I'm not yet married, but if ever my husband ask me to stop working i will have second thoughts.
In my opinion, okay lang naman na tumigil ka mag work for the sake of your child at hinde ka dapat mahiya sa hubby mo kasi para sa child nyo naman yun.
Pero sis, stop working will not guarantee your child to be the top of the class and its so early to tell now coz she is just 5 y/o.

As what other sis and bros said, wala naman sa yaya yung magiging values ng anak, at the end of the day ikaw pa din ang mother so nasa sayo pa din yun kung pano mo sya papalakihin.
Yaya is just there to look after her with your absence but values and teaching her will still come from the parents.

My brother and sis-in law are both working, nakaya naman nila palakihin yung mga pamangkin ko w/out yaya but my mom is there to look after them when they are working.
They take turns on teaching their kids and their kids turns out okay sa school, hinde nga lang top one pero nasa top 10.

If you will have a peace of mind by quiting your job, its still your decision. Good luck sis!

Sis, I saw this post of yours. With your story, ako ang natatakot for you if you totally resign.

When my husband cheated on me, I was looking at successful marriages like my mom's and mom in law. I DID consider being a SAHM.  Sabi ko baka lalo nya akong mahalin etc etc.  But I did not push through with it. I thought to myself, buti nalang.  Kasi nalibang din naman ako sa labas and earned well kahit papano. Siguro if not for my work, I would not have kept myself sane with my philandering ex.

As for your reasons why you should be a SAHM, pag ayaw maraming dahilan, pag gusto, maraming paraan.

Hndi naman syempre didisiplinahin ng yaya yung bata in a nice way dahil hindi niya anak yun.

But once you find them, pay them at least double the going rate to maintain them.

Case to case basis din sis, sakin yung mga grandparents pa sometimes ang nags spoil sa kids kasi they raise the kids according to their own. Di mo mapagsabihan ng "rules".  With the yaya, may "rules" naman na puede ifollow, like bawal ito at yun, kaya all she has to do is adhere at pagsabihan o pagbawalan ang bata (pero bawal mamalo).

Precisely why you cannot rely on your mom. Tama sila, invest in a good yaya. Pero having your mom around would always be good as well.

You can always tell your daughter what to do in situations where nab bully na sya.

Maybe kelangan nyo muna matuto maging independent as a family.

Why?
Nagawa ko namang umattend sa mga programs and competitions ng mga anak ko sa school kahit na may work ako.  I take a leave or something. Kung gusto mo nakatutok ka talaga sa bata, maybe you can find work within your child's school? Or around the area. It is still an alternative.

Only to be let down. Kasi hirap na hirap nangako magluto, tapos pag uwi nya late nanga, busog narin.  Or di kaya, nagmamadali na sasabihin labas daw kami at tomorrow nalang kainin. Without any regard na ang hirap magluto especially for someone like me na hindi marunong magluto.

What I am saying is hindi purkit nagresign ka, at nag aral magluto, eh masasarapan na ang hubby mo sa niluto mo.  Depende sa asawa iyan.

Yup had that in mind as well. But again, kahit pagod, kung gusto ng hubby magbonding din kayo, kahit pa busy ka sa work, both of you should make time.

For me dati kaya nagwork naman ang arrangement na taking care of my kids while I was working kasi I chose a job near my home or the other way around, bahay naman di kalayuan sa work. Tapos flexitime pako sa work. Kaya minsan 10am nag g grocery ako kasama ang maid.  ;D  Tapos I go din sa gym from time to time kasi again, malapit ang gym ko sa work.  Sa traffic sa Manila ngayon, you have to be efficient.  Not necessarily nagmamadali, but getting more things done with the least hassle and effort, and maximize your work-life balance as well.

i'm following this thread ever since it has been posted.

sahm here since we got married in 2011. we have a son who is now 1 year and 8 months old. ldr kami at first then magkakasama na kami ngayon.

at first, nahihiya ako. why? because of pride. baliktad kasi ang situation namin noong mag-bf/gf kami. ako ang mas kumikita. pero nagsikap si hubby and he earns triple than what i used to earn. i worked from home when i was pregnant. pero hindi ko na itinuloy nung nanganak ako.

