Venting: MIL
« on: September 08, 2014, 11:02:16 am »
Friends, pasensya na for venting what I'm feeling here.  Kaso wala kasi talaga akong malapitan about this, and last time na nagka-personal crisis ako, your advice here had been so helpful.  So, I'm hoping na ganun ulit this time around.

Friends, may problem ako sa MIL ko.  Actually, with both my in-laws, but mostly sa MIL ko.  My husband is the only son (madami syang kapatid na babae), so syempre love na love sya ng MIL ko.  Strained na talaga yung relationship namin ng MIL ko, even before ko sya maging MIL.  Medyo nawalan ako ng respect sa kanya kasi may history sya na greedy sa money (even at the expense of her other kids), and also, materialistic (kailangan malamangan nya lagi yung mga anak nya and kakilala -- that's very important to her).  To be honest, it shouldn't bother me, but it does kasi my husband expects me to respect her, and treat her as I do my own mom.  I want to respect her, but I'm having a hard time knowing what I've seen and observed.

If I don't see my in-laws often, it's okay, I can deal with them pag occasionally nagkikita kami sa mga family events.  Even if we see them often, okay pa din kasi di naman kami matagal magkasama (few hours, tops), so kaya ko na i-sacrifice yun for peace with my husband.  Kaso, parang tine-tempt talaga ako ng fate, talagang gusto yata akong magalit and mainis kasi lagi akong may napapansin every time I see them.  And of course, it's worse if we're spending more time together, like if we go on vacation.

1.  They stop by our house unannounced (minsan, nap time ng baby namin, they come, they don't even knock, they just use their key and let themselves in).  Mahabang kwento why they even have a key, and believe me, friends, it's a necessary evil, unfortunately.

2.  They call our house often, kahit na magkikita na kami in a few hours, usually during nap time ng baby namin.  So our phone keeps ringing, and it often wakes our baby up prematurely.  Needless to say, cranky si baby and syempre cranky na din si Mommy.  Why can't they text???  Or call my husband's cell phone, kung talagang kailangan nila makausap?

We travel for work, and halos every week, nakikisuyo sila magpabili ng kung ano-ano (bread, canned goods, etc), kesyo iba daw ang lasa dun sa kanila, so they always ask us to buy stuff.  Hello, ang laki kayang abala?  Also, they ask for the receipt.  Like tutubuan namin sila.  They've even taken it to an all new level...internet shopping. So abono kami lagi.  At eto pa, minsan di sila clear sa gusto nilang ipabili, so minsan mali yung nabibili namin (pabili daw ng so and so brand ng vitamins, so namili ako ng so and so brand ng vitamins, tapos di pala yun ang gusto, yung kulay purple daw na bottle -- note na walang purple na bottle na minention at any point in our previous conversations ha?  So ibabaliik pa namin sa malayong ibayo yung so and so brand ng vitamins.

4.  They feed my baby stuff na explicitly pinagbabawal ko.  So they go against my requests and subo sila ng subo ng Cheetos or Doritos or kung ano mang junk food sa anak ko.  I'm not against junk food per se, but I want to establish good eating habits muna for my baby kasi bata pa sya.  When he's older, obviously, he will get exposed to junk food, but I'm hoping na he'll eat them sparingly (or at least still try to eat a little healthier).  Yung isa kong pamangkin, pinapainom nila ng Diet Coke against their daughter's wishes.

5.  Nagyaya mag-vacation, gusto daw sumama sa amin sa vacation namin ni SIL and her family (SIL is their daughter).  Since may kids kami ni SIL, we booked 2 rooms sa hotel to accommodate each of families.  Gusto daw sumama, so okay, I tried to book them a hotel room.  Pinagtaasan ako ng boses ni MIL when she found out.  Di daw nila kaya magbayad ng separate hotel room, since madami pa daw gastos when we get to our destination.  Dapat daw malinaw ang usapan if they are expected to pay.  So, sabi ko, sige, they can stay with us (it will be tight squeeze, but may sala naman yung hotel room and it converts to a queen bed, so it will be okay).  Guess what?  Nagalit husband ko sa akin for even thinking na his parents will be sleeping in the living room.  Dapat daw sila sa room, kami sa living room.

Since I married my husband, we've had a great several years, then it got really rocky.  Maraming factors of course, and among them is yung difference ng opinion namin ng husband ko sa MIL ko.  I feel trapped.  I feel like my husband is always on their side, so I feel that I have to make my point more by digging my heels even deeper.  Meaning pag may pinagtatalunan kami (usually involving them), I fight harder kasi sino pa ba naman ang magfi-fight for my family's rights?

