AWOL: Effects on Future Employment
« on: October 08, 2013, 12:34:25 pm »
Here's my problem--been in a Company for less than 8 months and went AWOL. I know I should have given 30 days notice for resignation--I would have but I just cant force myself to go to the office anymore. No, Im not sick or anything health-related ganyan. Its just that I think my work just took its toll on me. Parang I just decided not to work anymore ganon lang. Just thrown in the towel. That time its either go to work everyday or keep my sanity. I choose the latter. I know its the unprofessional way to go, but now I cant undo what's already done.

Now Im depressed kasi nga ayun, when you're not working anymore, not earning your own money tapos even your rent you cannot afford to pay--you only survive on your mother's charity--parang nakakawala ng self respect. Ive been beating myself up for a month already for i dont know, maybe how I handle things. One thing for sure, I dont regret that I got out of the Company itself, only the way i made my exit strategy.

So having said all that, my dillema now is about my work experience in my CV. Since I cant have certificate of employment from that Company, how would I explain that 8 months period? And its my first job actually. In worried baka no companies will take me anymore because of my record.

Sorry if I vent out a little. Just need to let it out I dont know what to do with my life anymore :(

Just don't put it in your CV.  8months is not really an experience worth putting on your CV.  It would only give your headache explaining in an interview why you decided to go on AWOL.  It's much easier to say that you decided to take a time off after studying and had only been hunting jobs ON and OFF before, hence the 8months layoff period.

Next time, just write an irrevocable resignation.  That would be way better than just dropping off the place of the planet.  I did it twice in my previous work.  Both times, instead of signing up for the permanent position, after the probation period, i decided to just resign.  The probation period is both for you and the company.  You to know, if you can work within their boundaries and them to evaluate how good is your great effort.

I usually date my last day after 7days of notice and that i already have another offer with a company i'm transferring too, even if that's not true; and that the resignation was irrevocable.  Talk to your manager or supervisor.  They can't force you to stay if you no longer want too.

^I was going to do that yung irrevocable resignation sana. Parang efective immediately pero the Recruitment personnel insist that 30 days should be given as per our contract or I wont be cleared. Kaya ayun. Hayy..

^--- kung pirmado ng superior mo ang resignation, wala dapat habol si HR sa iyo.  Superior mo kasi ang magkakaroon ng issue kung sino ang gagawa ng trabaho mo sa biglaan mong pag-alis.

Anyways, just don't bother with it.  Experience is only valid kung may kinalaman ba talaga ang next position na applyan mo from your previous one.  If not, there's no point putting it in.  Sa submission na lang ng SSS, Pag-ibig at Philhealth, for HR to know na meron ka na ng mga information na iyon.

Hi Sis, Tama yun advice nila na don't put that work experience in your CV. I've been through same situation narin (AWOL). I didn't put it in my CV nalang.. Now, I'm 1 year na with my present employer. don't worry too much. ok lang yan :)

Here's my dilemma mga sis, I am looking for a job and I went awol not sa prev company i left my prev company gracefully i har clearance so okay yun pero dun sa iba (yes naging hopper ako nung younger days ko) i know na it doesn't look good so i don't want to declare it sa resume ko but what about background checks? yun naman ang worry ko, also makikita rin naman sa records ko so ayun I don't know paano ito :(

Nahihirapan tuloy ako maghanap ng work ngayon.

In my case naman yung sa first job ko yung nag-awol ako (read first post) eh 8 months ako dun. Blame it on immaturity, unprofessionalism etc.. Ang naging problem ko was when applying for jobs after that  eh since hindi ko nga malagay sa resume ko yung 8 months experience, nahirapan akong i-explain tuwing interview yung gap kasi diba nga  naman anong ginawa ko sa 8 months na yun..

I've been regularized in my job now of 6 months. What I did was I never disclosed my first job and told the HR na after the Board exam, I just decided to rest muna for a while and still contemplate on my future plans kasi I was not yet sure what field I wanted to venture into---Audit, Industry & Commerce etc.. Pero kasama din sa 'alibi' ko na though I was not yet employed in a company with a corporate setting, I still do various jobs na related sa profession ko like bookkeeping and taxation for certain people gayan ( yan di yan totoo ha  ;D )

I think the key is that you need to imply to them na may pinagka-busy-han ka in your time na walang declared employment sa resume mo.

Im not an HR personnel pero mapapaisip ka rin naman kung bakit masyadong matagal na nabakante yung isang applicant diba..

Ayoko namang sabihing nag-aaply ako pero di lang matanggap--parang mas panget pakinggan yun.

