Mga sis I urgely advice everyone to join the FB group sir Akthung recommended. Ang daming important details/tips na hindi pa natin alam/naisip gawin na mahahanp ninyo duon sa discussions and you can also post your questions there if you want to know more on how to survive based sa scenario/location ninyo.

precisely.

as i've mentioned in other threads, these people have thought of the different angles already.

kumbaga sa chess, the questions here in GT...or even the doubts...they're like 1-2 moves ahead. but these peeps, they're like 10-20 moves ahead at least...papunta ka pa lang, pauwi na sila.

some are also living off grid na din or actively maintaining a BOL, BOV, BOB, etc etc

There's an AM radio program on DZMM (630 Hz) called Red Alert that deals with various preparedness topics such as earthquakes, flooding, and other common emergency issues. It's on every Sunday at 10 a.m. It's pretty good especially for those starting out.

Along with accumulating gear, food, water, a bug out location and vehicle, it would be really helpful for you and your family to acquire life skills (e.g. Red Cross Basic First Aid, Wilderness Training). Think of the daughter in the movie San Andreas. It's just a movie but it also shows that quick thinking, knowledge, and a definite plan may save you when disaster strikes.

Came across these tips this morning and thought I would share. Hindi ko naisip yung iba dito. Enlightening:

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE:

1. Clean up dangerous spills. Gasoline can be fatal if it explodes or ignites. If you only have paper towels, use several layers of them because gasoline is poisonous and is very hard to wash off. Covering gasoline spills with some shovelfuls of sand is a good idea, but remember to mark the area by placing a sign that says 'Gasoline spill here'.

2. The sewage will be damaged in major earthquakes, so do not flush the toilet. Instead, shut off the water system from the main valve (have a plumber do this job for you if you don't know where the main valve is). Make sure that you plug up drains from sinks and bathtubs to prevent any sewage back-flow.

3. Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas or hear blowing or hissing noise, open a window and quickly leave the building. Turn off the gas at the outside main valve if you can and call the gas company from your cell phone or from a neighbour's home. Remember, if you turn off the gas for any reason, it must be turned back on by a professional.

4. Look for electrical system damage. If you see sparks or broken or frayed wires, or if you smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker. If you have to step in water to get to the fuse box or circuit breaker, call an electrician first for advice.

5. Check for sewage and water line damage. If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using the toilets and call a plumber. If water pipes are damaged, contact the water company and avoid using water from the tap. You can obtain safe water from bottled water or by melting and boiling ice cubes.

6. Open your cabinets cautiously. Items inside may fall on you if you open the doors quickly. As you inspect the damage, use caution with glass bottles, which may be cracked and leaking. Use extra caution with alcohol, acids, cleaners, or anything that is toxic to the human body.

PREPARATION TIPS:

1. Learn how to shut off the water, the electricity and the gas. Earthquakes can sever a house's pipes and/or damage electrical lines, creating situations that can easily become deadly. Be ready to turn off your house's utilities after an earthquake to preserve your safety.

2. Keep dangerous objects in a secure cabinet or on lower shelves. To minimize the risk of injury or damage in the event of an injury, keep any dangerous possessions, like breakable objects, heavy objects, flammable liquids and hazardous liquids, away from places where they are likely to fall or spill. Keep these things in safe, secure locations away from the designated safe zones in your house.

there's so much info. so many comments and different approaches. impossible to bring over here

just refer to momentum's commentary post.

they've recently been classified as secret. you'd need to be added by a member of the page. some of the girls here are members already.

@ sis hyder0926 -- the contents of your go bag will come from various sources like hardware stores, pharmacies, outdoor shops, supermarkets, etc. The most effective go bag will be one that you assembled yourself since you will be familiar with all its contents. Here's a basic list made by the Philippine Red Cross. Tweak it na lang to suit your family's needs. :) Don't forget to prepare for your pets, too.

^ Thanks Summersong..

not to advertise or anything I saw base kamp on fb and they have some stuff available there like:
1. tent
2. flash light
3. sleeping bags
4. expandable water container
5. cooking equipment

wondering where to get the water purification tablet.

discussed this with my husband and he just stared at me. i said its better to be prepared all the time.
what ticks me off is that i believe he joined the boy scouts when he was in grade school. and i didnt get to join the girl scouts because i was a sickly kid..

sis generics pharmacy sells the aquatabs water purifying tablets, but only the 10 liter tablets. and not all branches carry them. you'd have to look around.

ako nga i send the 1 liter tablets to friends kasi practical and most water bottles are 1 liter. remember sometimes people have 2 water containers or even 3. 1 is the really pure one as reserve.  the other one is one where you purify. another one is the one you frequently drink from while waiting for the purification of your other bottle to finish.

its easy to buy contents of your bug out bag but you need to train for any eventuality.

also, it doesnt matter if you had done scouting before because things change. protocols change. even first aid procedures change.

so continuous training lagi dapat. as much as possible. if you can't practice by going out once in a while, you can practice at home or in your backyard.

