^ sis, crossfit manila? we actually have a paleo group here?

I tried the Whole 30 challenge, I failed. haha! But it's okay. I will try again soon. Pero sarap nga ng feeling. Even if you're not 100% paleo, eating paleo most of the time has so many health benefits. nabawasan na yung diabetic medication ko (I'm type 2 DM) and I don't take my asthma maintenance na. I guess nabawasan na infammation ko sa katawan

^ paleo is not super restrictive naman. most paleo followers would say you can have dairy if you can tolerate it. regarding splenda, however, strictly speaking it's an artificial sweetener so it's not paleo. try more natural sweeteners like coconut sugar, coconut syrup, honey, or agave syrup. :)

I count carbs din kasi, kaya honey is a no no. Coconut sugar I've tried but okay lang, I need so much to sweeten. My diet is not really Paleo, I just tweaked low carb but it ended up being similar (although not exactly) Paleo. :)

I'm mainly doing this for health reasons. :)

^^ crossfit manila is actually a gym. it has branches in libis and fort. most people who do crossfit are also on paleo. whole30 is hard, haha! dito nalang ako sa "relaxed" paleo diet ko hehe.

^ that's great sis! i've read some blog posts about people who are on paleo but try to restrict their carbs... and that's what i like about this lifestyle. it encourages people to live and eat healthier. :)

^^ I saw na the website of CrossFit Manila. It's so expensive but it really looks like fun. Good thing my fiance and i will be moving to BGC when we get married. I'm sure it's something he will want to do because he does Paleo also (although not as strictly as me because he doesn't have time to cook)

^ Healthy carbs are part of the Paleo principle too. I never had as much success on any other diet than the one we do now. I have the LC lifestyle to thank for it. It was Dr. Atkins and Dr. Richard Bernstein (The Diabetes Solution) who got me started in the first place. I also do a hybrid because I have cheese from time to time... although, I wouldn't really call it a hybrid because some less strict paleo diets allow dairy if it is tolerated, nga as beachgirl said...

Girls, I have a question lang, do you use coconut milk? Do you make it fresh or do you use canned? If canned, what brand do you use?

^^ go sis! as long as you're healthy and fit and happy, that's all that matters. btw, others allow themselves to have brown or black rice pala. you might want to look into that when you're ready to reintroduce carbs in your diet.

^ paleo and exercise really do work well together! about coconut milk, i use yung naka tetrapak - either fiesta or kara brand. pero kung may taga-piga, i'd prefer fresh coconut milk. hehe.

^thanks I'll try those brands out. Yung nakuha ko kasi is the Suree thai coconut milk. MAs gusto ko made here. Fresh is best, pero you're right, super nakakatamad mag-piga. haha

Is your family on paleo too? Sa ngayon i live with parents, but will be getting married next year. I worry about how my parents eat kasi ma-carbs talaga. Sometimes, sinisingitan ko nalang ng protein and healthy fats when i have the chance para mabusog sila. They think I'm eating unhealthily pero ako yung nag-bawas ng medication. I don't think i will have a problem with fiance, though. He believes in our lifestyle so ok lang.

^^ i've been looking for local coconut milk brands pero wala akong mahanap. how sad nga na panay export tayo ng coconut products at yung mga nasa supermarket dito puro imported. :( my family thinks i'm crazy because i cut out rice, bread, dairy and sugar. ayaw ko naman i-hard sell ang paleo sa kanila; i want them to try it on their own.

^ me too! i'd rather have bread than rice. but when i have a cheat meal like paella, i make sure na masarap! oh, and desserts are my weakness too. that's why i bake my own treats. ;)

Kumusta naman mga sis cavewomen?

Ako yung nag comment sa page 1 na ayoko nito coz di pwede ang whole grains like rice or bread.  But guess what, Ive reconsidered, and as Ive said, i'll try a paleo-inspired diet.  Ive cut down on rice and bread but still eat having oatmeal for breakfast, but mostly MEAT  as in pang lalakeng meat with roast/steam/stirfry veggies during lunch/dinnertime.  If the ulam is talagang kelangan ng rice, i substituted with cauliflower "rice" and yun, nakampante na ako that this lifestyle is worth keeping! Even my hubby agrees.  ;D

Medyo cautiious lang ako with the coconut oil and lard aspect...parang i cant get myself to use lard or solid oils.  Ano ba gamit nyong cooking oil?

Hi sis sandalwood :) I use coconut oil to cook. It's the most economical and I feel like I'm helping our economy because the oil is a product of the Philippines. So far I've had no cholesterol problems.

In my opinion, the paleo way of eating is very healthy and a lot of people can benefit from it but it can also be customized. If you're uncomfortable, you can use any oil that you feel comfortable to cook with if it helps keep you on the way of living. Others are more strict and will disagree with my views, though.

Also, try picking up a book to help you navigate around the way of eating better. There's nothing like science to help you understand and stick to what you're doing :)

^tnx for the reply sis! So [textspeak!] brand of coconut oil do u use? Di ba pwde yung mga ordinary like minola?

Another question is, pag mataas na ang cholesterol ng isang tao, is it safe to eat mga pork crackling?

Yup sis, Minola or Baguio oil. I'm risking the ire of conventional wisdom by saying that it's what I use.

About the pork cracklings, my suggestion really is to pick up a book on the Paleo Diet to learn the science and the basics about it. It's hard to learn about it in a forum lang or through the internet. Best place to start is Robb Wolf's "The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet" He is a student of Dr. Loren Cordain, one of the original proponents of Paleo Diet research.

Sorry I didn't give a straight answer ha? :) Mahirap lang kasi magbigay ng advice na paisa-isa lang. Kailangan talaga it's in the whole context of the book :)

Yeah i understand sis! ;D i was researching on youtube and i kind of hv an idea about sat fats being bad only when combined with, among others, grains. But still confusing. Wait pa ako sa nireserve kong book sa library :) tnx!

I use Marca Leon when cooking.

Vegetable Oil sya, pero sa ingredients nakasulat "expeller pressed coconut oil."

I read on a paleo site somewhere (I can't remember which one, sorry) that sat fats are ok naman daw. Like nung unang panahon, puro meat-eaters yung mga tao pero lean sila. It's in the "feeds" that they give to our animals daw that makes them unhealthy. This is all but hearsay, pero it makes sense to me. My lola doesn't eat vegetables, puro baboy lang sa babuyan nya na for personal consumption.

Pero hindi 'feeds' ang pinakapakain nya.

She lived up to 93, she can still walk, cook, and do some farming/ gardening.  If she hadn't slipped and broke her hipbone, I think she'll still be alive. But then again, maybe it's genetic. Pero proof yun na hindi totoo ang generalization na dapat hindi kumain ng red meat.

good to hear that paleo is working for you sis :) i use virgin coconut oil and olive oil for cooking. as much as possible i avoid using vegetable oils na more commonly available sa supermarkets kasi kahit na made from coconut oil, highly processed na yun and konti lang yung nutrients na makukuha from that.

I just started a couple days ago. I started with my kitchen pantry first, i threw almost everything. I just bought coconut sugar, coconut oil and sea salt. Even my lovely patis, soysauce and ilocos suka were thrown away. This morning i had boiled eggs, tomatoes and blanched almonds. My freezer is full of grass-fed beef and wild caught salmon. I really wanna stick to this diet. Everytime we go out and eat I always omit certain ingredients that's not Paleo -friendly. Im not in to crossfit but I run for 2 miles a day.
