i had experienced that horrible time when the vet tells you it's more "proper" to have your pet euthanized, twice. one with a beloved pet and then recently, to my adopted doggie. both times i just couldn't do it.  :-[  i feel so guilty now because i felt like i just made them suffer longer? my husband said it's just grief talking. i didn't make that decision then because both dogs made me "feel" like they didn' t want to go yet. :-\

any of you GT sisters made this difficult decision for your pets? what were the circumstances? where was it done? how much did you pay?

my apologies if telling it now would make you sad or cry.  :-[

I had my dog euthanized 6 years ago. My shih tzu was suffering from kidney failure then one morning, we saw her lying down sa floor. Mahirap yung decision na yun but I had to do it kasi alam kong nahihirapan na rin siya.

cocoysmom, im so sorry for the grief and guilt you are feeling. You only did what you thought was best during those times... We always pray for a miracle and to hope for one is not bad because sometimes miracles do happen.

I never had a pet euthanized pa. Im "lucky" that they either died of old age or parvo (which is sudden).

My youngest now has kidney issues. Although we are able to manage it for now, im afraid that sooner or later, it might come to the situation when i need to make a call. I've been conditioning myself about this, but i know i can never be prepared for it.  :'(

my neighbor had her baby put down last year. she had 12 year old golden retriever who had leg and hip problems. every time i'd walk her she'd plop down nalang in the middle of the street and won't budge. at times her leg naman would just buckle at ayun plop sa kalye until one day when i was to walk her eh she had already taken the pup the day before to put her down.

i didn't expect her to take the dog that soon, nagka fire pa sa canyon where we live so the timing to euthanize her was a really not so good day.  i was thinking it was just a strain on the leg or something else  na she'll eventually heal from it  and be well or she'll just go naturally. pero ilang beses na rin kasi nagbubuckle knees nya and she was having a difficult time na rin talaga madali na rin kasi mapagod the doggie,  wala na yung quality of life nya. mas nakakaawa na alam mo how vibrant she once was tapos biglang she couldn't enjoy na the little things she used to enjoy. plus the pain they feel  i bet can be so torturous lalo na if it's a recurring illness or injury better to just let them go na talaga.

where did you have your dogs euthanized? do you know a vet who can do home service for this? we were already advised to do this, even if it's really hard and truly heartbreaking, it's so hard to see her in pain, i don't want her to suffer anymore  :'(

This is one of the most difficult decisions we had to make and dreadful minutes.. It was for the better though kasi hindi na mahihirapan.

Our dog is very old and it was time. The vet did not suggest it at all. Sinasabi niya yung state na hindi na gagaling pero never niya sinabi na it's time to let go..

It was in Vets in Practice Mandaluyong at dawn (around 12mn-1am) and their fee for the size of our dog is Php 1500.

had to do this one time and simula nun dun ako nawalan ng gana na mag-alaga pa, she was terribly suffering from a disease which requires her to have maintenance like 2x a week yata hanggang sa maging okay sya kaso problema masyadong malaking pera ang involved so my dad told me to just accept the fact na i had to let her go kesa gastusan pa..

my dad accompanied me to the vet hanggang sa pagpapalibing sa PAWS sa Marikina, i forgot the details kung magkano pero after that tinawagan ako ng doctor at hinahanap sya only to find out na may willing sana mag-adopt. na-guilty tuloy ako pero tapos na eh..

We lost our beautiful and loyal friend, Sofie, our dear yellow lab last Oct. 27, 2014. She was the love of our lives. She was everything to my kids and now she's gone first because of pyometra, then distemper. Up to this day my eldest son who is 19 doesn't want to speak to me because I let Sofie be put to sleep. Back then I had no choice because she was vomiting blood and was showing advanced stages of distemper.
She  just underwent the illness of pyometra and now she had to battle distemper. Everything was so sudden, she never showed signs of weakness and we thought that 10 yo and 6 mos. is still such a youthful age for her to be sick. We were so stupid to think that way. I wish we had brilliant and true-to-their-mission vets who would have helped us through those trying times.
I could never forgive myself for playing god during that time. WARNING: to all who will opt for mercy killing. DON'T DO IT. You will never fill the void you will have in your heart. If your dog is very sick, try all means to cure her or let her be cured by a trustworthy vet. If your vet is irritant of you, billing every word he'd say or opting for mercy killing,  RUN away from him and find a way for your pet to prolong its life.
I was so stupid to listen to heartless science and BS new age hullabaloos. Let nature take its course and always pray to our Lord in heaven for strength, wisdom and guidance. What's done is done but I maybe could help by advising people who really love their pets to love them even more by taking more care of them when they are sick and helpless. When we were sick and helpless, didn't our pets look out for us even in our darkest hours? They are the only ones who could and would be there for us when everyone is busy with their own thing.
I betrayed my dearest best friend Sofie, and I pray that God may forgive me for being so arrogant on how to end the life of His precious creature. I am hurtful and you will be too once you opted for "mercy" killing. Try to save your pet and if nothing works just stay calm and wait for the time your pet would bid her last goodbye.
I miss you and I love you my dearest friend SOFIE...