kami nga we don't go for tents because mabigat lalo na if you have to rush on foot. pag tent usually dinidivide sa members yung ikakarga.  at sese blades we use hammocks. custom design namin based on numerous testing in the boondocks.

yung isang friend namin binaha ang bahay niya, abit over bewang, and nung tapos na yung bagyo and hintay niya mag subside ang water  he rigged a hammock in his house over the water level and nakatulog pa sila ng mabuti.

may mosquito net ang hammock namin at may rainfly na pwede gawing tent pag walang masasabitan. its so light that every person can bring his own hammock.

you need to have quality tools din. one thing a preparedness person doesnt want to do is to lend his tools cuz usually naabuse at minsan nalilimutan ibalik. better have your own knife, multitool etc.

maganda na "light" is yung headlamp. but some situations call for a hand held flashlight. so better have both. maganda yung 7 LED na energizer headlamp. bang for the buck na yun. but if you want to go for a mountaineering brand like blackdiamond or petzl. nasa inyo na yun.

cooking equipment

two fold, better if you have simple one that can be used with wood and one with fuel canister. pag umuulan basa ang kahoy. you might need to find thick wood and chop it to get into the inner wood which is dry.

great pointers and tips Akthung! thanks!

will look for generics pharma..

where to train? im trying to get hold of an uncle in the navy. i bet he has kick ass training as to survival tactics etc.

is a sleeping bag advisable? i live the hammock because it raises you above ground and away from the elements.

we have a hilly property in bulacan but im not sure if we can use that as a bug out camp. i have not gone there also because its from my hubbys family. my side of the family is from cavite.. im from qc by the way..

training depends na kung saan like red cross or something...

at Seseblades, my friends, train at least twice a year, yung isa pag summer, yung isa pag tag ulan. para ma experience yung elements.

nagbabalak din sila for kids. i just dont know when.

the good thing with sese blades, Doc Ar is well...a doctor. sanay din sa field yan as he trains tactical/battle field medicine, first aid, etc etc...

if you want to go the seseblades route and join training, just let us know. he can also create one specifically for GT.

The first important thing to consider when preparing for a disaster is you and your family's needs and capabilities: how many are you, your health status, any special medical needs, are you all trained on certain skills.

Once a calamity occurs, is it safe to stay at your home or will you decide to go elsewhere? If you decide to bug out, do you have a common place where you all agree to meet if you ever get separated? What kind of terrain will you encounter en route to your meeting or bug out location? How long is the average time to reach it via vehicle or on foot? What kind of conditions does your goal location have -- will it have ample water supply, food, security, shelter?

How long will you be preparing for? What are the costs you expect to incur during such calamities? Rescue and relief arrive super slow in this country. You'd better be able to take care of yourself for at least several weeks. A 72-hour kit is a commendable start, but preparing for a major quake in Manila will require more extensive planning and resources.

Once you answer these questions (plus a lot more as you go along) you'll be able to determine what types of equipment and supplies will be most useful and valuable to you.

As for training, you can start in your own backyard. If you bought a tent, practice putting it up, sleeping in it, putting it away. Cook with your portable stove. Be as healthy and fit as you can possibly be. There's nothing worse than having a backpack full of the latest gear that you don't know how to use nor can you carry the pack for a kilometer without having a heart attack. Red Cross offers Basic Life Support courses. Learn a defense skill, camping, swimming, planting, raising animals, cooking using coal and firewood. Basically essential life skills pre-electricity.

Actually I want to meet Tata Kasoy whom Doc Arvin and group met with not so long ago. He looks so bad ass. ;D

Actually I want to meet Tata Kasoy whom Doc Arvin and group met with not so long ago. He looks so bad ass. ;D

sarap kausap yun, a few years back he spent an hour or 2 in the morning when we arrived early and time passed by so quickly - with all his stories

you girls should go to that area. i like Pamulaklakin for the following reasons:

1. Safe. its like your big backyard. no rebels or anything.
2. the area has water
3. the people there know Doc Arvin
4. Doc Arvin had conducted medical missions in the past so there's good will in the air
5. the americans used to train there. if its good enough for them, its good enough for us.
6. Ex US Navy Seal Joel Lambert had a hard time evading the Scout Rangers in that area in the show Manhunt. so it does say something about #5.

Doc Ar and friends are also VERY good in self defence skills. magugulat kayo sino tinuturuan nila.

**********

baka mag tratrain sila Doc Ar ng early August. baka meron sa inyo gusto sumama.

or you girls can form a GT group and sabay sabay kayong lahat. training for GT ba.

as for sleeping bags sa hammock.

yes you can. if you're sensitive to the cold you may want to put something beneath you, between the sleeping bag and the hammock, like a pad or something.

considering the climate in the philippines there shouldn't be much of a problem when it comes to insulation. others are happy with wool blankets in their hammocks.

sometimes we make extra large hammocks para kasya pa isang tao or bata.

the hammock that i like is the asymmetrical hammock. this kind of design allows you to lie down diagonal to the center line. with this you can lie down FLAT!

then by design, you're high up the ground, away from animals and insects. tapos you can also use the hammock as a chair during the day.
