anglerxangler, dogs kasi are carnivores by nature, so raw diet is the appropriate diet for them. tama yung highly acidic tummy, salmonella won't survive kasi madali nila madidigest ang meat wala ng time ang salmonella magvolt-in sa tummy nila haha. there is a raw feeding thread here sis, search mo lang madami akong napost na links doon.

^ i agree with sis abu, even the premium brands and daming issues. whether sa quality ng ingredients, nutritional content, or sa sourcing and processing stage.  pati na rin sa storage may issue din with contamination etc.

I just think of it this way, i consider  commercial dog food to be in the same category as canned food and junk food - it's just plain BAD for you and your dog.
kahit anong pakulo ang gawin ng mga companies to get you to buy their "junk" we know na natural and home-cooked  is still the best.

and with regards to eukanuba and iams, i haven't tried those brands coz luckily i did a bit of research when i got my first dog ( although i must admit, not soon/thorough enough kasi i still fed them kibbles for a while din ) If i remember correctly Eukanuba and Iams are one of the worst dogfood brands in the US.  If you do a quick Google search on them, ang daming customer complaints, recall issues, and questionable pa yung ingredients nila. And to think na these brands are not really that cheap ha, pano na kaya yung local brands na super mura :P

i think my puppy knows this, dahil nakatatlong brands na ako at ayaw niya na talaga. he'd rather eat his veggies pa nga than the kibbles.

pag nag alaga ka talaga ng aso, responsibility mo na mabuhay siya ng maayos habang nasa iyo siya. and giving him a healthy diet is the best way to do it.

^^^thanks sis abu for the link :)
it makes me so angry seeing all the crap they put in commercial dog food  >:(  i can't believe they're charging so much for inedible poisonous garbage! and the sad thing is a lot of dogs have actually died from being fed all that crap.  grrr! nakakainis talaga  >:(

^sis devilish_einjel, i used to feed vitality to my dogs because it was the brand suggested by my vet.  But after i stopped feeding them kibbles and switched to home cooking, they rarely got sick, the rashes went away, their fur looked better, and they look a lot healthier.
Since it sounds like your dogs enjoy naman the chicken, fish, veggie combo you give them, i would suggest that you eliminate the kibbles all together and just stick with home cooking.  It's a lot healthier for your puppy.

but research ka muna ng konti sis on the proper proportions and stuff.  you have a lot of other options din like BARF, raw feeding, etc.. so it really does depend on what you think is best for your dog.

for me, i chose home-cooking - i just steam some chopped meat and veggies and add a bit of rice.
i give them raw pork bones, fruits, and veggies as snacks, and i supplement with vitamins/oral drops as needed.
one of my dogs has a harder time putting on weight compared to my other dogs so i also give her satin balls as treats (satin balls is made with raw ground meat, oatmeal, honey, egg, gelatin, etc...)

Google2x ka muna sis and then try a few variations and see what works best for your dog :)

^check this out: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php/product/2001

kung puro grains ang dogfood hindi sya maganda for dogs, it will stress their system kasi hirap sila to digest grains. mas okay pa yung chicken, fish mixed with small amounts of veggies and oatmeal or rice. add diff kinds of meat and organs na lang from time to time to balance the nutrition ;)

eto i found a helpful link on homemade diets for our dogs, medyo mahaba but you will learn how to make proper homemade meals:

Pajoin ulit.. I tried to give my fur kids Skippy peanut butter.. Sobrang gustong-gusto nila.. ^_^

Hi girls. Question lang... Our pet is already 5 years old. As much as possible, we dont give him table food except na lang pag naubusan ng dog food na usually rice and konting ulam. Just want to check, ok lang ba if adult dog na puro dog food binibigay namin? Or should we add kahit boiled meat rin together with the dog food? Before acana and orijen sya, now we give him royal canin for yorkie adult. Thanks in advance :-)

^dogs are carnivores so a diet of pure dog food is not the best diet for them. mas maganda kung may boiled pa rin. acana and orijen is way better than royal canin, stick with the two, wag na kayo magdowngrade  ;)

My doggie absolutely loves Acana Chicken and Burbank Potato. He used to have Holistic and we always add soup but with Acana, he eats it as is and ubos niya agad.

I'll try Orijen next.

Hi mga sis,

I have a jack russel terrier and sobrang namimili na siya ng food.