Yes.. :( Napatunayan ko there are some cases where it'd be kinder to let your pet (in my case, our family dog) go rather than let it suffer for a long time pa.

Definitely there's that pang of guilt pero mas matimbang yung ayaw na namin mahirapan pa pet namin.

It's very heartbreaking to see them suffer and let them die naturally. Tough love I guess.

We know that lives of our dogs will be shorter than ours. Kaya medyo hesitant talaga ako mag alaga ngayon. When I was a kid, we had dogs, and it is indeed painful to see them go, lalo pa kung ganito ang situation - euthenasia. The vet would suggest this, and all we can do as siblings is cry.   :'(

I hope I never hear those words from the vet because di ko alam if kakayanin ko.  I love my dogs so much; they're my kids. They're my life.

I've never had the horrible experience of this decision but I think if my pet is in a lot of pain, the decision would be easier for me to make. It's more horrible to hear your beloved pet cry out in pain. It's so heartbreaking. I was at work when my dog died suddenly. When I came home, my mom told me what happened, that my dog was moaning and writhing in pain before he passed. I was so guilty for not getting him that yearly booster shot, banking on his being askal as being hardy. It was distemper or probably something else but that will forever be burned in my brain.

I'm really against euthanasia and would rather let my pets die naturally, giving them chance to fight for their lives. I didn't expect myself to be in a situation where euthanasia was one of the options.

1++ year ago, I discovered that my 11y/o poodle's both eyes are blind. That was the start of everything. One illness came after another due to old age. She even had to undergo blood transfusion, was hospitalized for weeks. She's very dear to me. The worst was Chronic Kidney Failure. I decided to take her home. The vet told me that they couldn't do anything anymore and we just had to wait for her time and give her TLC. I did everything. I even bought a herbal medicine abroad for her kidney failure. This was the only thing that helped my dog.

Then the time came. One night, my sister called me na paralyzed na daw yung pet ko and nangingisay, the dog was crying daw. By this time, nasa ibang bahay na ako because I got married. I could not bring her because she's blind nga and no one will take care of her when me and my husband are working. I rushed to our house. I rushed her to the hospital and nag undergo siya ng test. Chronic Kidney FailureStage 4 na, plus she had heart disease. Treatment of the two were very contradicting. Pag nitreat ang kidney niya, madadali ang puso niya, and vice versa. The vet gave me two options: 1. We could try the treatment for kidney, for the sake na nagtry... 2. Put her to sleep.

I knew the best option but it was hard for me to accept it. It really broke my heart, di ko talaga napigilan naiyak talaga ako. But seeing her suffer, I just couldn't take it. The treatment would take 3 days. Pag triny ko yung treatment, baka lagutan siya ng hininga when I'm not around. I wanted to be by her side on her last breath and the last thing she would hear was my voice. I believe she wanted me to let her go. 1 year was a very long extension. She was expected to live only for a max of 4months from last year so reaching here 12th birthday was already a blessing.

So ayun, I decided to put her to sleep coz I believe not doing so will be selfishness. The doctor gave us a private room to spend some quality time with each other. Pumunta rin yung buong family ko to bid their last goodbye and to witness everything.

Now, I believe that euthanasia is acceptable depending on the situation. Especially if the pet is in a lot of pain and no cure anymore.

I have never imagined I would find myself in this predicament. Even though I said earlier that the decision would be easier to make if my pet was in pain, it's easier said than done.

Yesterday, we had made the decision to put our JRT to sleep. He declined so rapidly since his diagnosis of heartworm disease in Feb. He got distemper too, IDK when he got the virus but we just noticed his symptoms last week. In his last two days, he was still weak and declining but by sheer stubbornness, he would manage to walk 15feet or more to pee & poop. Even if he would fall down due to his constant muscle twitch and stiff limbs, we could not confine him. The tipping point for us was when he started crying or moaning. He has a high pain tolerance and hearing him cry out for something we don't know how to ease, it was heartbreaking. I felt that there could still be something we could do for him but in reality, his prognosis was weak. His liver was already toast from the antibiotics & steroid for the heartworm and more antibiotics for his distemper. The virus has already infected his brain and nervous system.

Yesterday, still being unsure if euthanasia was the right thing to do, I talked to him. I told him it was ok if he wanted to rest. I can't explain it but at that time, I got my answer. He stopped whining and I just felt he was ready. We brought him to the vet and stayed for the procedure. It was such a relief to see him stop twitching after they injected him with the sedative and muscle relaxant. By the time the last injection to his heart was given, he was already unconscious. It's still a sad position to be in but I'm glad he's no longer in pain. I'm just sad that he's not with us anymore.
