PREPARING FOR THE EARTHQUAKE THAT WILL HIT METRO MANILA

We have been seeing this all over the news lately..earthquakes hitting Nepal..then Japan, Hawaii and as said by Philvocs malapit narin tyo matamaan dito sa Metro Manila. Actually nagkaroon na nga ng 4.5 mag earthquake recently in some parts of Bicol according to the news recently. Some mayors already urge some residents to relocate already as they are residing sa fault line.

What do we do to prepare for this disaster? Sure, we should not panic. But as they say: It is better to have a plan then not need it, rather than need a plan but don't have it.

Philvocs trained us years ago on how to prepare for an earthquake. As early as after I graduated highschool (2001) eh they already knew that soon Metro Manila will be hit by a very strong 8 magnitude earthquake that will destroy the whole city. At eto na nga, it's all over the news.

Mga sis and bros, if you have any tips you want to share, please do.
Will share some of what I remember from the training in a bit.

Here are some of the things I remember during the training:

1. Have a survival kit/bag ready under the bed or somewhere near your exit plan.Some tips/list from Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org/prepare/location/home-family/get-kit

2. Practice with your family/etc your exit and alternative exit route to lessen panicking

3. some earthquakes strikes at night while asleep, so best thing to wake you up before it hits bad, place a stainless steel empty glass (yung mga small size lang at light) on the edge of a table, naka usli na half of it, so that konting shake/movement lang eh babagsak siya at magigising kayo (hopefully). Not sure if okay ang glass material as mas heavy ito compared sa stainless.

4. Observe animals around you, sila ang unang makakaramdam and makaka-sense ng earthquake and they usually all panic, bang their heads on the wall, cry out or mag-iingay, turn in circles..mga birds sa cage eh nagkakagulo sa loob, basta you will see hindi normal ang kanilang kinikilos at ingay..you will see na they are panicking.

5. stay away from glass windows/doors

6. Best place you should aim for going before lumakas pa yung earthquake is an open field..away from buldings, posts, etc

7. I used to believe in the Triangle of Life, but according to the Red cross, Drop, cover, and hold under a table or desk is still the best recommendation. Hope someone can shed light on this. More about this: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/triangle.asp

8. Read and educate yourself. There are a lot of tips on the net on how to survive an earthquake

9. Request your office to conduct earthquake survival seminars to educate everyone.This is should actually be implemented na in all offices especially now.

Thanks sis for this topic, medyo paranoid na din ako after those news of earthquakes in Nepal and Japan. Tapos puro west and east valley fault na din sa news at FB. Napanaginipan ko na nga din recently.
I used to keep 2 bags of clothes, cash, toiletries at important docs sa cabinet namin. Kaso nagamit na cash, nagamit na din toiletries. Now I know I need to pack again, just in case.

Pati ako medyo panic mode na din. Wala pa kami ready na backpack or disaster first aid kit,gamit etc.. Kaya naglilista na ako ng bibilin once mag visit kami sa Supermarket. Nasa condo pa naman kami pero midrise lang,nasa 3rd floor. buti na lang dito sa Pasig ang fault line nasa may Bagong Ilog,Valle Verde, kahit di sa ilalim namin,malakas pa din yon kaya dapat ready. Ang natatakot ako sa.hubby ko kasi yung office nila nasa 36th floor siya. Kakatakot talaga,di naman maiiwasan to pero sana.kung mangyari man,yung kumpleto kami magkakasama dito sa bahy kasi di ko alam pag kami lang ng anak ko siguro maiiyak ako.

Hala, di ko masyado pinansin to kagabi sa news, pero dahil sa post niyo, parang gusto ko na din magready ng emergency kit. Nasa third floor kami at may rooftop sa taas. So if ever babagsak to, semento pa rin babagsak sa amin. Gusto ko na tuloy lumipat ng house. Pasig din kami. Ano suggestions niyo na ilagay sa emergency bag?

Sana din pag nangyari man to dito, may kasama ako sa bahay. Pag gabi kasi ako lang mag-isa.

^ Yan din ang fear ko, na once it hits eh hindi kami magkakasama ng family ko.

Ang kinakatakot ko naman, yung room namin yung pinakataas niya may malaking glass window and direct sya sa ulo namin kapag nakahiga. So pag lumindol at nabasag yun, baka yun pa ikamatay namin. Im planning to have it tinted.

Sige ako na nga rin, magpprep na ako ng emergency bag. Scary!!!

Ganyan din dasal ko, na sana if something like this happens e magkakasama kami ni hubby and baby. I can only imagine my panic and uneasiness kung mangyaring nasa labas ako, nasa office si hubby at nasa bahay si baby with the helpers.. at least pag magkasama kami, mas magiging focused ako..

For now, my "emergency" kit includes some money, atm card, credit card, jewelry (pangsanla or pambenta if kailangan), passports, phones, water, biscuits, latest family picture (in case magkawalaan kami).. will revisit my list again to add some more..

i highly suggest joining the group Filipino-Survivalists in Facebook.

many of our countries top professionals in disaster management and survival are members, even the founder of Project NOAH is there.

you have firefighters, rescuers, EMTs, Doctors, Military/Law enforcers etc etc.

if you have concerns, just ask  on the newsfeed and they will answer. yung mga nakikita niyong iniinterview sa TV naroon sila.

as for gadgets they can lead you to the sister site of the group where they do buying and selling.

Okay, i've received a few PMs regarding disaster preparedness.

apparently the group that i mentioned has changed its status.

HOWEVER,

members, including me, are scattered all over the FB in different sub groups.  one of them is Seseblades.

Seseblades is a local Filipino tool making company that focuses on disaster preparedness, outdoor and survival.

The founder of the company is very experienced in survival, outdoor, preparedness and is also a medical doctor (who's also adept in austere medicine and battlefield medicine). siya sana kukunin ko as speaker for disaster preparedness for GT peeps noon.

You can join the group and put your questions on the newsfeed and they will answer. yung mga members ng survivalists ay naroon din.

the people there are practical and you'll be given good advice on how to prep and maximize your peso.  wala na din masasayang na pera sa learning curve as they will give you the best options.

isa nga doon is the importer of one fantastic survival water filter. its so small yet so effective and CHEAP. 

anyway, they're all there. so hope you guys can join. we also have members from other countries.

It lets you input your location and estimate how far you are from the fault line. Sadly, yung condo namin is 2km away lang. Medyo malapit