Friends, I don't know what to do.  I tried talking to my husband, pero since this is a long-standing issue, automatic na yung response nya to shut me down everytime we try to broach this topic.  Ganon din ako, I don't like myself na nga kasi yung reaction ko sa kanila is not very nice...kasi nga nagpatong-patong na.

I prayed hard, too, kaso parang yung stubborness ko and yung long-standing reaction ko pa din yung nangigibabaw, kaya di ko pa siguro marinig yung answer ni God sa akin.

Gusto kong pumunta sa marriage counselor/therapist to help me.  Kasi nasa point na ako of giving up on my husband.

:(

^ sis, as you have said from the start strained na relationship mo with your MIL and even after years of marriage you still don't like her so i don't think that will change anytime soon. So the best thing you can do is to deal with her as humanely and respectful as possible.

So kahit may susi sila, di sila basta basta makakapasok sa house nyo.

About sa phone, i know may control naman sa volume ang mga phone so you can lower the volume para di madisturb ang anak mo.

Sa pagpapabili nila, either don't tell them where you are going or let your hubby worry about it. Siya bumili, hindi ikaw so you are not stressed.

Sa unwanted feeding nila ng junk foods, if they visist your son kapag wala kayo dun then don't stock up on junk foods so they have to make an effort pa to bring it. If during family gatherings, during feeding time be in-charge of your son's meal.

During vacation, if may extra money kayo then get them their own room na lang. I'd rather spend than stress myself. Sabihin mo na lang kay hubby mo na ayan may extra gastos kayo because of his parents.

Don't let them control your married life. Ipag-pray mo na lang sila and yourself for God tp give you more patience in dealing with them.

Ok, Sis, this is a good forum for "venting". But I hope you don 'to think that "venting" = agreement with you.

When faced with what is undesirable in one's life, the first question to ask is:  "What is within my control?"

Your biyenans will not change for you.
Your husband has made it very clear that you are not to go against his parents' preferences.
You want to stay happily married to your husband? You want to have less stress/tension in your marriage? Then, choose your battles; don't sweat the small stuff; suck it up.

Learn from your irritating experiences with them.  Change what is within your control:  your attitude & patience.
I am not saying ikaw ang mali or may pagkukulang. No.  But --  they & your husband are your Reality.   Nobody has a perfect life.

1.  "Necessary Evil"?  Don't be harsh:  maybe it is more apt to use the label:  Necessary Inconvenience.  To lessen your grrrrrr:   Focus on the benefits of the "necessary" .  Read others' problems with in-laws here, yours aren't that GRRRRRR.

2.  When the baby is asleep:  switch off the phone's ringer. All landline units & cellphones have that "Mute" feature.   Why didn't you think of this before?

3.  Next time, get their order specs very very detailed & clear.   Do not assume.  Tell them to send you a photo of the exact item they want.     There's Viber:  when in doubt, photograph the item available -- and do not buy until they confirm it.
Don't take offense at their need for receipts -- it is not necessarily  a reflection on you. They may just be keeping track of the prices they order regularly, and be using these price records for price comparison or budgeting of future expenses.
As for you ordering & getting no receipt: hahaha.  May konting kupit siguro -- let it go.  Better yet, do not order; pero parinig mo what pasalubong you want.  Lol

4. Junk food? Perhaps, when they drop by to visit  -- unahan mo na. Hand to them healthy snacks you want the kid to consume. Say thanks to their junk food, and tell the kid he can eat it when ubos na his home snacks.  That way, you can control the quantity of junk he eats.

5.  Any vacations/trips or family events -- be better prepared with the costs involved. Before finalizing, make it clear --  magkano and who will pay, magkano partihan sa gastos?  Do not assume.

I agree with your hubby, you should have offered the room to the oldies to occupy,   not the living room pull-out bed.   Out of consideration and respect for oldies, it's our culture.

You say your marriage is "rocky" now.  IMO, given your cuento -- it isn't the in-laws making it rocky. IMO, you and your husband have deeper unresolved issues than those petty irritations his parents foist on you.   Expand your patience, choose your battles.   In the grand scheme of your marriage -- they are not gonna be the reason for the break-up of your marriage.  Dealing with them with more patience & positive creativity will lessen the tension between you & your hubby.  So you 2 can have  1 less area of miscommunication, resentment or  confrontation.

If your marriage is "rocky", you want your in-laws on your side, believe me.
Play your cards well.

And at the end of the day, nakakainis. hehe

Pero now na kilala mo na ang MIL mo, you can always make iwas naman sa mga hindi importanteng occasions.

