Just bought a copy of Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi all in hardcover at Powerbooks. It cost me a fortune though. P599 per title. I bought them in hardcover in good faith that I would love them to death and would be a permanent fixture in my bookshelf (My favorite titles are mostly in hardcover).

How wrong I was. I cannot even get past the first book. It was a terrible read and now my hard-earned money just went down the drain. Actually, I'm more conflicted whether I'm upset at the books or at myself for believing all those good reviews in Amazon (where it got a 4.3 or 4.5 rating).

^ That's too bad. I liked the series. If reading Juliette's disjointed thoughts in the first book drives you crazy, let me assure you that she gets better in the next two books.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is hands-down the WORST book I've had the utter misfortune of coming across with (and to think I've been convincing myself for years that there could possibly no literary work worse than Lisa McMann's Wake. I wish I could unread and unbuy this - it was clearly a waste of my money (and time). I felt dumb after reading this book (though I highly recommend this one for people with low comprehension and intelligence). I never thought a work of pure fiction could induce massive loss of neurons. I honestly don't get people who hate Twilight with much fervor - Twilight was good; the hype just killed it for me. And while I cringed and harshly criticized the lame Twilight fan fiction 50 Shades of Grey (I honestly don't know how anyone could be turned-on by such a badly-written lemon; I've been a long-time fan fiction writer and reader and there's a LOT better ones out there), Shatter Me doesn't even come close to the atrocity of 50 Shades. It actually makes 50 Shades look like a literary masterpiece. Shatter Me is a sorry excuse of dystopian fiction (and I wouldn't even consider this as dystopian - it's more like a fantasy romance in a dystopian setting).

It's not about the strike-throughs I'm just rolling my eyes at fanatic readers who think the author is VERY original and creative with this discovery when in fact bloggers, like me, have been using this writing tool since the dawn of time. It's not about the migraine-inducing run-on sentences ever heard of a comma, Mafi?. It's not about the repetition repetition repetition I'm not a half-wit, Mafi. You only need to tell it to me ONCE. It's about the unhinged and clearly disturbed and abused heroine who is obsessed with a flying bird that has some sort of crown on its head if you could ever consider her as a heroine - she basically does NOTHING but mope around and feel sorry for herself all day. I could even deal with the unrealism here including the ridiculous INSTA-LOVE and seemingly PERFECT heroine who every male specimen has to fall for. The one thing that took the axe is the UNnecessary over-use of METAPHORS. Seriously, NO ONE speaks like that in REAL LIFE, not even bloody Shakespeare! Mafi clearly thinks she would sound more refined and it add more credibility to her as an author if her heroine would have thoughts such as these:
-I'd like to cry into his eyes.
-Warner thinks Adam is a cardboard cutout of vanilla regurgitations.
-There are 400 cotton balls caught in my windpipe.
-James and Adam glance back at me and I melt into pink Play-Doh.
-I offer him a smile. Try to keep my organs from falling out. Hope the holes in my head aren't showing.
Those are just examples of the WTF moments in the book. And the book is full of them.
THIS BOOK IS NOT FICTION. THIS BOOK IS A COLLECTION OF METAPHORS.

I'm confident I could fill up a 400-leaf (or more) notebook dissecting, analyzing, and criticizing this pathetic excuse of a novel. I never thought I could possess such immensely strong feelings of dislike towards a piece of literature. What frustrates me so much is that the author could have done something wonderful with the unoriginal plot she had and while I COULD believe Suzanne Collins when she said she never knew Battle Royale while writing Hunger Games, I definitely DON'T believe that Mafi never knew anything about X-Men, or Rogue, for that matter. And as a HUGE X-Men and Rogue fan, I've read BETTER Rogue-centric fanfictions but she didn't.

With all due respect, sis, ever heard of a hyperbole? Never thought you'd be taking it literally seeing as you clearly enjoyed Mafi's exaggerated and meaningless figures of speeh.
