bakit uso ang tutors sa chinese schools?
« on: February 23, 2014, 01:49:15 pm »

i came from a chinese school sa manila area. school-tutor kasi ang systema doon.

we live near Grace Christian School. kaso ganyan rin e. school-tutor rin doon.

ayoko naman sa St. Jude kasi sobrang hirap daw. kawawa naman ang bata (for me lang ito ha)

^^^I don't think that would be possible, first Chinese is a foreign language and a child will have difficulty in understanding the language, not unless the parent is well versed in the language, then no need for a tutor.

As for the part where learning could not be in the form of the traditional way ( classroom - tutor ) that would be difficult, I haven't encountered a Chinese progressive style of teaching yet.

^thank you!

Most kids think that studying Chinese is useless, hindi kasi pinapakita ng school ang importance of learning the language to catch the interest of the students. Learning the language takes patience and understanding, putting the language to use is also important like watching Chinese shows and reading Chinese newspapers. As parents, we should also practice them by speaking to them in Chinese, para hindi sila mahiya at maging comportable sila sa pagsalita nito.

For me, I never memorized my Chinese lessons before, I made it a point to understand the lesson and use my own words in Chinese to express what I learned. I graduated from a traditional Chinese school, but I still know my Chinese and I could speak fluent Mandarin.

Joining educational tours like in China and Taiwan could also help one in appreciating your roots.

^May I know which chinese school you're from?

I agree with you that studying chinese takes a lot of effort but in the end, it end up as useless because students don't have a chance to practice and upskill their knowledge.

That's why for me, when my son reach school age, I will not let him study in chinese school.  Waste of effort, time, money and might have him lose focus on other important english subjects because sometimes chinese teacher tends to pressure and uses fear to teach chinese.

Most of my Nephews and Nieces studying/graduate of St. Jude, they usually go home 10PM from their tutor, reason why they went home late is because of their chinese subjects.  Mind you, whether they perfect their Chinese, it will not merit in their entrance exam in Ateneo, UP, Lasalle.  So why bother?

Lastly, we don't plan to go to China as sooner or later these Beijing folks will be all over the country either by force (war) or legal/illegal Immigrants (168 mall)

m_lim, I wouldn't send my kids to St. Jude as well, walang buhay and kawawa lang sila. I know kids who go to tutor every weekend pa and inaabot sila ng 12mn.

I know a few kids from my sister's batch who transferred to Chinese International School and they had tutors when they were in ICA/XS but when they transferred, even the naughtiest one didn't have a tutor and would study by herself. They are all now in either Canada or US for university.

SJCS alumnus here, I've studied Chinese lessons for 13 years in school, one thing I can say is the Chinese lessons I learned have served me well.

Those who say "mahirap sa SJCS" you're right there, but once you graduated, you reap the rewards. Those who stay with their tutors until 12mn are clearly not paying attention in class. Who would want to stay for another 7 hours of tutorials after 9 hours in school? The key here is pacing, lessons in Chinese go for a week before a quiz, it's up to you to pace your studies, problem is a lot of kids cram and don't take their studies seriously. When I was still a Judenite before, I also have a lot of questions in my mind: Why study all of this? Are these relevant? Those were quickly answered when I graduated. The work ehic and the discipline I got from my alma matter have helped me through college and life. Btw, I survived my SJCS days without a tutor.

I have also seen Chinese International School Manila's Chinese curriculum, it's more geared towards oral conversation using Chinese Simplified and Pinyin method. Being a graduate of a traditional and "
國音" based school, I only need a little adjustment to get accustomed to the "简写,拼音", I have helped CISM kids study their Chinese before. I still honestly believe that conversation and writing go hand in hand.

SJCS graduate, yes you don't need Chinese lessons when you take the entrance test of universities but this is a plus factor, kung baga sa bahay, fully furnished na. When I was applying for a job, the HR personnel asked me from what school I graduated from, when I said the name he immediately said: " magaling ka kasi graduate ka doon", that's when I realized all the hard work and hours of studying did not go in vain.

I agree with anslim, pacing lang naman kailangan sa Chinese lessons. Learn, then apply because if not makakalimutan mo talaga. Those who stay long hours in tutorials either don't pay attention in class or simply don't want to study the lessons at all. Those who say SJCS is hard are those who simply can't cope with the standards the school has set.

Congrats pala to my alma matter for topping the NAT's 2013 ( Fourth year in a row.)

It is hard because it concentrates on Chinese education too much. Yes, we don't need it here in the Philippines since we either speak English or Tagalog, it is a plus and it has to boil down to the child if they want to learn or not. I will not sacrifice a child's holistic growth just for Chinese.

Funny, when people find out where I graduate, even without the exemplar Chinese curriculum, they are impressed already. Plus factor pa that I can converse in Chinese.

Other than the chinese lessons, there are other reasons why masmaraming nagpapatutor now than before.

Sa parents, mas maraming busy with businesses/careers, so wala ng time to tutor their kids.

Madalas ko din marinig ang kulang sa patience ang parents so patutor nalang than magaway pa sila ng kids, less stress.

We should also consider the fact that lessons in the english curriculum are much more advanced now, imagine computing for area and perimeter para sa grade 1 math.

Sis m_lim, puwede naman walang hired tutor but as the parent who will help the kid with the lessons, kailangan mo din aralin mga inaaral niya and kailangan talaga ng super habang pasyensya.

My brother is studying in a chinese school, nag papatutor sya sa chinese subjects lang nya since we're not a chinese speaking family. Other than that, hindi na sya nagpapatutor. I guess para lang hindi sya mahirapan sq Chinese subjects nya and mapractice sya, since ayun nga, wala syang makakausap ng chinese sa bahay:)

UNO grad here. Yes, there's a lot of memorization going on in Chinese schools. But I find all that memorization has its long-term benefits.  Everyone from our batch breezed through college entrance exams and college was easy-peasy.  One of the benefits of Chinese schooling, I believe, is the training it gives you - study habits, discipline, conscientiousness - that sort of thing.

Why do they have tutors now? I guess it's because the curricula are more competitive now and the kids have so much more to learn that the teachers don't have time to make sure the students learn the lesson before moving on to the next topic.  So the tutors are there to reinforce.

I teach English to Koreans and all my students go to what they call "academies". It's basically another school that they attend after the official school hours are over.  There, they learn supplementary lessons in English, math, science, etc.  If they don't, they can't get into the good universities.

Is there a progressive Chinese school out there? That I would like to know.

To answer your questions: Yes there are Chinese Schools that uses the bank-street method or the so-called progressive approach to learn Chinese. I am currently an educator in this kind of a school, but if you really want your child to learn I won't suggest you enroll your kids to such, in a progressive school your kids will just be assessed at the end of each quarter/semester, even if your child did not learn anything it's okay because the students learn at their own pace.

I prefer tutors, when required, to preserve my good relations with my kids.  I am a very busy, harassed businesswoman.  I want to relax & laugh with the kids.  Nowadays, subjects are so advanced/more comprehensive vs. my getting simplified approach --- the longer one is in business, lol -- tama my Chinese grandfather's statement: plus-minus lang yan kelangan bantayan.

About progressive schools -- IMO, ok pag pre-school.  After, I prefer the traditional school -- well, hwag a ko barilin but: trad schools reflect the world:  get ahead or  regret it; everything is competitive;  it's a dog-eat-dog world out there.
