Mga sis please try to avoid buying puppies sa commercial pet stores. Buy from a reputable breeder where you can see the litter and parents to know what you're gonna get.

10 Reasons Not to Buy a Puppy From a Pet Store

1. Bad Health: Because so many pet store pups come from puppy mills, they are not the result of careful breeding and they are usually not well cared for before coming to the store.

2. Behavioral Problems: Because breeding is indiscriminate, behavioral problems are not weeded out generationally.

3. No Socialization: Pet stores pups are often pulled away from their litter at far too young an age, often at only four or five weeks.

4. The Downfall of the Standard: Purchasing a puppy from a pet store and then breeding her means you are ruining the standard of that breed because the previous breeders were not concerned with it.

5. Lack of Information: A member of a pet store staff is not an expert on a breed and often not on dogs in general.

6. Return at Your Puppy's Peril: Most pet stores do offer a warranty of sorts where you can bring the puppy back if he has problems. They don't tend to tell customers that the puppy's fate, once returned, is usually euthanization.

7. Housebreaking is a Chore: Pet store puppies have spent all their short lives in cages.

8. What You See Isn't Necessarily What You Get: There is no guarantee you will get a purebred dog if that's what you're after.

I got my poodle and my shih tzu in cartimar and wala naman akong na encounter na mga ganitong problems. Although I admit na you really have to be careful when buying in pet store. Of course after purchasing the dog, diretso mo na sya agad sa Vet to check the condition. Then para di ka maloko kung mix breed dapat aware ka din sa appearance ng specific breed. Then yung behavioral problems pwede mo pa naman ma correct yon through training especially if you can get them as early as 2 months. The rest, I agree with the TS. Mas advisable sa reputable breeder. I breed dogs because it's my passion. I get to know my buyer first, and I think it's the buyer's responsibility also to know the breeder well.

I tried getting from all sources ---from relatives and friends to sta cruz, to pet stores to breeders 
-The ones from relatives are usually askals, and they had lived for years.
-The one from sta cruz was a jap spitz and lived for around 13-14 years.
-The first dog from a pet store was a dalmatian and has lived only for around 7-8 years due to my neglect.
-The second dog from pet store is a one-ball english bulldog (which the seller didn't inform me) is now 3 years old.
-The latest are handsome shih tzus that we got from a nice family and they are now a year old.

Ano ang lesson na napulot ko? Do your research before getting any pet pero kung nandyan na sila, ito lang yan, saang lupalop man sila galing, nagkamali man tayo sa pinagkuhanan, mahalin at tanggapin natin sila, ibigay natin lahat ng makakaya natin, at itrain silang maging mababait na alaga dahil dito lang tayo makakabawi sa mga pagkakamali natin.

Aminin natin na mahirap ng maalis ang mga pets shops and irresponsible breeders, the best way na magagawa natin is to share infos and learnings to others, ipakita natin kung paano maging responsible pet owner. Mas malakas man ang hatak nila sa buyers, I know that thru responsible actions, mamumulat din ang mga tao.

I have never bought a dog ever. Lahat ng pets ko past and current are all bigay. Actually mga mutts sila. People ask me why "ganun lang" mga alaga ko. Mas bagay daw sakin yung pure breed.

Actually, a lot of people want to give me pure breeds, i just turn them down everytime. Nagkaka-samaan na nga ng loob kasi panay reject ko. Rationale ko kasi, madali for them to get adopted, since pure at ok na lahi, any family is willing to accept them. But yung mga askals and mutts medyo mahirap to find a home for them.

So ayun, panay mutts alaga ko. Pero di nila alam kasi they are spoiled rotten.
And if ever i want to get another dog, i would go to a shelter and get a rescue. Daming unwanted pets kasi that need homes.

Yung mga pets from puppy mill are of low quality. The mothers kasi are not given time to rest between pregnancies. Dinadaan nila sa quantity ng mabebentang pup. buntis sila ng buntis. I pity those dogs... So yung mga pups are sakitin, have in-born diseases that can manifest later on in their lives... buy from good and trusted breeders. Yung alam mong may dog lover talaga, not money lover.

