my daughter just finished DTwP/IPV booster 2nd shot at Jacob's Ladder. i paid P1250 and it's much cheaper kesa sa pedia. siguro naman maintindihan ni pedia why i chosed to have her vaccine there.  medyo nag-bruise lang yung kaliwang braso nya and i applied cold compress as what the doctor suggested. next month will be MMR/Varicella combination vaccine that costs P2500. meron palang na-miss na shot yung anak ko sa Pneumococcal kaya sinuggest ng doctor na yung pang-adult na daw ang ibibigay sa kanya which is much cheaper kasi P1300 lang daw yun.

my baby just had her rota virus at 2.5 mos. but i didn't proceed with pcv cuz i got surprised by the fee! supposedly, both vaccines will be administered to my baby. now my question is, up to when can baby have the pcv? she will turn 3 mos. next week. hope doc lelet could reply to my query here. thanks so much in advance

Unlike the rotavirus vaccine wherein there is a strict age limit, there is no deadline as to when you can give the pneumococcal vaccine. Even adults can get vaccinated with the pneumococcal vaccine.

Here is the recommended number of doses of PCV depending on the age at which the first dose is given:
Age 6 weeks to 6 months - 3 primary doses and 1 booster
7 - 11 months of age - 2 primary doses given 2 months apart and a booster given after the child turns 12 months of age
12 - 23 months - 1 primary dose and 1 booster at least 2 months from the primary dose
24 months and above - 1 dose

The number of doses decreases as the age advances because the immune system becomes more equipped to produce antibodies.
However, I do not recommend putting it off for too long, especially for babies who are sickly or had early bouts of infection because the longer you put it off, the more at risk your baby is to pneumococcal infections (ex. Invasive pneumococcal disease or IPD, pneumonia, otitis media, meningitis, etc.).

Hi Dra. Lelet, my daughter is due to have her MMR next month before she turns 10 months old, her pedia asked us to see her on dec 21, however we are traveling to Hong Kong on the 26th. I'm worried that she might have rashes or fever while we are out of the country. My pedia advised there's a low of chance of rashes and fever. What are your thoughts? Should I delay until we are back home in January?

^ You cannot predict who will have side effects and who will not have side effects so even though the risk is low, there is still a chance that she will develop fever and rashes during your trip.
Perhaps you can ask your pedia if it would be ok with her to delay the vaccine till you come back so that you will be able to enjoy your trip without worrying that she might all of a sudden develop side effects while you are there.

hi doc lelet, unfortunately nahawa ang 10 month old baby ko sa eldest ko ng chicken pox... my baby also had measles when he was 8 months old, do you think there still a need for a vaccines on these? MMR or MMRV? TIA!

There is no age limit to giving the chicken pox vaccine. Even adults are recommended to get the vaccine.
For catch up immunization, chicken pox vaccination consists of 2 doses given at least 3 months apart.
Medyo marami ang nagkakaroon ng chickenpox ngayon. Usually those who only had 1 dose as a child yung nagkakaroon ng chicken pox so I strongly encourage all parents not to forget that there is a 2nd dose of chicken pox suppose to be given at 4 years of age.

I suggest that you still have her vaccinated against measles and varicella even though she was infected with it. Added immunity rin ito.
ACIP suggests giving separate MMR and varicella vaccines for the 1st dose since there were several cases of febrile seizures noted when the MMRV was given as the 1st dose. Pwede ibigay yung MMRV for the 2nd dose. Ask mo rin ang pedia mo since she might have a different opinion...

doc, napansin ko po wala pa pala 4th dose ng pcv13 baby ko.  di ba 12-15 months yun?  pano na po yun?  18 months na baby ko?  kung hindi ko pa po chineck yung immunization chart, hindi ko pa mapapansin.  tia.

Doc let question lang po, ang BCG vaccine is for protection against TB di po ba? Then nabasa ko sa PC thread yung ibang bata nadedetect nasa 2 and up years na.. Ibig ba sabihin magkaroon man ang bata nito kung may BCG siya kahit papaano mas malakas immune system niya?

BCG doesn't offer much protection against pulmonary TB, but it offers protection against spread of TB to other organs of the body (extrapulmonary TB). So with the BCG vaccine, even if the child gets pulmonary TB (lungs), there is protection against it spreading to the other organs such as the liver, bones and meninges.

Hi doc..okay lang ba if ibang brand na ng 5-in-1 ang gagamitin sa second dose? or dapat same brand sa first?

Yung sa rotavirus kaya dapat same brand all throughout?

Ask ko na rin sabi ng pedia ni baby pwede raw idelay yung PCV? Tapusin daw muna yung series ng 5in1 nya bago yung PCV? Eh natatakot ako sa pneumonia eh lalo na madalas ubuhin si baby
