Scared of NSD, prefers CS
« on: June 22, 2013, 06:34:32 pm »
I am giving birth on September and ever since I got pregnant, I have been opting to give birth via CS. I've heard and read kasi horror stories pag NSD, distressed baby, nuchal cord, meconium aspiration, takot sa pain ng NSD - so as much as possible gusto ko iearly CS. Everyone around me who just gave birth recently opted for CS. My other cousin also who was a first time mom @ 37 yrs old opted for CS but gave birth earlier than the scheduled CS date Ako lang ba nakaka feel nito?

First time mom, praning.

i won't judge you just because you want CS over NSD. But I hope you will read up on the pros and cons of having natural birth versus CS. women's bodies are designed to give birth NATURALLY, in case you forgot, women in the past didn't have hospitals and didn't undergo C sections. some even gave birth drug free.

don't let your fear overcome what should happen naturally in giving birth. don't be lead blind by what's being practiced by doctors nowadays. i myself was not prepared when I first gave birth, my biggest regret. I didn't read up and trusted my OB completely, thinking she would give me the best service because she was a family friend. but turns out she just wanted what was easy for her and scheduled me for CS right away, even if I had a good chance of having a normal birth.

try attending birthing classes so you will be enlightened about giving birth, it might help you.

hmm..i gave birth via nsd. i don't know pero yes, i guess you wouldn't have stress during cs. you might never know also. baka mamaya you have tendency to bleed too much just like what had happened to my friend.  also, have you ever thought of what will happen after cs? like you having to clean your wounds..uncomfortable to hold the baby especially if you opted to breastfeed..or stitches that you could be allergic with..or wound that will hurt when the temperature is cold... things like that.

i have nothing against cs, but i believe cs should be done only when necessary..like when the baby is not coming down or maliit na sipitsipitan or cord coil, etc.

i think you should talk with your ob. pwede namang painless nsd. ask your ob for options then choose. wag ka matakot manganak. it might hurt, but when you see your baby, that's when you'll say it's all worth it.  :)

^ please never believe your OB when they say "maliit" sipit sipitan mo, wanting to have a scheduled CS early on. How can they say it's too small? Do they have a way of measuring it? It's their way of convincing you to say yes to CS. Unless your baby grows too big, which you should be wary of not packing too many pounds during the last stages of your pregnancy, then that's the only time it should be an option to do CS.

Also, you would have to deal with being forgetful after the general anesthesia.

I am not against CS pero mas preferred ko ang NSD.

Talk to your OB about it.

;-) Happy pregnancy everyone ;-)

I agree with the posts here. Ako if i had a choice i'll go for NSD. Kaya very sensitive yun case ko, placenta previa totalis ako, there's no way to be normal or else both of us will die. Pregnant din ako ngayon for my 2nd baby, i'm planning to discuss with my OB kung possible ako for VBAC. If possible then i'll go for it. Ayoko na kasi MA-cs, tagal na recuperating period, most especially kung may 3yr old ka na makulit na anak, na mayat maya gusto magpabuhat... maraming bawal din kapag na-CS. NSD bilis ng recovery, saka wala ka iisipin na baka mag-open yun wound or what.

1st time ko rin magbuntis and takot rin ako manganak. Mababa pain tolerance ko, but i never thought of having cs procedure when i give birth.

Lots of prayers lang, walking at determination.

I gave birth to my two kids via NSD pero this time since oligo na ko no choice ako but to had an emergency cs. Wala nga akong naramdaman na pain from the labor pero grabe yung sakit afterwards. At makakalimutin na ko ngayon because of the anesthesia.

This is my first pregnancy and  I prefer NSD, kaya as much as I can I am doing my best to be on shape. Im scared sa pain and pagod na maeexperience ko but I'm up for it since I have my OB na susupport besides dun ko mafifeel ang pagiging babae ;D.Sabi nila so much pain kapag NSD but comparing to CS. During my nursing college, we have assisted a lot of CS and minsan delay yung pagiyak ng baby, may tendency din daw kasi na need bgyan ng antidote sa anesthesia dahil pati si baby tulog. Kapag NSD,mas healthy ang baby. A lot of mothers wished to have NSD but due to complications or early labor napipilitan magpa-CS.

