Had the same dilemna last year. When my kid took the entrance exam for this school, it was supposed to be for nursery. My kid was 5 then turning 6 on november. Sabi ko super late na for a nursery which is usuallY mga 4 year olds. But anyway pinagexam ko pa din then the result recommended my kid na mag grade 1 na. I was so surprised. Kung years spent lang ang paguusapan i could have jumped right into it but then I know hindi pa ready ang kid ko so I said I-kinder muna. Now he is 6 turning 7 and mag grade 1 na sya. I have friends na nauna ako ng few months manganak sa kanila pero grade 2 na kids nila this school year. Hindi ako nanghihinayang sa 1 year na sana na save. Mas importante saken ang readiness ng bata.

Sa akin naman my son will be turning 6 this July. Ginawa namin nung 4yrs old ang son ko nagnursery siya and after nursery enroll namin siya for summer classes for K1 so nung 5yrs old siya nasa K2 na siya.  For preparation niya sa Grade 1 he is currently tutored 1hour every day monday to friday at home. puro TV kasi siya ngayong bakasyon baka makalimutan nya studies nya and at the same time review na rin nya for entrance exam sa new school niya

Sa case ng daughter ko, naiwan sya sa Prep (she is 6). Mga kaklase nya nag-Grade 1 na. So I feel bad.

Pero ang bottomline naman, if kaya na ng anak mag-Grade 1 for his/her age. Some schools prefer na marunong na mag-read yung bata para I-accept sa Grade 1 (wow).

Naisip ko na lang pagpasok nya sa Grade 1, mas me advantage na sya sa mga kaklase nya. Sana mas breezy sa kanya kasi nagkaron naman sya ng extra year to learn some stuff na ituturo pa lang sa Grade 1 na-discuss na nila sa Prep

Hay! Grateful for this thread!  It dilemma ko ngayon with my twin girls who are both incoming grade 1 at OB Montessori. They're just 5.6 months by June this SY.

They both graduated from Advanced Casa (Prep for traditional term, K for K-12) last March.  Pero, sila ang youngest in their class.  I've raised an issue with the teachers and asked paano kung may incoming students from other schools (usually preschools) and they graduated as Prep/K and and age nila ay usually 6.10 (or some are almost 7 by June).  Alam ko kaya ng twins ko, pero mas may edge ang older kids both physically and mentally na dinedevelop palang ng mga 5 year old kids vs. almost 7 YO kids.

Medyo, at lost ako and enrollment na.  I have this dilemma kung i-homeschool sila for a year tapos Grade 1 for next SY since 6.6 YO palang sila by then.

What do you think, mommies? Ano ba ang cut-ff dates ng mga schools ng mga kiddos ninyo for incoming Grade 1, now that K-12 is implemented?  Big schools kasi that I've asked, like DLSU-Z, Ateneo, Miriam are using 5.8 for Prep/K and 6.8 for Grade 1.

^as far as i know, entry level now for Ateneo is grade 1. Before kasi Kinder. But because of the whole K-12, Kinder became grade 1.

La Salle Greenhils: student must be 4.6 yo for Kinder and 5.6 yo for grade 1. This is the reason why we ended up enrolling our son to LSGH cause since he is November-born, he'll miss the cutoff  for grade 1 by 1 mo. He'll get to enter grade 1 at LSGH in 2016, while in Ateneo 2017. Although I really prefer that he goes to my alma mater. Siguro sa college na lang.

Saint Pedro Poveda College: I think they have the same cutoff as Ateneo for grade 1. But they offer Kindergarten.

For me your best gauge is your kid. It happened to me. My son started schooling at 4. I enrolled him for Nursery but on the first day of class he was transferred to Kinder because of his age daw. 6 by June. Sana hindi na nila pina enroll sa Nursery in the first place. Nadoble pa bayad ko sa books. Nagpa tutor sya para daw makahabol. I saw how he was losing interest in going to that school. It's a traditional school they have 9 books and 30-40 items per subject sa exam.

My mother in law who is a teacher told me once na iba iba ang phasing ng bata. Kahit na ipatutor ko sya hindi ko sya mapipilit. Mataas naman grades nya. Pero he dreaded going there. Made me realize na i should have been firmed and let him stay sa Nursery. Or better yet should have enrolled him in a Progressive school.

Kaya this school year I transferred him na.

We have exactly the same situation. We made a mistake in enrolling our son to this Catholic School (daw) when we first moved in Makati. And then , we later found out that hindi lang kami ang nagrereklamo sa school na ito. Puro sila activities (donation dito, need to pay this, that at kung ano ano pa).

Now, we decided to transfer him to another schoo. We found a good school howver we had problems because of the K-12.

My son is turning 6 this August and nag start na naman siya mag tutor this summer. Kasi naman, very playful pa ang anak ko and most of the time, tamad mag aral. May mood swings narin siya

Pero sabi ng Guidance e kung hindi daw siya maging Grade 1 e mapapagalitan sila ng DepEd because of his age.

Nung nagpa assess kami last week, hindi siya nakapasa kasi hindi pa siya magaling magbasa and magsulat. Ang gusto kasi nila para makapasa daw ng Grade 1 e marunong na magbasa ng Paragraph. Grabe! Ang alam ko during my time, I learned how to read ng ganung kahaba Grade 2 na ako. hehe

I felt bad because kailangan daw talaga Grade 1 na siya this coming schoo year.

Any thoughts on this? Im worried na baka mapagod siya and lalo mawalan ng gana sa school.