if you and your husband talked about it, laid all your cards, did the budgeting and expenses, and IF HE AGREED 101%, then by all means go SAHM. as long as kaya mo ang routine na buhay..as long as kaya mo i-set aside ang self-growth mo, ok lang.

but for me, yung mga reasons mo kasi feeling ko magagawan ng paraan..

yung yaya, hanap ka ng trusted na yaya. medyo mahirap pero there are always good yaya around. the yaya of my niece has been with them for already 5 years. mas mahigpit pa nga si yaya kesa sa SIL ko. hindi nya pinapakain ng chichirya or pinapainom ng soda. nasa rules mo rin yun e.

3rd honorable LANG ang anak mo? that means she loves to study. do not pressure her to be on the top, encourage but do not pressure. hindi ka pa ba masaya na nagwowork ka, limited time to teach her and yet she has done great? i'd be so much mayabang na with that achievement! as for ugali, ikaw rin ang magmomonitor non. you will and should always guide her and let her know kung ano ang tama o mali.

your mom's hand is full..kaya nga hanap ka ng trusted na yaya.

you are still your husband's wife. sabi nga, una kang naging asawa bago naging ina. make time for him, for both of you. yung kayong dalawa lang. keep the spark alive. kaya nga tayo ang ilaw ng tahanan, light! spark!

i didn't know how to cook back then. and until now, hindi ako magaling magluto. my husband is a great cook. but he appreciates everything pag naglaro ako sa kusina. madami cookbook dyan. kahit sa internet, dami recipe. start from gisa. hindi naman need na extravagant at gourmet agad iluto mo. kung may passion sa pagluluto, kahit gaano kasimple pa yan, magiging masarap yan.

kuwento ko lang.. my brother and SIL are both working (mataas na position pa talaga). my brother is taking his masterals in dlsu and studying mandarin at UP. they have 2 wonderful girls (5 yo and 1 yo). they have 1 yaya. i don't know how they do it but they can still go out on a date, go out on a date with their 5yo and go out as a family. they get to visit their respective families/relatives on weekends pa! my SIL gets to cook for them lagi. my 5yo niece is top of the class. siguro, their key is GREAT TIME MANAGEMENT and PARTNERSHIP.

masaya rin naman talaga maging sahm. nasa sa iyo how you will use your time and be productive. fulfilling din naman ang pagsilbihan ang pamilya ng buong-buo. and oh, regarding financial dependency, i am financially dependent kay hubby but i don't hide from him the fact na meron din akong sariling savings, may pera ako sa isang business and i/we have a fallback pag nawalan sya ng work. and i'm happy that my husband gives me my monthly allowance, so i still get to save some for myself  :)

whatever your decision, be happy with it. don't rush life. enjoy every minute of it. ask God's guidance. goodluck!  :)

Hehe. And even then I don't think it's too much a cause for concern.

Anyway, from a soon to be married point of view, I think dapat ka lang mahiya sa husband mo (or sa ibang tao) kapag ikaw mismo nahihiya sa sarili mo. If you're too embarrassed to admit you're financially dependent on your husband, then maybe you shouldn't be financially dependent on your husband. If you really don't think motherhood is a worthy and noble cause, worthy of sacrificing any sort of financial or even professional reward, then I'm betting your husband won't think it's a noble and worthy cause either. If, on the other hand, you can proudly say, I'm a stay at home mom and I don't give a flying eff what you all think, then by all means, be a stay at home mom and more power to you, sister!

Whatever you choose, there will ALWAYS be a consequence. It's only time that can tell which one was the best decision.  Sabi rin ni Oprah, you can have it all, just not all at the same time. :) In the end, it's up to you lang kung ano mas kaya mo panindigan. To me, it seems like you REALLY feel it's in your family's best interest that you be a stay at home mom, so then be a stay at home mom, and be the best stay at home mom that you can possibly be. :)

tama kayong lahat..
At mali ako...??
Hahaha
There are ways nga on managing my time being a mom, wife and as a woman without quiting my current job. Baka nga icriticize ni hubby even the smallest thing na bibilin ko from his money. About being my daughter on top of the class, yap right i should be thankful of her achievement.
And accdg to secret no.4: a husband will always feel more of a man when he is fully provides for his wife by his own efforts. A man likes to feel that you really need him. That you are dependent on him. That he is important. He will love you more tenderly and deeply when you are dependent on him.