CS is more expensive din and mas matagal maghilom ang sugat.

Hahaha...

Sis cookerbel - alam mo, its your choice.  ako i wanted normal delivery BUT had to go CS.  and its the BEST decision ever.  I am personally afraid of pain, but then I was already 7cm and hindi pa masakit, kaya ko pa siya to be honest - it was only at 7cm ako nagpaepidural. So inisip ko, kaya ko pang mag-normal birth!

But then the baby was not descending and I was already tired, kaya they decided na CS nalang.  And it was suuuuuuuuuch a good decision.  I was asleep the whole time (I asked to be put to sleep, ayoko ng memories!  Hahaha...) and ayun.  Ginising lang ako to breastfeed! :)  (I am still bfeeding)

Hahaha!!  Pero kasi like me, I am very pro-CS because I had an easy time.  And since I want more children, I don't want to be traumatized with the pain (although in all honesty, kaya naman talaga - I always assumed that mababa tolerance ko for pain, mataas pala!!)

I think nowadays, the technology is good narin and very safe.  Kaya I frown on people who say that CS is bad and super negative and etc.. Are you saying that since I gave birth via CS that I'll be less of a mother or I'm a bad mother dahil hindi ako nag normal?

Aww [textspeak!] salamat sa mga replies. Actually hindi naman ako takot sa pain. Natakot lang ako for the baby napapraning nga lang. More of para sa baby yung takot ko than for me.

Whatever is best for me and our baby, go ako.

I had to go CS due to fetal stress, pero kung wala yun I would still go for Normal. Mas marami complications ng CS like water sa lungs ni baby (which happened to mine and he got admitted for 1 week) na sana ay nasi squeeze out naturally pag Normal delivery and infections. And did I mention mas mahal? Hahaha!

Cord coils and meconium stains happens whether CS or normal ka sis.

I was also scared, but what I did was arm myself with knowledge. Normal naman ang matakot kasi wala tayong control sa mangyayari but as long as you know what happens to your body makakalma ka rin at mas mapapalitan ng excitement. :)

Attend a birthing class sis. Marami ka dun matututunan. I attended Rome Kanapi's. Kahit na cs ako, it was worth it. May freebies pa kaming nakukuha every week, hehe. And it will also educate your husband. :)

Hi, I just gave birth last April via emergency CS. And all I can say is that it was the best move for us.

PROs
- I personally did not feel any pain recovering from the operation/wound. In fact I was walking by the second day na and was very much mobile and independent from then on. Lakad, ligo, karga ng baby, breastfeeding, walang naging problema or complications. I was on painkillers but that was more for the catheter insertion and removal (which will be inserted whether you go NSD or CS anyway) and the doctor also put a surgical wound drain on me as a precautionary measure just in case I bleed too much (which I didn't)
- The surgical wound was small and now almost invisible. At first ayaw ko pang tingnan kasi akala ko na butcher ako pero before I was wheeled in sa OR for the emergency CS, I made my doctor promise to give me a nice "bikini cut". Haha.
- I was given an epidural during the labor and a stronger dose of it when I was being prepped for CS. So I was fully awake during the CS itself. Yun nga lang sa sobrang pagod at antok ko, after the operation tulog ako sa recovery room for about an hour bago nila ako nadala sa room ko. Forgetfulness? It's easy to blame the epidural pero I haven't noticed that I have become worse. My brain is functioning per normal, kung nagiging slow to respond siguro ako, dala ng sobrang pagod at puyat caring for the baby.

CONs
- MAHAL!!!
- See above on the catheter and wound drain...Eto ang super sakit nung tinanggal. As in parang mamatay na ako sa sobrang sakit habang tinatanggal and after they took it out (especially the catheter) parang di ako makatayo at maka-ihi nang mabuti.
- A wound is a wound, kahit na invisible pa yun, I still had to care for it. The nurses at the hospital taught me how to clean and care for the wound before I left for the hospital. When I got home the surgical dressing was still there tapos may waterproof na bandage lang. Hindi ko sya tinanggal until 3 days after arriving home and during that time, mapula nalang sya, no open wound, no stitches to be seen. Pero of course, takot pa rin akong hawakan nung simula and hassle din mag lagay ng kung ano anong bandages and dermatix para tuluyang gumaling at mawala yung scar.
- "Muffin top" - hindi ko alam kung yung bang mga nag NSD meron nito pero I noticed that as my tummy was getting smaller, meron pa ring flab na maliit on top of the wound - actually its where the top of the underwear sits. I guess its more on exercises talaga para maging flat ulit ang tyan natin!