Tsaka sa pagpapabili, kapag nangyari iyan sakin, sometimes I don't mention it pagbalik ko.  If ever they follow up, sasabihin ko I was busy at di man lang ako nakapunta in places other than the office or hotel. Or kapag nalaman nila gumala ako, sabihin mo wala kang nakitang ganun. Period. no questions ask.  When I travel, I usually buy lang sa mga pabili kung hindi hassle.  Say kung nakita ko talaga na on the way or kung may free time talaga ako, puede pa. Pero not to the point of stressing myself para lang may maibili for them. I think advancing the money sa mga pabili mo is just right. Or if ever kelangan talaga, idaan mo nalang sa hubby mo.

Sa mga vacations naman, puede nga book them extra room, pero maghati nalang si SIL and hubby mo to pay for the room.

And the most important thing in your post TS, is yung issue ninyo ni hubby.  Learn to be more patient, tuwing nanggigigil ka, isipin mo nalang na it is because of your in laws kaya andyan ang hubby mo, it is because of their upbringing sa hubby mo kaya mo nagustuhan hubby mo. Instead of complaining your inlaws to your hubby.

Hi sis, I feel your inis sa in-laws mo hehe but I think there are things that we can and cannot control kaya concentrate on things that you can control. Its good too that you vent it out here kaysa mag lash out ka sakanila or to your hubby.

Letting themselves in? tsk problem nga yan since privacy nyo yan,, napanood ko sa Keeping up with the Kardashians yun ganyang episode na pakielamera kasi Kris at may susi sya sa bahay nila Kourtney. The guy changed the locks and confronted Kris but it gave her heartache and left a bitter taste, I think you should not change the knob itself but mag add ng lock,, then If they ask why then tell them that may series of theft or you are just keeping your self secure, if they ask for a duplicate key then delay it as much as possible or if makulit talaga eh put a lock na yung parang may chain etc, hinde nila mabubuksan from outside, if hubby asks why you got one of those tell him nakuha mo sya free sa ace hardware or may ng bigay sau na free kasi may extra sila lols

Nag comment si MIL ko before bakit daw hinde ko sinasagot yung phone ko, lols eh pinapaliguan ko yung bata, may masasabi pa ba sya dun? tss, As much as possible I let my husband deal with the phone calls, as in sya ang sasagot ng phone pag sila tumatagaw or nag text ifforward ko skanya at sya mag reply. Pag wala na talaga edi ako sasagot at sasabihin ko na sige sabihin ko kay husband,, be transparent as possible at I veer mo sa husband mo. If the incessant ringing bothers you/baby then make sure it bothers your husband too,NOT from your nagging ha but from them calling the phones. Pag nilagay mo sa silent mode yung phone at walang sumagot eh mag ttext yan at matututo nayan mag text pra saguting nyo yung phone. Pag nag react na "paano pag may emergency hinde nyo sasagutin?" let your husband deal with it, have them call your husbands cellphone and tell them that is the best way to contact you guys. Word of caution: pag nakita ka nila na hawak hawak mo lagi phone mo, baka isumbat nila yun.

"Medyo nawalan ako ng respect sa kanya kasi may history sya na greedy sa money (even at the expense of her other kids), and also, materialistic (kailangan malamangan nya lagi yung mga anak nya and kakilala -- that's very important to her).  To be honest, it shouldn't bother me, but it does kasi my husband expects me to respect her, and treat her as I do my own mom.  I want to respect her, but I'm having a hard time knowing what I've seen and observed. "

Its sounds to me that they are passive aggressive AKA Crazy makers. Wala kang tama na ginawa dahil they are committed to misunderstanding you, as you said may trait si MIL na dapat sya ang nakakalamang,, its a weakness sis and use that to your advantage. They are the type who likes to win battles but not the war since what they are doing is pushing people away with their demands at mas nakakka turn off pa dahil they are material demands. They try their best to and going far as to "eeep!" ask for a loan just to fund their sh!t (Shopping spree, travel, parties etc.).

I have a question sis,, Do they borrow money from you or your husband?

.  ITS HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO MANAGE HIS PARENTS BECAUSE HE BROUGHT THEM WITH HIM WHEN YOU GOT MARRIED,, VICE VERSA,, ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MANAGE YOUR SIDE OF THE FAMILY. I learned that advice from DR.

Pinag-dasal ko na talaga 'to, for strength of character, for more patience, for tolerance, for wisdom, for peace, for everything.  The main source of my inis, I think, is the fact that I can't control my reaction/s.  Alam ko, never akong mananalo sa situation ko (kasi nga there are a lot of things I can't control here), and even if I win, so to speak, talo pa din ako kasi for sure magkaaway na naman kami ni hubby.

Re: our phone, I tried to turn off the ringers sa phone namin once, kaso nagalit si hubby and minasama nya (bakit ko daw in-off yung ringers, e alam ko naman daw na tumatawag yung family nya.  My family lives in another country, and we usually Skype instead of talk on the phone.).