regarding sa secret no. 4, it's old style, yes, but there are still some men out there na ganyan ang gusto..maging "man of the house." it might not be applicable for you but it might be applicable for some.  :)

^^sis, don't beat yourself up. those were your opinions, and I believe na walang maling opinions. it just so happen that most of our sissies here who have been there were able to offer you what they've been through. it sure helps a lot to hear unbiased opinions from strangers, for me ha, kasi nga since they don't know you or your husband, you're sure na walang side silang kinikilingan.
anyway, sa secret no. 4, it can be taken din naman in a different way. pwedeng hindi lang siya fully dependent financially. let's say when it comes to decision making in family cars, you are fully dependent sa hubby mo. like me, for example. I always make positive affirmations kay hubby how he is so knowledgeable sa cars and kahit anong aral gawin ko I will be fully dependent to him in that area which is a bit of a BS kasi lahat pwedeng pag-aralan kung gugustuhin natin. pero it makes my husband happy. he is happy knowing na there is something na he is an "expert" on that me, his wife, would be eternally grateful of. I always tell him i appreciate his "professional know-how" in cars, what to buy, what to do, and how I would be miserable if hindi siya ang napangasawa ko. he's happy, and I am happy kasi hindi ko na kailangan i-nag na i-check ang car ko and I am sure na hindi ako magkaka-problema on the road.

^Ooops! hahaha! sorry naman! pero think of it this way, she can surely "study" and learn car-ways, but she would rather not coz she's got a very capable husband to do it for her. sure pa kaming mga wives na labor of love talaga ang service na nakukuha ng mga rides namin, oh diba?

Secrets of a Fascinating Wife. I never bothered to read that.  I don't want to fascinate.  I aim to be irreplaceable -- the one he knows he can't live happily without.   The one he will always look for.  Hahaha

This "Dependency-Ego" thing -- I'd rather not propagate. IMO, it's anchored on Power Plays, which really shouldn't be the operating principle of marriages/relationships.  Walang katapusan yan sa cuentahan, sa timbangan..& you may still just end up as: Tinimbang ka't ... kulang! Even after you've done all your bowing & grovelling, & hanging from the chandeliers.

(I prefer to foster the Kindness-Respect equation.  Where there is Kindness and Respect, you are more likely to  find True Love for a spouse, child, parent, sibling, etc.   )

As for Secret No.4, as quoted by TS --  IMO, a man feels even more needed when there's this wife who also pulls her weight in this world, yet needs him around too.  Iba yung, andyan ako with hardly any/no options vs andyan ako though I got other  options.  IMO, I-choose-you is more ego-ballooning than  I-need-you.  (The latter is for scripts of pokz and kab1tches, just IMO. Hahaha). To expound on what AKTHUNG observed:  it is more ego-nurturing for a man to have a wife he can be proud of.

A man who needs his wife down boxed so small as to have her  dependent on him, IMO - does not possess a healthy ego.  Abusers do that: cut their women small, very small, to feel in control.
For me, a man with a healthy ego & authentic confidence is one who lets his wife fly, fly high, & have more colors in her life.
So No.4 just leaves me cold. If my husband should feel his d1ck is bigger only coz  his wallet feeds my small wallet --  heck, he can go have a bigger d1ck with women who can go to sleep nights just pandering to his d1ck.  (errr mornings pala sila tulog. Hahaha)  I will go crazy if I had to live by No.4... Hahaha, but that's just me. What do I know anyway? :D.

sis ankyneMD, di ka naman mali.  You are just throwing out your thoughts on why you are more inclined to drop your job, kasi you have several reasons to do so.  But on the other hand, baka hindi mo naisip ang mga pinopost ng mga sisses natin dito, kaya we are just letting you know the consequences on the other side.

