^^Yes, for me, redundant, especially if they're funds that are invested in the same things (equities or bonds or fixed income, or etc.) I have both MFs and UITFs, only because at the beginning, I could only afford to invest 1k to 5k per month. I can afford the larger placements required for UITFs now, but things have also changed -- there are UITFs that have lowered their minimum investments to 1k to 5k.

I find my MFs cumbersome now, what with all the fees. As soon as I reach my target prices for those, I will pull them out.

It ranges from not ok to just average.

Sounds bad to me haha

Still too early though and anything can still happen, but I suppose it's hard not to smile at a 9.4% paper gain after just 2 months.  (Really close to AB Capital's 9.8% YTD.)

That's a good paper gain! ;)

question:  hindi po ba redundant if may UITF kana tas mag MF kapa?

I already have a mutual fund and I want to open (hopefully) an uitf for diversity. Might stick with BDO instead. That has to wait until I go home to the Philippines though. :(

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted what you said but like ikaela
said, UITFs are basically the same as MFs

I would never choose to invest in both for "diversity"
I treat them as the same.

And since UITFs usually have lower fees, all of my
investments are in UITFs.

I still have some investments in mutual funds though.
That was back when UITFs had higher minimums.
Pero I'm redeeming my MF investments as they reach
the 5 year mark.

hi! ive been a long time lurker sa mga investment threads. ive opened my BDO uitf last november. i understand na ndi ka iissuhan ng COP unless mag 10k yung value nya.

question is how do i know na nag 10k na yung value nya? hndi ko alam paano sya ienroll online, kasi wala naman ako naaalalang binigay na proof nung teller na nag open ako ng account. wala din acct number or kung anong tawag dun.

dapat ba ko pumunta sa bank to ask? kasi i may 4 months na ko naghuhulog at sa tantya ko e more than 10k na yung value nun bilang 4k monthly yung hulog ko.

also, ano ang dapat kong hingiin or itanong sa kanila so i can monitor this online sa bdo online acct ko? thank you po sa sasagot.  :)

On your contribution date, take note of the NAV then
divide your 4k investment by the NAV.

Just get the whole number and the first 4 of the
decimal part. So, let's say the quotient is 4.12345678

Your units would be 4.1234
There is no rounding up

Do that for every contribution date.

To find out if you're EIP will be spun off into a COP, on the contribution
date, sum up all of your units then multiply it by the day's NAV.
If its equal to or more than 10k then you get a COP.

thank you sir mxherr

pero may part pa din na ndi clear. i-PM ko sana kaso, di pa yata pwede yung acct ko kasi newbie palang. so sample sa baba:

nov 4000/ 381.5764 = 10.4828 units
dec 4000/ 358.897 = 11.1452
jan 4000/ 358.5894 = 11.1548
feb 4000/ 369.4355 = 10.8273

total units 43.6101
lets say i multiply to feb26 navpu
43.6101*385.0783 = 16793.3032

so this is greater that 10k. actually yung first three months pa lang more than 10k na sya.

question:
1.) automatic ba yung pagbigay ng bank ng COP? or do i have to ask for it?
2.) so yung sa sample above, for 3rd month dapat may COP na po ako. panibagong compute na po yung 4th month, 5th month... and so on hanggang maka reach ulit ng 10k value?
3.) paano ko po sya maieenroll online to monitor?

pasensya na po sa noob na tanong. mejo nalilito lang talaga ko sa pag issue ng COP. kasi sa mutual fund, every contribution ko, may COP binibigay kung ilang units nabili mo, so di gaano nakakalito. kasi dito sa bdo may 10k na value pa na aantayin. thank you so much.

^Depends on your level of trust.  ;D  Just kidding.

In that scenario, it won't really make a lot of difference because it's just a choice between 1 or 2 accounts.  But if you're thinking of a scenario wherein the couple wants to invest in a number of funds, then it might be more convenient to have them all designated as jointly owned.  And for ease of redemption, designate it in such a way that each of the couple authorizes the other to redeem on his/her behalf.

@smile

1.) Automatic ang pag issue ng COP.
And actually, pwede mong ipa mail sayo
ang COP kung gusto mo.

2.) Tama, 3rd month may COP ka na.
Tapos clean slate nanaman.

3.) Hihingi ang myBDO site ng CMN or
client master number. Unfortunately,
may issue sa CMN lately. I don't know

Looking at the YTD numbers, BDO's Balanced fund is doing almost as well as its Equity fund.  (1% difference lang).  On the other hand, BPI's Balanced Fund is not looking too bad this early, but BDO's is doing more than twice as well.  Hmmmm.... makapag-lipat nga. ;D

= = = = =

Looks like SB is slowly trying to compete with the big boys.  They'll be introducing a high-dividend equity fund on March 10, and they'll be slashing their holding periods to 30 days (formerly 90 days) for the aggressive funds.

@mxherr5 - you mention na you treat UITF and MF as the same .. i read during my research na MF gives out dividends? is this true? does that give more edge than UITF?

would you advise diversying via MF and UITF or just open your investments via UITF ( this money will be for Retirement Fund (long term) and House Renovation Fund (3 yrs target period) , House Mortgage Fund( 3 yrs target period) balak ko sana 2 investments would be in MF and then two would be in UITF.  Thanks in advance for your reply! :)

Then Question for those who have BDO Equity Funds - can you buy monthly without enrolling sa EIP? or it really needs to be under EIP? then the date for the EIP deductions can be set by you? TIA!  :)

yes, you can buy monthly without enrolling in EIP but you have to go to the branch. they still do not have online facility to buy additional shares unlike BPI na you can thru expressonline.

Uy!  I am interested sa SB UITF!  I want to do a placement in Dec. when I go home.  I hate the CS of BDO kaya kahit mas okay ang management ng UTFs sa kanila,  ayaw ko na maginvest.  Sinubukan ko sila for almost two years and hmmm, never again, transferred to BPI na.  Was initially thinking of trying UnionbankĀ“s UITF but SB seems interesting.  Will read more updates here from the masters hihi :D

@ayrise,

Sorry, I missed your earlier post.

- Yes its true that MFs can declare dividends.
Sunlife,ATR and Philam are among the ones who
have declared dividends in the past.

I had a Sunlife MF when they declared dividends
and no I personally do not think the dividends
is an advantage. I get more shares but the NAVPS
was adjusted DOWN. So, the end result is that my
investment was worth pretty much the same.

- EIP is like an auto debit policy with strict terms
as far as contribution dates are concerned.

You can only either invest once or twice a month.
Dates you can invest are on the 5th, 10th, 15th,
20th, 25th and 30th(not sure about the exact dates
but in my experience this is correct)
Or if you want the twice a month investment then its
5th and 20th, 10th and 25th, 15th and 30th

If you do not enroll in EIP, you can invest daily,
weekly, whenever you want.

@ mxherr55

no worries :)  .. really good that the thing about the dividends was cleared at least i won't expect it.
i'm based overseas kasi so i cannot personally go to BDO whenever i wish to add up to my UITF. i read that only BPI allows you to add online right? so for BDO i would have to visit their bank and i only go back to manila twice or thrice a year.. so i think EIP would be the best option for me..

Thanks again for the reply!
