsifying documents is punishable by law, and should prevent someone from ever running. But... nothing came of it.... sad. Let me just be clear, this excerpt about BongBong Marcos is objectively about his credentials. He may be the best leader ever or not, but that's not the point I am making. The law should always apply to everyone.

Should the education system that is mostly based on rote learning be blamed instead of the 'bobotantes'?

I don't see the point of blaming someone who does not know anything themselves.

Yung ?utang na loob?. Minsan mapipilitan kang gumawa ng mali dahil lang may utang na loob ka sa taong involved o dahilan kung bakit ka gagawa ng mali.