Nabasa ko lang kasi yung e-book na secret of a fascinating wife at habang binabasa ko yun, pinipilit ko iapply sa marriage namin bawat secret na nababasa ko don. Why not ask your hubby to provide for everything kahit may work ka na.  Puede nyo naman pag usapan ulit.  You can always tell him na since you are planning to resign (kahit hindi totoo hehe *evil grin*), baka mas maganda magtrial run kayo na sya lahat sasagot muna ng expenses sa house. And if it works out, "BAKA" puede ka magresign eventually (*evil grin*).  At least you can make him feel manly.

At ikaw naman, continue ka lang to work, save as much as you could na sayo lang.  In case something happens, at least may insurance ka.

But seriously, does a man need to "provide" for his family to make him feel like a man?  Hindi naman di ba? Nasa maturity ng lalaki iyon.  Sometimes I don't like what has been said about this book kasi parang ikaw yung wife na kelangan ka magcirko cirko at magt tumbling tumbling para maging masaya ang emprente mong asawa.  Little do wives forget na kahit anong gawin mong magic at pagt tumbling, kung sira ulo talaga ang asawa mo, wala kang magagawa.

Nope, hindi ka dapat mahiya unless syempre nanghihingi ka ng pera sa hubby or sa partner mo para isustento sa pamilya mo (nanay, tatay and siblings)

Exactly, as GIRLTALKER2 points out.

It is tragic to betray one's true self to fit into another's life.
Now, to be betrayed after all that self-denial and modification --  there can be no greater tragedy than  losing one's self & still, 1 day not knowing why you've landed where you've landed.
So, never lose your essence.

Ok mga books na ganyan, for self improvement (but not for self modification/denial)
But ingest it all with a grain of salt.  Be discerning. Don't swallow it hook-line-&-sinker.

To TS:

Hindi ka naman dapat mahiya. As a couple you work together for better family life. Pero just recently lang, my senior colleagues at work commented na iba na talaga ngayon ang family life and values.

Ako rin lately napapaisip if I need to give up my career para makapag focus sa baby namin. Kasi lately andami nang piles of stress sa work and pagdating pa nga bahay aalagaan pa namin baby namin. I even asked my husband na pag stable na yung salary goals nya maybe I can lie low for a while pero naisip ko rin I am still young and siguro it still would be best pa rin kung pareho kami kumikita. I agree with other gtalkers here na as a woman accomplishment mo rin na may work ka at nag eexcel ka sa field mo. Isa pa mas mabilis makaipon if pareho kayo may work. Hindi rin ako sanay na humihingi or umaasa for my needs. Siguro ngayon na mamanage pa namin yung gastos kasi maliit pa baby namin at kahit papano nakaka-travel pa rin kami pero not unlike before nung mag bf gf kami ni hubby na almost every other week may out of town or gimik.

Anyways, siguro its just a matter of discussion na rin with your husband.

I am associated with someone who stopped working so she could take care of her two daughters, and to be honest, the rest of us did not feel she did the right thing.  First of all, she does not come from a well off family, so to be married to my husband's family and decide to stop working altogether struck a sour note.

If your husband honestly agrees on letting you stay home so you can take care of your kid, I think he would initiate and suggest it to you.  It is not as if your kid is not doing well.  You have to learn how to delegate.  The family dynamic is very similar to an enterprise.  Have you ever seen a successful corporation without employees ultimately working for the big boss.  After seeing some people who have the money but cannot enjoy it kasi they do everything themselves, I made a promise to myself that i will not be like that and be my own person.

Ultimately, you have to make a decision and try to excel with your own career.  Saving more for your future will lessen the stress load from your husband.  You think he won't be worried eventually na wala siyang katulong financially?  When he goes home, what are you going to talk about in the dinner table, that your daughter got a star? Or that you discovered a new recipe?  It is hard to strike a balance and I'm just lucky that my husband respects me enough to let me be my own person.  I am not only a friend, wife, and lover, I am also his business partner and he respects me a lot for that.  The only thing lacking in our life right now is a child, but that's another topic.

Anyway, dapat ba mahiya?  If I were in your shoes, mahihiya talaga ako. I know my husband and his family are very well off.  I could choose to live the life like my mother in law, but no, i chose to be an independent, hopefully more successful businesswoman in the near future.  Hopefully when I have my own daughter or son, they will love and respect me for it.  I want to set a good example for them, although being a mom is a 24/7 job, it should not be our "only" job unless na tamad na tayo to work. Swerte natin mga girls we can always make that excuse.  What kind of mom would you like to be?