BTW - prior to giving birth I was dead set on NSD. I attended all the antenatal classes possible, nang birthing exercises pa ako, just to prepare for NSD. In fact I got very upset when they told me at 5AM that there is a possibility na ma emergency CS ako (I had a fever and there was fetal distress & tachycardia everytime I tried to push). Pero at that time, I thought to myself, nung binibigyan nila ako ng gamot to fight the fever and try resolving my baby's distress, might as well get it done and over with nang CS rather than we both suffer for a few more hours kakaintay tapos CS rin naman ang kababagsakan ko.

I would say, hope for the best nalang (NSD), prepare for the worst. There is no right or wrong answer here, what works for one person might not work for another kaya you just have to be informed about the pros and cons, so you can prepare yourself for any eventuality.

Priceless - I agree with you, I was too deadset on NSD but wala eh, kelangan ng i-CS.  I have a HUUUUUGE muffin top BUT you know what, my friend - wala, flat na siya.  Kelangan talaga exercise daw.. So ayun!!

Maidagdag ko lang:

Before I gave birth, everyone was encouraging me to have NSD. It wasn't an issue dahil ako mismo gusto ko sana nung NSD - I even kept on telling my doctor during every check up na NSD ako. I've listened to all the lectures sa antenatal course, pati yung pregnancy fitness instructor, pati birthing class instructor - lahat sila advocates of NSD. Narinig ko na lahat ng advice, kwento, napanood ko na lahat ng dapat panoorin, and I believed I can do it, women's bodies are designed to do it, it's the most natural thing in the world, etc etc etc. In fact subliminally I made myself believe that CS was evil (haha) na masakit, not good for my baby, bad for me, etc etc etc.

You know what? Now that I've been through my experience, I wouldn't change it for the world. Would I prefer natural vs. CS next time? I don't know. I am just thankful that the experience was not traumatic for me and that my son is healthy and thriving. I don't feel like I'm a second rate woman o hindi ako tutoong babae dahil hindi ako umire, the love for my son is not diminished by however he entered this world. What's important is that he is here and I have set aside all my preconceptions, my wants, my vanity, my pride, just to have him here.

Sis as per my ob, NSD is always the best option. (syempre depende sa situation ha pero kung kaya mag NSD go for it)

In the long run, mas beneficial sa health natin mga moms ang NSD compare to CS :) Maraming disadvantage ang CS as per my ob na hindi agad nakikita or naeexperience pero in the long run, andun ang disadvantage.. Ask you ob nalang din.

I think in the beginning, maiisip mo talaga mag-NSD. Like ako, my husband and I even attended Chiqui Brosas' birthing class, that way, my husband can be with me during labor kaso when D-day came, 27 hours na akong in labor, wala pa rin son ko. Nakakapagod na and honestly, at that time, I just want to get it done and over with. I was so relieved when my OB finally decided to have me wheeled into the delivery room. I was given regional anesthesia that only numbed my body from the waist down kaya I was awake. For me, dun ko talaga na-experience yung joy of giving birth kasi I was more relaxed and wala ng pain. For the first time that day, I felt the excitement. Yung giddy feeling na "Ohmygod, this is it!" Hindi puro labor, labor, labor.  As expected, the pain came the morning after and my god, super niyang sakit! Yung simpleng pag-upo, grabe.. but I guess, it's all about learning how to manage it--excruciating as it may be. In my case, I had to "make friends" with the pain para I can attend to my baby's needs kaya by day 4, we were allowed to go home na. Nakapag-breastfeed ako ng maayos (and still am!) and nakakalakad na agad. As for the tummy issue, exercise and discipline lang katapat nun, in my opinion.

Of course, NSD will always be the preferred option pero ok na din na may CS especially if complications arise. Like, in my case, it came very handy and in the end, I was just happy that my baby was born safely.