^ couldn't agree more. nakakaawa talaga ang mga aso sa puppy mills. andami ko ng nakita na vids na tungkol dyan, my God, nakakaiyak na makita yung condition nila. they we're deprived simula pa lang sa mill, tapos pag dinala pa sa pet stores, mararanasan pa rin nila ang iba't ibang klaseng deprivation like kulang sa tamang pagkain, pati yung crate na pinaglalagyan sa kanila kadalasan sobrang liit (tulad na lang nung nabasa ko sa, i think, old website ng paws, na isinumbong ng isang concerned citizen about the harsh condition of a big dog sa bioresearch).

i bought my first dog, pero hindi sa pet store. i got her from my aunt na hindi na kayang sustentuhan yung needs ng dog (a lovely purebred female dachshund). regalo naman yun sa kanila ng amo nila na breeder ng mga doxies. so when i heard from my sister that my aunt is giving up their dachshund, kahit wala talaga kaming kapera-pera nung time na yun, talagang kinuha namin sya. i remember, ni-withdraw pa namin sa bank yung natitirang pera namin para mabili (but i like to use the term "ma-adopt") lang yung dog from my aunt. ayokong mapunta lang sya sa ibang tao na itatali lang sya sa harapan ng bahay...maulanan at maarawan na lang.

oh, i have another doxie pero anak sya ng unang dog namin. i will never buy a pup from a pet store. they're all for the money eh. sa totoo lang, nakita ko na kung gaano ka-unhygienic ng mga cages nila. and how they treat those animals, di maganda.

may friend kami ni hubby na may-ari ng isang pet store. before, palagi kaming nabisita dun. hay, nakakaawa ang hitsura ng mga aso. kahit cute sila, kung talagang dog lover ka, mararamdaman mo na sad sila. sobrang liit ng space tapos mainit pa dahil ceiling fan lang available. one time may golden ret silang nakadisplay. hindi na makatayo yung dog, lagi lang sya nakaupo or nakadapa. kahit nga maupo sya, his head was bowed down dahil sobrang sikip. ni umikot hindi nya magawa. hindi lang ako makapagreklamo. and imagine, kung matagal silang "on display", syempre hindi talaga sila maiaalis sa cage nila. it only means, hindi man lang malinis/madisinfect ng maayos yung kulungan. tapos every sunday, sarado yung store nila. eh yung friend ko na nakatira just in front of that pet store told us na talagang pag sunday, never nagbubukas ang store na yun. mukhang di man lang daw pinapakain. tapos before daw yun magsara ng saturday night, pinapatay ang ilaw. so simula saturday night hanggang monday morning wala silang ilaw. malamang nilalamok na yung mga aso dun. one time naman napadaan dun ang mom ko, sunday afternoon, nitong summer lang. eh di ba sobrang init nun. aba, umaalulong daw ang mga aso. wala na ngang food and water, wala pang proper ventilation. kawawang mga aso.

well, kanya-kanyang discretion lang yan. mas maganda nga kung mag-adopt na lang from shelters kasi marami na ring naghihintay dun ng bagong mag-aalaga sa kanila. mismong mga vet na ang nagsasabing sa mga reputable breeders lang kukuha ng pups. so there...

^ Sa animal planet and discovery channel may mga shows din about puppy mills. Babaha talaga ng luha pag nanunuod ako kaya ayoko na manuod... Yun actually ang nagpa realize sakin na wag bibili and adopt instead. Dati kasi gustong gusto ko ng jrt (jack russell terrier).

Meron din daw sa manila (dunno exaxctly where) basta yung puppies na for sale na nasa box lang at nasa bangketa yung sellers.  Ang cute at taba daw ng mga pups pero pag carry mo ang gaan-gaan. Dunno how they do that. Pero parang ampao daw na hangin lang.

The thing with pet stores, most of them dont care where the puppies come from. Basta kikita sila, they will sell. Sana they get the puppies from responsible breeders.