^aha! A woman after my own heart.

I am the mom I always wanted to be.    Bilib na bilib nga ko I am the best mom for my kids. Hahaha

I asked hubby just now:
If I quit everything & just stay home for you and the kids -- whatcha say?
Better for your ego?  Will we be happier?

He said the following:

Ang aga aga pa ha.  Sino na kausap mo, ang aga pa?  (Lolz)

Whatcha say? If that's what you want, do it...but I am not asking for it.
We are all happy now, let us keep it that way --  that we are all happy over the long haul.  So it's up to you.  Whatever makes you happy.

My ego?  Hahaha.  Let's just say: I love being with someone with an ego too.
Your ego bigger than mine? Better! Hahaha. (Sabi ko: tse!)

Seriously, I sleep well nights knowing if I don't wake up -- you will be able to very well manage taking over everything.  Masakit isipin if I am not around, everything I and we worked for mapunta lang sa wala.  Ok na alam mo lahat, pano lahat.

         May gusto ka buy?

So, there.  That is our dynamics.   Others have different dynamics, kanya kanya, whatever works.
Ask your husband too

Nung kami pa ng ex ko, I wanted to resign to be able to take care of our family.  Dito siguro ako nagpapasalamat sa kanya as he did not allow me. While at that time we supports the family, sakin lang ang sweldo ko, kaya may naipon din ako to be able to walk away when I was emotionally ready.

His point was, sayang ang mae-earn ko.  But since he is a philanderer, feeling ko lang, he also wants to keep me busy.  Kasi kung sa bahay lang ako, I am sure I can always think of ways to monitor him and think of more things to do against him and the mistress since marami akong oras.

And from 50-50 career vs SAHM, its now 80-20. since gawin ko itong thread na to, at nabasa ko opinion nyo mga mommies, marami ako talaga natutunan at nalaman.
Lahat halos kasi ng mga nakapaligid sakin, none of them is exactly the same as my situation.
My SIL's SAHM na lang din after giving up their career and mag-business na lang.

As I said earlier,  HIYA  is not the issue here -- it gets deeper than that. As you cited:  immersion in family, self development, family finances,  etc etc

IMO, the more promising/bigger the career or business a woman has now  --  the harder it is to  fold in and become a SAHM.

BUT at the same time, being in such a position of authority & means --  the woman has more options & can afford good quality home & support staff.
The power & money make doing more & being more Achievable.  Coz the mundane stuff like cleaning, cooking (I cook only when inspired to do so), laundry, marketing, fetching, etc are delegated well.
The power & money makes it easier & possible to UPGRADE one's quality of life & self positioning in the family & society.

THERE ARE WAYS to have a career/business & time with family.  Our other Sis claim thus too. Kanya kanyang diskarte.
My way:   my kids go from school to our head office to be with us their parents.
My way:  hubby and I go home TOGETHER. We are together almost 18/5 weekdays & min. 20/2  weekends.
So there, a woman with authority/power over her schedule & has financial means, can be more & have more.  Speaking just for myself, had I wanted just a simple life -- nag madre na lang ako. Hehe

Let's be clear on this:  Career or business women nowadays are ALSO hands-on nurturing moms & caring wives.  It is all about time management & having enough brains to think concerns through.
It does NOT follow that a family is nurtured well only by a DAHM.   It is NOT a foregone conclusion that better kids are products only of SAHMs.

As for what our moms were/are -- all I can say is that times have changed, roles are tweaked, much more is expected of us nowadays. Nothing stays the same.

Whatever a woman wants to make of her life -- go......
BUT make your choice with eyes wide open.
Make A Choice based on solid knowledge/information (not on dreams, not on mis-information).

Another thing, be wary of what others say. Sabi nga: Misery loves company.
Think for yourself.

------------//

What can I say but that if it were a sister/daughter considering it -- I would be very afraid for her.

As AKTHUNG said, in different words:  For those who have experienced/seen up close The Journey 1 way or other -- it looks scary.  Hindsight is the best teacher.