Pero sabi bg Guidance, ngayon lang naman daw yan mahirap sa bata. Kapag daw kasi nag Prep parin siya e siya din daw ang kawaa kasi mas matanda siya sa mga kaklase niya. Kung baga e maiilang daw siya.,

actually sis, lahat halos lahat ng school ang parameter para maging grade 1 ay marunong ng magread. Actually it's really hard talaga tangapin especially we knew that na mga kids pa sila pero sobrang taas ng parameter for their age. I will be transferring son to a new school, he already graduated from prep but since he is having hard time reading we already anticipated na baka parepeat sa kanya ang prep sa new school nya.

I remember my own entrance exam for Grade 1 noon (di pa uso nun Grade 1 na 6 years old. 7 dapat talaga), pinagbasa din ako. Mabilis na ko magbasa so pasado ako ---- pero I remember it very well, pati yung itsura ng pages na pinapabasa sa kin, wala pa naman paragraphs.

Pero siguro kasi they're taking into consideration din yung bagong generation na talaga namang fast learners? Ewan ko ba, but at the back of my mind, parang feeling ko the K-12 curriculum (or at least on how some schools implement it) is 'hurrying' the kids into learning things, instead of them mastering the skills first before mag-move on.

My 6 year-old is going through the natural progression sa school nya, so Senior Kinder sya this year. Most of the relatives and kapitbahays her age are moving on to grade 1 na. I realized na keri lang - no matter sino mauna sa kanila lahat - at the end of the day, what matters is how each kid learns and how each kid develops.

Na admit na for grade 1 ang kid ko but we were asked na continue ang tutor for reading..I agreed that they considered the age..I hope may son will enjoy and cope with his new school.yun previous Nya na stressed sya sa curriculum ...

parang mali naman kung sa age ibe-base ang pagiging grade1 ng bata. I agree dapat sa skills and maturity yun.

My son will be 7, and he'll be in Grade I.  Walang namang issue sa school. We know kasi na hinde pa kaya ng son ko ang mag-grade 1. Mejo independent na kasi dapat in Grade 1, so hinde pa talaga nya kaya, kahit na he knows how to read na.

Mommies, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this. We are a bit stressed na kasi I can see on my son that he is not yet mature enough or ready for Grade 1. I have clients na teachers from other schools and I have asked their opinions narin. 50-50 din sila actually.

One said that 4 years ago pa na approve ang K-12 and maganda siya sa bata. Kasi daw sinusundan daw nila ang education status ng America para makahabol naman daw ang mga Pilipino. Kung titignan mo daw kasi e kulang ang number of years na na take ng bata compared sa America.

When we talked to another teacher na merong college and grade school kids na e sabi sakin na even with the K-12 she still prefers na mature na ang bata and ready na for Grade 1 bago ipasok sa elementary.

Even her kids e 7 years old na nung pumasok sa grade 1.

We have until tonight to decide.

Now, we are sure na mag Kinder 2 muna siya despite of the K-12.

We just hope na ok ang school dun or else we have to look for another school. Btw, yung school kung saan namin balak siya i enroll is sa Bettey's Vermillion Academy in Pasay.

^ Hi po. It's 30k for Grade 1 and 29k for Kinder. We didnt enroll our son there anymore. We got pissed with the Principals attitude and I personally didn't like the facilities.

We checked SMA in Pasay and was advised that we our son was really not ready emotionally in grade 1 and they okd na mag Kinder na muna basta naka note that it's the Parents decision.

WHen we went back there, we were told that they really wont accept our son for kinder. They can't even explain why. But based on our conversation e reader and independent na dapat and Grade 1 sa kanila. But he cannot assure us If there will be adjustments na gagawin for kids na hindi pa magaling magbasa and hindi pa talaga ready for grade1 emotionally.

Nainis ako when the Principal asked me - "Bakit mo ba pinipilit na mag kinder 2 muna ang anak niyo? Para maging honor student"/

I can't believe a School Principal would say that.

So, we went back to SMA the next day and we enrolled our son there.

Facilities, School staff, etc are way better than Betty's Vermillion. It was worth it to spend 17k more.

Hi mommies, yan din ang dilemma ko about my son who is 4yrs and 5months thid june, kinder na sya. Just this morning i texted his teacher if he could be assess kung pwede na sya mag prep and skip kinder. Kasi when we browse his books eh parang same lang nung nursery nya last year. Sabi ng anak ko mommy alam ko na yan.

Another dillema ko is yung 5.5 yo ba is pasok sa prep or pwede na grade 1. January kasi bday na.

sis, minsan akala lang natin pareho yung aaralin pag tiningnan mo sa books pero most of the time, iba yung level ng difficulty. I believe some lessons are also repeated for mastery purposes. Ako personally mas gusto ko yun, yung hindi lang nila 'alam' yung skill, kundi ma-master nila. It will make more complex lessons easier for them in the long run. Parang sa math, if na-master mo basics, mas madali gawin yung ibang operations ganyan.

You also have to look into the emotional and physchological readiness of your kid. And yun, in some schools they require na kailangan maayos na magsulat and marunong na mag-read yung bata before mag-Grade One.

KVsWahmmy  - haha. Sabi nga ng sister ko kung siya daw ang kausap nung Principal e nireklamo na niya sa Deped yun. Actually when we checked DepEd, for Private Schools, as long as the parents have the consent na mag kinder parin ang bata dahil sa assessment ng Guidance e ok lang. Ewan ko bakit iba ang policy nila. Hindi ko na sinagot yung Principal. Deadma nalang ako. hehe
