Living with a Geeky Husband :)
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:55:29 am »
Just wondering how life is with fellow wives who have geeky husbands? And by geeky, I don't mean yung nagbabasa ng maraming libro o mahilig sa Naruto, no. I mean the whole enchelada: hilig sa Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer 40k, anime, manga, Gunpla building, Online MMORPG, tabletop RPG, Fantasy Roleplays, the works...yung tipong nagwawala pag meh bagong balita sa favorite series o comic book series niya, who fanboy over geekdom movies and shows like Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, etc.

Ganun kasi si hubby ko, and I love it, kasi one of my dreams talaga was to marry an intelligent, hardcore geek, even though I'm not as hardcore geek as he is.

Downside nga lang, magastos sa laruan...este, plastic models and action figures :P

Kayo wives of geeks? How's life with geeky hubby? Nakakatuwa ba o nakakapikon? Or both?

it's the best thing ever! ^_^
i love my husband so much.
we watch star trek together every time we eat dinner and now i've even become more of a fanatic of star trek than he is.
but what he loves most is playing console games. we have both wii and xbox at home. my family never had the money to buy these games for us growing up so i didn't know how to play them though i knew about them. so he taught me to play super mario, mario kart, portal (this one is a puzzle game, really interesting), and mortal kombat. the only game i've refused to play so far is left for dead, the zombies unnerve me.
we both love to read so we share books. his recommended sci fi books are a hit with me like the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. we're now reading an hg wells' book together before we sleep at night.
being a mechanical and design engineer, he diys a lot of stuff at home to make our lives easier. he's made a cool trackball mouse and a floating shelf for our plants.
i think the key thing being with a geeky hubby is to share in his interests and pursuits and also to share our own hobbies with them. this way we learn something new from each other all the time ^_^

Count me in! :) i am not geek, but am usually attracted to geek guys. There's a certain appeal talaga with geek guys.  My husband has collection of comics, online games, and we're saving money pa for his ps4. We have a daughter na kaya medyo di na pwede masyado ang bili basta basta. So now he resorted to downloading comics and anime online. But as for games, he has a steam account where he downloads games online legally. :)

The good thing living with him is he's really homebody so less worries on cheating. But the downside is sometimes we quarrel on the times he spend on games especially wehave a toddler and no yaya, and we are both working.

Not sure if I'd want a geeky husband for myself.

Pero I agree, merong upside - which is, that they tend to stay at home and don't have other "damaging" vices such as smoking, drugs, alcohol.

Pero yun din, if they are into those geeky stuff na labis labis na sa normal that it affects the family finances, I think it can also be classified as an addiction rin like being involved in vices. Moderation is key.

I love my geeky husband! :)

Sobrang fan siya ng mga superheroes like Superman, X-men, Avengers. Etc. Battle Star Galactica, Stargate SG1, Avatar, Interstellar, Matrix etc. Sa games naman, ang gusto niya RPG like Diablo and Darkness Reborn. Di naman sya mahilig sa toys. Pag nagiinternet yan unang pupuntahan niyan yung Gizmag, Lifehacker & Innocentive. LOL!

True! My hubby couldn't leave without internet. He watches a lot of youtube videos din on reviews of movies, animes, games, and comics. Even history and scientific experiments din minsan pinapanood.

I couldn't monitor na what he plays. More than 100 na ata ang games niya sa steam account niya. Laman din siya ng data blitz. Hahaha. :D

And he wants to train our daughter to be geeky/gamer in the future. Cool daw kasi yun.