Re: our vacation, medyo expensive kasi yung extra hotel room (for 7 days it's going to be around $1,000), kung may extra $$$ nga lang kami, I considered it na din, pero syempre di pa naman ako nanalo sa lotto...

I'm not against offering our room sa in-laws ko per se, I just found it off-putting kasi parang expected nila yun as their due, parang entitled ba sila dun.  Sabi ko nga, iba siguro feeling kung I can respect them (mas bukal sa loob ko), kaso...alam nyo na.

Re: pabili, yung hubby ko kasi, di nya alam yung mga stuff (usually, pambabae kasi, or grocery).

Re: junk food, sometimes we're at parties kasi, so wala kami sa bahay...they will be eating chips or something, the kids will come up to them (syempe, curious yung mga bata), then susubuan na lang nila or papainumin ng soft drinks.

@aquacharly and mslcgrey, marami kaming unresolved issues ni hubby, pero I think nagsimula talaga yung issues namin sa relationship ko with my in-laws.  I need to find out within myself if it's all worth it.

@patriciaheart, my hubby does not believe his family needs "managing."  He thinks the sun rises and sets on them...
They don't borrow money from us, as far as I know, pero they expect "freebies" (like free sila sa vacation, free na sa contributions sa mga hati-hating expenses during vacation, etc).  Lagi kaming lugi sa exchange rate pag nagpapapalit sila ng money sa amin (we're earning a foreign currency), may patong lagi yung price ng pabili namin sa kanila (for their gas and pagod daw), pero if we try to do the same thing -- watch out!!!

It helps me to know that you're there to listen, kahit di nyo ako kilala, you take time to respond.  It means a lot, kasi wala akong masabihan nitong mga issues ko. :(

Hugs, sisses.

^i think the problem is your husband. Not your MIL.

Sabi ko nalang sa sarili ko, hay salamat I'm so over that stage. But I used to be in your shoes din.

On junkfood, train your kids. That is bad to your health.  So pag may nag offer sa kanila, sila mismo ang aayaw. Tutal ikaw lang naman ang kasama ng kids mo day in and day out di ba? So trainable iyan. I remember one time my daughter, binibigyan ng cousin ko ng Lay's.  Sabi ng daughter ko, ayaw ko, not good daw iyan for kids. Sabi ng daughter ko, huwag! how about for mommy? hehe  ;D

;D  I think it takes some honing of your skills sa pagrarason, pag nasanay ka na, you would master it anyway. :)
Oo, hindi sya masyadong healthy, but it is better this way.

Di na bale, I suppose they would not double the amount naman.  Next time if you really feel bad about it, huwag ka na pabili.

Re free vacations, nakow, super relate ako dyan. After awhile, natuto nadin akong mag lie low. So since they have to  plan na, sila nalang gumastos. Tapos there are times gusto mo kayo lang family bonding. So talagang for x number of persons lang (kayo ni hubby + kids).  hehe

I am sure you can maneuver your way around situations. Be creative lang.  Tapos iwas ka makipaghead on.  Kasi matanda na sila, kahit san anggulo mo tingnan, hindi mo puede sila awayin.  Alam mo at the end of the day, kahit hiwalay na kami ng hubby ko, may inlaws still misses me ha. On top of all that conflicts.  Kasi nga iwas ako when you feel tensions.  Make them feel loved, tapos love them like your own parents, or sige a little less than your parents hehe.  I am sure they can love you better than what they currently do (maybe not the same level as their kids, pero kahit papano better).

And tama ka, learn to be more patient, for the sake of your marriage.

Call kami sino daw yung +63916......? Sabi namin cellphone no. ko yun di international yon, ayaw niya maniwala.

At since hindi nya ako matanong bakit ako nasa bahay nila ate ako, that witch with the capital B,  asked his son.. The brother in law that I never liked, why I was there, and what I did.( kailangan talaga malaman ang bawat kibot eh!) so bro in law asked the yaya! Kahapon, I went to my sister's house. I gave her my most sarcastic smile!  And if she thinks, papa apekto ako sa pagsusumbong niya.. Watch out! Mas lalong magpapakita ako sa kanila ate! Mamatay siya sa inis!! Atakihin siya sa bwisit sa akin! Painisan ba?

Yung alam kong kina iinisan nila, mas lalo ko pang gagawin!:) since nag umpisa sila mang inis... Papatayin ko sila sa bwiset!:).
At since si MIL ni ate, sinumbong ako kay BIL( anak niya na asawa ni ate) na nasa bahay ako at inexaggerate pa na LAGI daw akong nasa house nila ate, kahit 2x pa lang naman ako nag pupunta that time.. The more na magbababad ako sa house nila ate! Humanda kayong lahat! Di ko man kayo pansinin...
