Measles Outbreak in Metro Manila...

hi mga mommies, nakakaalarm po ang news na may measles outbreak sa manila at lagpas 1k na ang namatay    in my case, sa January 25 pa nka sched si baby ng vaccine for Measles.. sabi ng pedia nya need pa mag wait ng at least 28 days for the next vacc kasi last vaccine nya was last Dec 21. PCV vaccine naman.. any help/idea pano maiwas si baby na mahawa aside sa wag maglalabas ng house?

If the people in your house were vaccinated against measles, then the only added precaution is to ensure everyone changes clothing and takes a shower as soon as they get home before handling your baby.

I had a scare where my officemate got german measles and I spent the whole day next to him the day before his rashes broke out. I immediately texted me pedia on the chances of my daughter getting it, at the time she was less than a year old pa. My pedia advised what I posted above. No chance of my daughter getting german measles if I was vaccinated and showered/change clothes before handling my daughter.

Keep an eye out nalang for early symptoms of measles or anyone not feeling well at home and keep them away from your baby.

My son has MR vaccine before sya mag-1 yr old. 2 vaccines ba dapat? Naguguluhan ako sa sinasabi ng DOH na 2 vaccines daw for measles?

^sis PCV yung sa baby ko (Pneumococcal Vaccine) last shot na yun, kasi dapat at least 28days daw bago mag inject uli eh  .. anti measle lang pala yung iaadminister sa kanya sa Jan.25 ng pedia nya..

khriseeee, curious on your pedia's advice...does that mean you also had your daughter's yaya/caregiver vaccinated? Of course it's not only you she's exposed to. My concern now is it's back to school and my 6 yo daughter and her yaya spend half a day outside. I'm not concerned with my daughter since her vaccines are complete. I'm not sure Lang with the yaya. Siyempre she doesn't spend the waiting time alone and she definitely interacts with a lot of people there. If nahawa na siya, she brings it in to our home, making everyone especially the kids susceptible. Hay I'm getting paranoid. Well at least my kids are vaccinated so if ever that happens I'm praying the effect won't be that bad.

Definitely no-no for now in crowded places. Last weekend we had despedida in MOA for some balikbayans. Didn't bring my two youngest kids (age 3 & 1 yo). My kids' Lola Pedia has been telling me since time in memorial that malls are cesspools for bacteria and viruses, hindi Lang measles. Lagi akong pinapagalitan if dinadala ko sa malls.

My HS friend who is a doctor volunteers in Tondo (I think this was the project of the group of physicians in private practice). She's saying the situation is really bad and expect it to get worse.

sis nakakaalarm naman yan and it's in the news na kasi, pray pray lang talaga at tripleng ingat sa babies natin, na guilty nga ako bigla kasi sinama ko pa sa mall si baby last sunday tapos nag poop so need ko pa linisan sa CR.. pwede p ba maulit ang measles once nagkaron na before?

No, I did not get my yaya vaccinated as she usually stays at home with my daughter. My daughter hardly goes out so I thought it was low risk. But come to think of it, it would be a good idea to have yaya vaccinated esp if you have a school-age child and an infant.

Just brought my son too last Monday for his well baby checkup & last shot of IPD. I was also warned by the pedia na wag muna masyado igala sa baby especially sa malls & parks dahil sa feb pa ang shot nya for anti-measles. 5 patients nya ang by that time na may measles sa Fe Del Mundo at naka-admit.

Kahit daw sya mismo nakalimutan na nya ang itsura ng measles sa tagal na nyang huling nag-handle.  The last time daw ay mga 5 yrs ago at isa lang. Ngayon ang dami talaga. His first patient was about 2 weeks before the news came out. At sunod sunod daw talaga.

Sia joevicko, i read na once na nagkaroon lifetime immunity na yun. Pero 2 kinds of measles ha, measles (rubeola) and rubella (german measles). Magkaibang strain of virus sila.

Yung sa vaccine naman, pwede pa din magkaron kahit may vaccine na kasi pwedeng hindi naimmune yung system ng katawan fully. Pero lesser na yung effect. Nagresearch ako kasi nagkaron si hubby tapos

I heard din kasi na madami namamatay sa Tigdas/Measles not because of the Measles itself but because of the complications which is Pneumonia. nanghihina ang immune system at tinatamaan ang baga, super affected ba ang mga babies kahit complete na ang series of vaccines na PCV (Pneumoccocal VAccine)?

For Filipino infants, the recommended number of doses for Measles vaccine is as follows:

6 to 9 months of age - Measles vaccine
12 to 15 months of age - 1st dose of the MMR vaccine (Measles, mumps, rubella)
4 to 6 years of age - 2nd dose of the MMR vaccine (may be given earlier according to the CDC website as long as 2nd dose is given at least 28 days after the 1st dose)

Vaccinated patients can still get infected, but symptoms are milder, duration is shorter and there is a lesser chance of complications so it is better to get vaccinated than risk the complications of measles. Even adults who have not had measles can get vaccinated.

Immunity is lifelong once you get infected.

^ thanks for this info. Nakahinga na ako ng maluwag when I checked my son's baby book. Meron na sya measles vaccine and yung last well baby check up namin nung Nov., napa-vaccine na rin namin sya ng MMR. Siguro nga doble ingat nalang.

Siguro iwas muna kami sa malling ni hubby. Bukod sa magastos eh iwas pa sa sakit.

Doc Lelet, would you know how long this outbreak would last at kung kailan ang peak/saturation point? May projection po ba ang medical community?

Also, would someone with lifelong immunity possibly be a virus carrier? I have had measles as a child; if I was exposed now to someone with measles, I wouldn't get sick, but is it possible for me to infect someone else?

Just went last night sa ER ng Medical City ortigas.

My god kaliwat kanan ang mga batang naka confine due to measles.

Pati mga nurse and doctors nakasuot ng face mask. Bakit kaya nagkaron ng ganitong epidemic?

^cause a lot of parents didn't have / forgot to have their kids immunized. And with our densed population, it is no surprised how it quickly spread.

Sabi ng DOH ang measles outbreak na nangyayaring ito sa metro manila ay posibleng dahil sa mga taong lumikas galing samar na biktima ng yolanda pati yung galing zamboanga at mga ifugao na dumadayo tuwing pasko. Mahina daw kasi ang vaccine drive sa visayas at mindanao.

^ I am so worried about this nga. even if my daughter has complete vaccinations, you can never remove the possibility that she can pick up viruses here and there. and when the epidemic is something that is potentially fatal, the worrier in me gets worse.

we don't let my kid go to the village playground/park muna, and we minimize the visits to malls with her. if at all, we try to go to less crowded places and are in and out quickly. pag grocery, shop agad then leave. wala na muna yung walking around and finding other activities. it's good din because my daughter just recently turned 2 so we still treat her like a baby and take great lengths to make sure that everyone who handles her is clean, illness-free and healthy.

would you guys know how much and measles vaccine for adults and if anytime pwede ako magpa-inject sa yaya? she said she was vaccinated when she was young daw sa health center, but im still keen to have the adults vaccinated.

I'm so worried now. My mom called me this am that my cousin is positive with measles. With all the reunions over the holiday I'm getting paranoid tuloy. Kept thinking if he carried ba any of my kids
