Hi girls! Just for the fun of sharing lang, here's my engagement ring story:
Even before my fiance actually popped the question, I had a feeling he was gonna propose (this was about a year and a half ago haha). A year's passed since then and nothing's happened yet so I did what I never thought I would do: I started dropping hints all over the place hahaha So basically I've been telling him what I want in a ring, and this is what happened:
Criteria 1: CutWhat I asked: I wanted an emerald cut. I've always thought it's classy and fits my personality well (all the online quizzes I can find and answer attest to that haha). I don't wear jewelry (before he put the ring on my finger, it's always just been my watch and a nondescript pair of earrings), and my style's always been very simple (much to the chagrin of my fashion-forward mom and sister haha). So that's what I told him: Darling, I want an emerald cut diamond. (okay, I don't really call him darling. haha)
What he got: My fiance, bless his heart, got me a round brilliant. Even though his sister insisted that he follow what I wanted, he did not want to give me a 'manang' ring (Yes, this is an insult to the cut but not an insult to me. I readily admit I am very manning-like hehe) and that he wanted the ring to sparkle (Yes, my fiance, a boy, wants sparkle). I did feel uncomfortable with it at first but got used to it naman after a few weeks

it's a gorgeous gem and watching the light and colours move around it is a guilty pleasure of mine haha
Criteria 2: CaratWhat I asked: When I first started dropping these hints, I would say I'd love a 1.5 carat diamond, to which he would raise his eyebrows and say 'you don't know what you're talking about' (he's right actually; being completely and blissfully ignorant of these things, I just threw that number around haha). It wasn't until my mom had me try her jewelry to wear to a friend's wedding (which is incidentally how he got my ring size to begin with) did I realise that not only is 1.5 carats wide enough to full cover my ring finger, it really was too showy for me. So after the said wedding, I turned to him and said 'okay, 0.75 carats' hahaha
What he got: He got me a 0.6 carat centre stone. A leettle under what I asked but I'm very happy how its proportions match the width of my ring finger. The fact that stone itself is flawless is enough for me to disregard this requirement altogether. The size isn't at all ostentatious (which is how he wanted it to be: he said it's small enough for me to wear it everywhere I go). Unfortunately it's so sparkly I try not to wear it whenever I fly home to Manila
Criteria 3: StyleWhat I asked: I wanted a solitaire. Well, the original plan was to have it at 0.75 carats, which would be wide enough for my finger haha Plus, I do not subscribe to coloured stones. While I agree that they are beautiful, I'd just prefer a colourless stone so it's easier to match with what I pull out of my closet at any given day.
What he got: While the centre stone is a colourless diamond, he had two topaz 'bodyguards' (his words not mine) guarding it. This is my birthstone and he says that this makes the ring more 'mine' (I didn't have the heart to tell him any girl born in November can claim it as 'hers' haha In any case they'd have to pry it off me first lols) Although I personally am not a fan of my own birthstone (hehe), he did have a point na it matches my for-everyday watch, which is two-tone. And they're not big-sized 'bouncer' (yes, his words again not mine) stones so the yellow colour is not very noticeable. When you look carefully, the yellow actually helps emphasize how clear the actual diamond is. So in fair sa magiging asawa ko, good job nga hahaha
So that's it. It's all quite funny how my fiance did not listen to a single thing I said. But I realize: all my demands were made on the basis of what I thought I knew about stones and what I thought I wanted out of them. I've seen a lot of our GT sisters say (and rightfully so!) that this is not about the ring but about your husband-to-be's efforts.
What I would like to add though is this: this is about us too. What may be a perfect ring for one bride is not necessarily so for another. There are 4 Cs in diamond shopping and which C to prioritize varies with each girl. Let's all just hope that our partners know us enough (and in my case know me better than I thought I knew myself!) to get the ring that's perfectly suited to us