Awwww I'm so glad that other wives of geeks are happy with their geek husbands too! So true, na because homebody sila, and too focused on their hobbies and us, geek husbands often tend not to care for extra marital affairs. Glad kasama tayo sa hobbies nila if you know what I mean ;) Tsaka they spend so much money on their hobbies (and their wives and families of course) na wala na tira for anything else)

Took me a while to convince him to go with me for a vacation, hopefully this year :)

And yeah, there's a certain appeal to geeky guys. I think it's the intelligence. Yung mga hobbies nila kasi are pursuits of the intellectuals in my opinion. And brainy is the new sexy <3

It hurts though to see him browse at some gundam or warhammer 40k books pero di niya pwede mabili kasi I limit him to one book a month and one gundam every 2 months (note, dati sa super adik niya sa books, he buys over 20 brand new, hardbound books a month, along with 3 gunpla models amounting to 3000 each a month) Do you guys take charge or just leave him be? Sometimes this leaves me torn kasi nakakatuwa siya when he geeks out at his fandom :P

Joining :-*

My husband is a game addict. He has PC, XBox, PS4, iPad, and his phone for all his games. He also has Steam account and then a frequent shopper at DataBlitz.

It's true he doesn't like going out much unless necessary like may mga events o kaya errands. Mahal nga lang ang "bisyo" niya like I didn't know the freaking PS4 games cost like 2.5k each!

gwendy730, I think it really depends on how you handle your finances as a couple like set-up and what you discussed on how save/spend. Kung disposable income naman yun, I guess it should be fine.

In our case, our income is combined and then he asks me when making purchases o kaya kasama ako when he's buying his stuff. I just make sure the savings/investments come first before the expenses.

in our case, I'm the geek! IT professional, stays up late playing games on iPad, loves old school cartoons, into sci fi novels and movies, watches documentaries a lot, loves classical music like marches and overtures.  oh anything needing assembly and setup with electronics, appliances and furniture in the house I do.  and my peg for dressing up is Ellen degeneres, somewhat tomboyish but with made up hair and makeup.

with regards to finances, this should be something that the couple discusses regularly. set a budget for everything, including how much each of you can spend on your wants.
surprisingly, this is not a difficult topic between my husbad and myself. he understands the need for a budget and the need to save up. he's even more conscious about spending now that we're married and he initiates some of our finance discussions sometimes. another thing is you both agree to tracking your own personal expenditures. we have a shared google sheet where we record our expenses every day.

My hubby knows din the extent as to how much he can spend for his games. He'll usally get a cut na from his paycheck and the rest, he gives for me to budget. He usually waits for sale before he buys one. But if he can't wait, he'll ask permission before buying. Although minsan nagugulat pa rin ako sa mga credit card purchases niya both on ipad games and PC games since he uses mine. He knows naman our top.priority is our daughter.

Sometimes lang talaga they stay up late na finisihing a stage or level sa games nila.

Ah yes, waking up early and sleeping late.. This is fine on weekends but on weekdays, it's hard to get my husband to sleep on time unless he's super tired from work.

Oh..so i am married to a geek pala...all along i just thought i am married to a maluho guy...

Seriously, ganitong hobby can be quite expensive. When people visit our place, they get confused kala nila may anak akong lalake..nope sa asawa ko po yan..at hindi po yan laruan..heheh

nung lumabas yung Diablo 3 few years back, naku tuwang tuwa..i also played the game to know what the fuss was about...pagalingan pa nga kami ng tao at pataasan ng level.... medyo nakalayo din naman yung sakin at malakas na rin ;) but i stopped napaka-time consuming kasi at pinagpupuyatan ko pa..kawawa din ako kasi i still have to prepare early morning for the kids pa.

tapos, nagiging bonding din nila yun, like, naglalaro ng tekken...kaya lang may pagkapikon anak ko pag natatalo eh parang ako hehe... and he lets the kids help pag magbubuo sya ng gundam (except for the PGs)..... and sometimes we'd take pictures of ironman and barbie, or thor with another doll in different poses....hahaha

Ayun, ganun..sa finances, kinukuha nya sa allowance nya and minsan nagsa-sideline sya or nagbebenta ng mga ibang kits or figures.
Siempre naka-separate yung budget para sa household so ok lang sa akin. but honestly for me ha since hindi ako magastos, nanghihinayang ako kasi parang unnecessary expenses...but oh well, whatever floats his boat... Sencia na napahaba na pala! :)

Wife of a geek here. Husband has a collection of over 300 (or probably more) Transformers robots of different lines: G1 line, etc.  He also plays a lot of RPG games: Skyrim, Divinity, Original Sin, Armello, Star wars Kotor and Jedi Academy, The Witcher, Shadow Run Returns, among many others.. Aside from toys, he's well-read about science, politics, and atheism. He has to be; it's important in his job to be well-read as well.

