Wala rin akong nakikitang masama sa sinabi ni lea. very frank lang talaga sya kesa naman mag pretend sya na it's ok to be called tita pero deep inside naiinis sya. tayo rin naman minsan di ba marami sa atin ang naiinis pag tinatawag na ate sa iba it's a sign of respect pero hindi nila alam that they make the person uncomfortable. There are times that you don't want to be reminded all the time that you are older lalo na siguro sa kanila since they are artist. Sa office nga minsan kahit paulit ulit ko nang sabihan na it's ok if you call me by my first name yung iba ate pa rin nang ate kahit nakonting years lang gap namin  may tumatawag pa ngang ate sa akin na mas matanda sa akin. Siguro nainis na rin sa lea sa paulit ulit na pagtawag nang tita kaya nag post na sya. Pwede naman kasi nilang tawagin na miss lea kung ayaw nila na lea lang. Sa US nga kahit boss na mas matanda first name ang tawag.

I like Lea Salonga and I think she is one of the few world class talents the Philippines has produced. But I have to admit, I am a bit turned off by her latest statement. First of all, calling someone Tita is a sign of respect in our culture. Mas ok naman to be extra careful and be extra polite instead of the opposite which is when someone is too informal and presumida and calls you by your first name. I had a 15 year old boy, son of my friend, call me by my first name once and I was a bit taken aback.

I like the fact that Lea is "real" but there is a fine line between being real and being tactless. I think she crossed it, in this instance.

And I don't buy the whole "sanay sa American culture" argument. Eh she doesn't live in the US anymore and she grew up HERE in the Philippines, NOT the US, so she should know our culture uses the term "Tita" as a general sign of respect.

Kaya nga, I really do not like American values shoved here since in their culture, arrogance is a sign of strength and confidence. In Asia, that is a sign of rudeness.

Please enlighten me, what's so arrogant/mataray with Lea's tweet? The first word she used was PLEASE and the message was clear and rather straightforward. Is her tone and message abrasive, or we Pinoys are just so used to people sugarcoating their statements (or just sucking it up to avoid offending other people's sensibilities)?

In our culture, calling anyone older than you "Tita" is a basic sign of respect.
Often you use "Tita" as a default sign of respect even if the person you are addressing is only a few years older. What other terms can we use pa ba in our culture?
"Ate" is less formal, and the use of "Ate" could be interpreted as feeling-close.

Many times, even if the person you are addressing is only a few years older, people use Tita by default (I do it) because I would rather be on the safe side and be extra cautiously polite.

Eh di bakit hindi niya i-clarify how she wants to be called? Miss Lea? Madame Lea? Mrs. whatever her husband's last name is.

I think it is apparent Lea has issues or insecurities about her age, that she can take something as innocent and non-malicious term like "Tita" and feel slighted.

Lastly I don't think we Pinoys expect others to sugar coat their statements or be polite for the sake of being polite.

Perhaps the reason people are reacting negatively to Lea is that she is taking what is a very innocent AND COMMON term of respect and acting like it's being used as an insult, stemming from what appears to be her own personal insecurities about older age.

the person/people i call tita eh yung mga tita is yung mga siblings ng parents ko and relatives, parents ng mga friends ko, friends ng mga magulang ko at mga amiga.  i don't call somebody a few years older than me tita or even ate lalo nat hindi ko kilala.  at nakakataas ng kilay ang mga tumatawag sa akin ng ate na iilang taon lang ang agwat namin.  why? bakit mo ako tatawagin tita?? magkakilala ba tayo?? are we relatives in some way??  ako ay laking Pilipinas din, walang ibang lahing dugo.  ang mga culturang tinuro sa inyo ay naturo din naman sa akin.  pero yung tatawagin mo ang isang tao na iilan lang ang taon ang itinanda sa akin, lalo nat hindi ko kilala, i call them mam, or miss.  hindi dahil i dont respect them, ito ay dahil yun ang mas tama para sa akin.  graduate sa catholic school, hindi naman tinuro sa akin na tawagin ko ng tita ang mas matanda sa akin.  i used tita, ate sa paraan na kung ano yung mga tinuro sa akin. ate sa mga mas nakakatanda sa akin, tita sa mga auntie ko, dun ko ginagamit kasi yun ang tinuro sa akin. 

it's not really the american thing, ito ay yung kung ano ang pagpapalaki sa iyo at kung ano ang tinuro sa iyo.  kung paano ka pinalaki at i-instill yung mga tinuro sa iyo at gamitin mo sa tingin mo kung ano ang tama at mali. kaya wala akong nakikitang pagkaarrogante or maarte sa statement ni lea.  tama  naman ang statement nya, bakit mo syang tatawagin tita, kamag-anak mo ba sya?? tita mo ba sya talaga? close ba kayo to call her tita??  i think it more correct to call somebody naman you don't know or kilala but not close na miss or ma'am. 

mali ba ang naituro sa akin nuon?? or iyon na ba ang itinuturo sa mga paaralan ngayon??  really, medyo shocked ako at madaming violent reaction sa sinabi ni lea, na i don't think na kareact-react naman.  kaya nagtataka talaga ako. enlighten me please?

Oh I would say the same thing if someone just a tad younger than me call me tita. I'll be like "nang iinis kaba?" It's not a sign of respect at all. More like reminding someone that you look older than your age. Kasi halos magka edad lang kayo sabay tingin sayo tita? Heller?! I even got pissed when a sidecar driver who's obviously older than me called me 'ate' .

Re Lea : For me, Keri lang, walang masama, marami kasing pinoy na sensitive masyado kaya kapag prangka ka or straight to the point,  iba agad ang dating sa karamihan.

Siguro kung may kasamang mura ang sinabi nya, yun ang masama for me.