Kaya ayan mga sisses, kanya-kanyang alibis muna tayo.  ;D

Yes makikita sa requirements nyo yung history ng contributions sa gov't remittances (SSS/PHIC/HDMF) pero our HR naman di na nila tinanong kung bakit may remittance of contribution.

Hi same problem din yung akin. 9 months ako sa CVG-one. Regular employee na din ako nun the problem is nagpull out ng tao sa account ko then nilipat kami ng account so nagtraining ulit kami pero nagconflict yung sched ko sa school and sa training then kinausap ko yung trainer ko nagpapalipat ako ng wave then sabi niya HR will get in touch with you after a week wala pa rin so bumalik ako for an update then sabi nila tatawagan na lang daw pero wala pa rin nakailang balik para sa update pero lagi sinasabi tatawagan ako nagsuplada na ako pero wala pa rin so ininform ko TL ko (dun sa dati kong account) na ilang months na ako nakafloat kaso wala siya magawa kasi mga records ko nasa CVG G5 na so dun daw ako makicooperate nagsawa ako kasi laging tatawagan nakagraduate na ako at lahat lahat wala pa rin. So the problem is nilalagay ko siya sa resume ko then nung natanggap ako, kasama sa requirements yung COE (certificate of emplyoment).

IMO, HR & company policy is followed, not the ok/approval of the superior.  The no. of days' advance notice is for the protection of both the employee & the company:  to allow for an orderly exit and turn-over.

It matters to me if an applicant went AWOL.   Generally, I do not hire those with AWOL experience.
Even if  it is not declared in the resume -- my HR Dept  will find out.  SOP - background checks, includes a scrutiny of SSS, PhilHealth, PagIbig history to validate employment/ alleged non-employment.
As far as our company is concerned, since our business is construction -- we don't line AWOL histories.

With regards to temporary employees -- mga laborers, pag nag AWOL --  we maintain a file of such  workers. They will never work for us again.

Maybe, in certain industries where security of tenure is not taken as part & parcel of employment -  it does not matter if may AWOL in the applicant's history.
Sa mga business na whether an employee performs well or not eh basta terminated after 5 months -- they probably don't care about AWOLs.

I've been working in recruitment for the last 6-7 years. I've recruited for call center roles and corporate roles. Dapat hindi ko shineshare to but i will hehe... hindi naman chinecheck ng recruiter yung sss and other contributions mo most likely nag blubluff lang yun na ichecheck pag na sesense na may tinatago kang employment.

Kung maiksi lang naman yung employment mo better do not declare it sa cv mo kasi ang thinking naman ng most recruiters ay "past behavior predicts future behavior" so dahil nag awol ka dati most likely eh mag aawol ka din pag nahirapan ka or what not.

Kung nag awol ka naman dahil may valid reason ka and 1 time lang naman, ideclare mo nalang. minsan kasi talagang di maiiwasan mag awol at kung reasonable at objective naman ang recruiter mo maiintindihan nya yun and won't affect your application. Now ang problema lang dito, marami kasing feeling nila valid reason nila pero in essence hindi talaga. Like example - ayaw mo nalang pumasok ehhh hindi valid yun, nakakaasar yon hehe. sorry ha! pero it's really not an excuse kasi, it just shows how irresponsible and selfish you are hehe.. what's another 30 days to render diba?
Pero kung tipong may namatay, nagkasakit ka ng bongga ok naman yon na reason.. pwede pwede pa. basta wag lang lagi yun ang reason. yung iba kasing nag apply 4 na beses na nag awol using the same reasons - i mean sinong linoko mo?

For those who worked for quite sometime na biglang nag awol na hindi valid reason ang magiging problem mo jan eh yung employment gap... Kasi iisipin ni recruiter - eh anong ginawa for so and so number of months and years? Most of the time kasi employment gaps reflect your drive and motivation.

Yun lang! pet peeve ko talaga yung pag nahihirapan nag quiquit na lalo na sa call center. wag naman po mag awol or quit pag nahirapan or lipat ng lipat (hopper kumbaga) kasi naapektuhan yung industry... yung mga matitinong nag wowork... kasi yung mga clients na gegeneralize nila na irresponsable and low drive mga pinoys kaya maraming na pupullout na account, or binabarat nila yung bayad kasi may mga experience sila na nasasayang yung binabayad sa agents during training kasi umaalis agad.

Yung sinasabing don't declare it because it's not related.. partly true pero sa different roles na hinahire ko for - lahat kaming recruiters really look at the employment gaps and the reason behind it. Panget din tignan kung ang dami mo ng type of roles na sobrang iba iba talaga ... kasi it kinda shows na hindi mo alam gusto mo.. if you're building a career kasi dapat your cv would show na you're working on a specific goal.

No offense to anyone ha - just trying to help :)