I'm not a geek myself, but I let him do his thing.  I'm a hermit, so if he's in his own geek world, this gives me time to be alone too. Win-win for us. :D We live in a different country now, so minsan nakaawa asawa ko kasi he can't talk to anyone about robots but me, since his fellow geek friends are back at home.

With regard to finances it's not a problem for us, because he sets aside a certain budget for his toys - or as he likes to call them his err "action figures".  ::) Syempre, a big part of our household budget goes to household muna. We don't have a kid yet, so he allots a certain part of his salary for hobbies.

Medyo nakakarelate ako dito. Medyo lang kasi my husband is not 100% geek hahaha mga 50% lang.

Probably the reason is because of our finances. Though minsan humihirit sya hahaha pero I promised him naman pag nakaluwag kami bibilin namin lahat yan hahaha. So now he's planning to work sa Dubai. I have my own business pero hindi kasi enough e.

Pag naumpisahan namin pag-usapan yang mga yan, there's no stopping us."

So yeah, I think I belong here. My husband would passionately talk to me about physics, astronomy, robotics, business as though we're just having a mundane conversation.

He also loves reading manga; he grew up reading One Piece. Yung Bleach naman, he would read it just for the heck of it. I finished the Kenshin anime nung pinalabas ang movies dito. Then gustong ipapanood sa akin ang One Piece anime, sabi ko, "Sige, basta maghanda ka pag naging adik ako, there's no stopping me." Ang daming episodes nito.

As for movies, yeah he makes sure that we watch Marvel and Pixar movies, etc. Among his favorite sites are engadget, listverse, etc.

But like sugar n spice, hindi sya ma-bili ng gadgets or any toys for the big boys. Kuripot naman, kaya good thing.

Like reservoir dogs, ok lang din ang mag-adik sya with games as his destressor, habang ako ay nag-mi-me time. Hindi naman yan madalas, happens when he's stressed.

Like other husbands here, he is also a homebody. He prefers to stay home rather than be out somewhere else. But from time to time he also gets to meet his HS best buddies who live near us. Hindi masakit sa ulo, walang bisyo like sigarilyo, inom at barkada. As a family man, very committed talaga. But of course, di kami perfect.

so true on the being a homebody part. he doesn't like going out so much and there was one time our events clashed (his phd friends were having a house party but i had to attend a bridal party) so he had to go alone. when we were both home later in the evening, he said, he felt very lonely without me there.
my husband is also not sporty. i'm the sporty one - i love football - so when we were still dating, i brought him to matches where filipino teams were playing so he could see how crazy i am. hahaha! though keeping fit is important to him so he goes to the gym to swim and he also runs every day. on weekends, we work out together :)

My husband also hates going on social events kahit inuman with his friends. Kahit anong push ko. He always says napapagod kasi siya sa ganun since he needs to exert effort to share stories etc.

He's also not sporty. He can't even ride a bike. He doesnt understand basketball rules. But nagygym siya once in a while.

On sport, Pacquiao fights lang tapos showbiz kung ano nasa FB feed hehe.

Wouldn't say mahilig but if it comes, he doesn't dismiss the info or the conversation. Kaya naman sumabay.

On sport, my husband, despite being a geek, is (or used to be) very athletic. But no, he doesn't play basketball, football, or any conventional sports. He does arnis, and he's very good at it.  He used to be part of national PH team in the SEAG in 2005. Although he's less active now because of work and his hobbies.

He loves watching MMA. He reads a lot about MMA fight analysis on Vice news.