Yung doctor ko also breeds and sells dogs. Alam ko he loves dogs talaga. Mas enjoy sya sa kennel kesa sa hospital sabi ng secretary nya. Hehe

I'm a breeder buut I don't make money out of it. Lugi pa ako sa nagagastos ko pero since dog lover ako okay lang sa akin. Nakakaawa talaga ang mga puppy sa mill lalo na yung binebenta nila na wala pang vaccine, then wala pang 2 months nire release na nila. My gosh pag may nakikita akong ganon di ko talaga mapigilan mag comment sa mga ads nila na hindi dapat ganon. Di na nila inisip ang kapakanan ng aso ang importante lang sa knila puro pera. Hinding hindi ako bibili sa mga ganong seller.

depende sa pet store, hindi naman sila kukuha ng puppies kung alam nilang palpak yung breeder at di rin sila magpapalugi para pabayaan magkasakit mga puppies nila on display, siguro kelangan lang nilang turuan yung mga tao nila sa shop on how to proper care ng mga pups. pero mas maganda ngang mag adopt yun lang madami ding kelangan i-consider baka kasi ibalik sa pinagkuhanan pag di nagustuhan yung pups lalo na pag cats.

hanni1216, you're running a charity not a business. 

Its ok to make money if its business. Thats the whole premise of going into business - to make profit. It is legal and moral.


Yung nga lang there are some who forget to treat the animals humanely because they are purely after profit and forget about their responsibility towards the animals.

ako, he got my dog from a good friend. they have lots of shih tzus kasi.  there was one time na yung regular pet ssupply store na binibilhan ko ng food nya, nakaclose so we had to look for another store that carried the brand.  dun, madami silang on display na dogs pero it breaks my heart when i look at them.  sure, cute sila pero kitang kita naman na they're neglected.  sobrang liliit ng cages, and sometimes, makikita mo na meron na poop sa cages, di pa din tinatanggal.
Tapos, yung cages nakastack pa on top of each other.  I found out din na pag close sila  at night and on sundays, walang naiiwan sa store, so pano kaya naman pinapakain yung mga dogs dun.
What makes it worse is that yung mayari ng shop, vet daw.  di ba dapat sila mauna makaalam on what's good or not for animals?

This is my question, since we are aware of the horrors of puppy milling, what do you do when you see a possible customer when you visit pet shops? Do you butt in and explain to them the real story behind pet shop dogs? Do you argue with pet shop owners?

^ these pet shop owners we're all well aware about the pros and cons of getting pups from puppy mills. nakwento ko nga na pet shop owner ang friend namin ni hubby but we don't meddle with his business. business nya yun, alam nya ang tama at mali, konsensya na lang ang pairalin nya. what we do is, kapag nakaalam kami ng mga kakilala namin na gusto magkaroon ng pets at gustong bumili sa mga pet shops, especially dogs, we tell them na mas magandang kumuha sa mga breeders na kakilala namin, yung alam namin na concern talaga sa welfare ng mga dogs. for now, yun lang ang magagawa namin para kumonti ang benta ng mga pet shops na yan

It's still best to get a dog from a reputable breeder na ginagawa lang ito dahil passion niya at mahal niya ang mga dogs. Sobrang naaawa ako sa dogs na nasa stores. Nakakulong sa kapirasong kulungan. Naiiwan overnight by themselves. Walang social life and so on. I wonder how they will be like kapag nakalabas sa kulungan after a long time.

Let's adopt instead of buy. Ang dami daming homeless animals sa mga shelters that are put down because nobody adopts them.

Animal mills continue because there's demand. Pag wala ng bumibili sa kanila, no reason nadin para maabuse ang mga animals sa deplorable mill conditions.

Mula pagkabata lumaki na ako may dogs sa family. At first, my impression to them was they just exists to guard the house. No emotional attachment to them. But everything has changed when a stray dog came into my life. He became my bestfriend for 12 years. He was very loyal to me up to his last breath. He can get mad to anyone but not to me. At that time, I don't have much knowledge about dogs. All I know is that I love him and he loved me too. When he's sick, I personally take care of him and give him medicines. Until it's time for him for him to leave for the rainbow bridge. I was so down at that time. It was one of the very down moments in my life. It just feel like I lost a friend and a brother.

Now, to answer why I would not buy from a Pet Store? It's because there are so many stray animals like my bestfriend who needs a loving home & family. He made me realized that adopting a stray is all worth it than buying in pet shop. That one opportunity I gave him to have a human family means so much to him and in return he gave to us his loyalty and unconditional love.

Adopting animals from shelter does not only help them have a home but we also help those animals lessen their suffering from irresponsible breeder. Why? Because if we stop buying from them, we are also making a big step in ending their business. If no one will buy from them then there's no reason for them to continue that kind of business. It may be impossible now but who knows?