Gusto kong i-try yung acana and orijen but naghanap ako sa mga petshops around here sa Cainta, wala akong makita maski yung royal canin. So, can anyone please PM me where to buy these dog foods please?

Also, another question mga sis, pwede ba yung sabaw ng nilaga or tinola or sinigang mixed with brown rice ipakain sa kanila?

sis may mga dog food na in can, you can mix it with kibbles para no need to feed him/her table food at mas ganahan din siya. check ka na lang ng magandang brand :)

pero if you have some time try mo magboil or bake ng meat add some veggies if you want din :)

sugarplum..hindi mo sis kailangan maging chef para sa food nila, boiling lang okay na ;) pwede ka pumili sa chicken, pork or beef, eggs, fish, no skin bones and fats, yung lean part lang, masama kasi ang cooked bones and fats sa kanila eh. boil mo lang then add rice, veggies like squash, sayote, carrots, potatoes, leafy greens tapos mash/chop mo mabuti yung veggies for easier digestion. hirap kasi ang dogs to process plant matters kaya dapat super lambot ng veggies. you can cook a big batch naman, refrigerate then reheat mo na lang pag meal times.

try mo sa pet express sm masinag, or sa sulit baka merong nearby pet store or pwede magship sa inyo.

as much as possible yung natural broth lang ang ibigay sa kanila. unhealthy kasi pag may condiments, sa kidney ang tama nyan in the long run.

mga sis okay kaya tong recipe na to:
An old favourite recipe used for putting weight on an animal quickly. It has also been used to help with some forms of hair loss, and when dogs are moulting, to keep the skin and coat healthy and shiny. This recipe is intended to be fed raw and should be made in large quantities and frozen into individual servings.

5lb meat mince (beef, lamb or chicken)
half jar wheatgerm
half large box of oatmeal (uncooked)
3/4 Cup vegetable/sunflower oil
5 eggs
5 packets/envelopes unflavoured gelatin
3/4 Cup molasses
A pinch of salt
llb cornflakes
pinch of garlic powder to add flavour - optional

Mix all ingredients together well, much like a meatloaf. Put into separate freezer bags and freeze, thawing out as needed. It puts weight on in a very short time.. You can feed it every daily alone or mix with dried kibble.

felicity_ong, i think it's the satin ball recipe. narinig ko yan in a pet forum way back 2008, I've tried it pero kulang ang ingredients kasi medyo mahirap hanapin yung wheatgerm and molasses. Yung alaga ko homecooked sya from 4 months to 1.5yo, lumaki naman sya at tumaba kahit minsan ko lang inoffer yung satin balls. Based on reviews, nakakataba sya talaga. But after some years of doing research on dog nutrition, I've found out na carnivores sila so the best diet should come from animal meat.

Personally, i think you can omit some of the ingredients like wheatgerm and cornflakes, because dogs find it hard to digest grains and some are even allergic to it. oatmeal or rice will do, pero in small quantities lang, filler lang kasi ang grains sa kanila. Pampataba but provides little nutritional value. omit the gelatin also and replace with eggs as binder. you can also add organs like liver, heart, gizzard, pero in small quantities lang bec. they are too rich, loose stools and hypervitaminosis ang side effect. honey is also good for dogs, so pwede yan kung walang molasses. then add grated carrots, squash, sayote, finely chopped leafy greens.

Ang sabi kapag homemade diet, hindi daw sya balanced meal unlike dogfood na complete nutrition daw. pero pwede naman magsupplement, dami na naman vitamins for dogs. also, don't stick with just one protein source, do rotation or mixture of chicken, pork, beef, add organs, eggs, fish (which are high in omega 3 like sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon). giving fish oil and vco can also help in making the coat shiny. medyo matrabaho ang homemade dogfood but what the heck, they deserve the best! provide recreational bones din to cleanse their teeth. yung mga biyas, let them chew hanggang magsawa hehe.

candacena, protein ang building blocks nila, it also repairs body tissues, so make sure na laging may meat ang diet nya. hinay na lang sa liver kasi rich sya in vit a, pag sumobra nagiging brittle ang bones. fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties so makakatulong yan sa sa pain. napacheck nyo na sa vet? baka kailangan nya ng supplements for his joints, glucosamine okay yun for joints problems.
